DM Berwick's Serpent's Skull Adventure

Game Master Lost Gamer

Continuing a great game with some great players.

Hello there!

We are going to be getting into the Serpent's Skull Adventure Path, and we need another player. You can read more about the group here.

The expectation is that the player chosen will post at least once per weekday, with weekends being optional, along with communication if regular posting can not be done for whatever reason. We all have lives here, it would just be nice to know if you are not going to be available.

Character Creation Rules:
  • 2nd level PCs
  • No evil alignments
  • 20 point buy for ability scores
  • average starting gold by class
  • Core classes only, no APG classes
  • No traditionally evil races (goblins, orcs, drow, etc.)
  • Faction's are in play, so please make sure that you are a member of the Pathfinder Society.
  • APG rules may be used, feats, race and class tweaks, equipment, etc. Just not the new classes.
  • All the stuff from the Armory is also allowed.

Please post character concepts, and we will be voting on them starting Aug 13.

Good luck, and I certainly hope to see you soon!

Berwick

Hello there! If I may ask a couple of questions (alright, three if you count this one)?

Is there a particular class or classes you are looking for or are all core classes fair game? Far as I can tell, the one you are seeking a replacement for is a cleric, so are you looking for another cleric?

Also, when you say I have to be a member of the Pathfinder Society, do you mean me, i.e. the player, which would mean having to become a member of the Paizo Pathfinder Society, or are you talking about the character being a member or associate of the Pathfinders?

Speaking as a current player in the group, you (the player) don't have to be a member of the Pathfinder Society to be in the game. Your character, however, does need to be a Pathfinder - the rest of us decided to "join up" and we think it will be fun to have some goals other than the mission we are on. Plus, it will be fun for DM Berwick! :)

As for a particular class...a cleric or druid would be handy considering we are heading into the jungle on a daring, death-defying quest.

I'll have to take some time to come up with a background (and a reason he would be on a boat) but I thinking about a Lion Shaman Druid.

An oracle or paladin might be a good fit too.

EDIT: A witch could work as well.

It might be nice, to list who's in the group and a short description of each.

Bandlewick "Bandy" Sealegs Weathervane

Bandlewick, or Bandy to his close friends, has always had an affinity for the natural world. Even since he was a child, he'd been able to predict, with uncanny accuracy, how the weather was going to turn. Indeed, he became so famous in his small village that the local farmers would often consult the small child prior to turning out their livestock in case there was going to be a torrential downpour that day.

As he progressed in years, so did his closeness to nature grow stronger. Many thought he might tread the path of a ranger, and Erastil herself knew that the local area could do with a reliable watchman, but it didn't really come as a surprise when a Druid, an middle-aged Human, appeared at the village one day in order to take Bandy under his wing. Together, they wandered the wild forests around his villages, often spending months away from his family at a time.

And so, for several years, Bandy learned the way of the Druid until eventually, his mentor decided to settle down with a local elven woman who was herself a devout follower of Erastil. Together, despite his mentor's advancing age, they had several children and Bandy was happy that his mentor had found even greater happiness in the twilight years of his life.

Yet, despite all that he had learnt from his mentor, Bandy hungered for more. He'd heard tale of the Pathfinder Society, an enormous organisation who coveted knowledge of all kinds. If anyone would be able to expand his natural knowledge then surely it would be them! He said fond farewells and departed for Absalom.

It was as he took the voyage from Oppara to Absalom that Bandy developed a deep love of the sea. Whilst other passengers would console themselves below decks as the boat rolled in the waves, Bandy would spend as much time as he could out on the deck, laughing gleefully.

Eventually, almost three months to the day since he had set out from his home, Bandy found himself standing at the enormous gates of the Grand Lodge. He presented himself to be tested and spent an anxious couple of days in Southgrove until he was summoned and informed that he had passed the tests and would be welcomed into the Society as an initiate.

Three years passed quickly, and despite all of its hardships and learning, Bandy emerged on the other side victorious. He completed his Confirmation and was inducted as a full-fledged Pathfinder.

On his first mission, Bandy was instructed to head for the Mwangi Expanse and wait there for a boat named Jenivere. He was to board the boat and await further instruction.

-----

A bit of an abrupt ending, perhaps, but it was the best way that I could think of to tie the Society to Bandy's actual being on the boat. Given Bandy's progression (he's a Weather domain Druid) I did toy with the idea that he'd perhaps act as a navigator, perhaps for a more senior (NPC) Pathfinder on the boat?

Anyway, the crunchy bits that'll become Bandlewick Sealegs Weathervane!

Nature's Bond: Weather domain
Traits: Boarded in Mwangi Expanse, Devotee of the Green (Kn (nature))

Anything more you'd like to know/be expanded on?

I would have likely went for building a witch or an oracle but Berwick said the mods to the core classes were fine, but the base classes were not legal for play.

Whoops! I missed that. Sorry for attempting to lead you astray.

Of course I could try and guilt him into it...he is playing an alchemist in my game ;)

I just like to hear back story and i think it helps others when creating a character to drop into a group.

This is the background I created for Scipion del Ferro's recruitment thread, unfortunately Maxime didn't make it into the final group. Being a member of the Pathfinders would not fit Maxime at the outset of the game; but rather I imagine that she could be convinced to join (or act as a guide) thereafter. Her character background makes her familiar with the jungle and ancient ruins.

The character is updated to level 2; if there are problems don't hesitate to let me know :)

Background:
Maxime is the unsolicited result of an encounter between a Chelish colonialist and a Mwangi girl. Though obviously of mixed blood, the child did find a home among the tribe and grew to the onset of puberty with little more than a hint of her mixed heritage.

With her first blooding her body awakened to more than it was accustomed to. A feral, bestial nature revealed itself that neither the girl nor the tribe and its shaman could cope with. The girl was not killed outright, as such would release the aktu, the evil inside her; instead she was cast from the tribe - banished - and with her the evil spirit that had taken possession of her.

The girl survived the jungle. Spending the next ten years fending for herself - with little human contact. Over the course of years she became a primal spirit to the Mwangi tribes in the delta she frequented: rarely seen, unnaturally beautiful, and often in or near sites of ruins - where spirits lived. She became known as Sikutku - She Who Hunts At Dawn - as she was almost never sighted at other times of the day.

After more than a decade of the girl's drifting in the jungle, the lore of her reached even Kalabuto. It became a bit of a colonialist sport to hunt for this "legendary jungle spirit" - and it took just short of six years for the girl - now a woman - to be caught by one Lord Maximus Rachmanov. Named after her captor, Maxime was displayed and brandished in her "natural feral beauty as when the beast was caught", that is to say naked, she was exhibited throughout Sargava and parts of Cheliax.

On the return voyage to Sargava Maxime finally caught a lull in her guard, ripping one guard's throat open with her bare hands and killing the other with his own dagger. At the time nobody dared approach her, then as more days passed Maxime became a quiet fixture of the ship. People saw her change from a beast to merely a human, barring her teeth only when startled or when approached uninvited.

Wow! I am surprised by the quick response.

Thank you so much for your interest!

We are somewhat lite on healing and divine magics, but I would rather see people play what they want to, than to play something they are not excited about because it is "needed". Characters are going to die regardless of divine and/or healing magics present. <*wink*>

  • Origen: A mysterious man with a mysterious past! He brings the arcane pain, and has a real dedicated interest in apes! Human Sorcerer
  • Jonagher: The wit and dashing charm of the group, he enjoys a good mystery! Half-Elf Rogue
  • Torden: This quiet dwarf likes a good tale and a good ale! Writing down epic stories whilst laying down that funky jungle beat! Dwarf Bard
  • Frik: Good with a blade and a stein, Frik has been the clerical mojo-man for the group. He is still lurking out there, and I hope to see him again...soon. Human Cleric of Cayden Cailean

I can do a more serious breakdown of the players in the group, give me some time, and I will post that later tonight.

EDIT:
Talomyr, you have raised a good point. I am putting it to a vote from the group if they will allow the newcomers to pick from the APG base classes. You don't have to bribe/guilt me...it's all up to them!

Also, please note that I am seriously looking for one or two people now, and WHEN Sully gets back, there will be seamless integration for Frik back into the group, if he chooses. It might cause the group to be a little big, but from everything I have seen...you may need it.

Liberty's Edge

Just wanted to pop in and express interest. I don't have a character ready at the moment, but I definitely will put a Cleric together for the group's review in the next day or so. I was in Sully's CotCT game, and his computer mishaps have left me bereft of a game. My job, which was a boring one when I started Sully's game, has become even more boring, so I'll have plenty of opportunity to post.

No worries about playing a Cleric, they're far and away my favorite class to play. I'll check back once I've got something for you.

Regards,
J

Upon further review, here is what I am comfortable with sharing about character backgrounds.

Bran - A serious man who seeks to make a better legacy for his family name within the Pathfinders. From Andoran.

Origen - A sorcerer with a hidden past and a desire to find out what happened to him and his family. From Absalom.

Jonagher - A rogue searching for answers to a riddle that his family has paid blood to protect. From Kyonin.

Torden - A wandering merchant who wants to uncover great mysteries and discover great stories. From the Inner Sea region.

Frik - A rowdy priest who is searching for his brother. From Absalom.

If you want to know more than that, you would have to ask the individual players. I am a firm believer in player vs. character knowledge, and I don't want to reveal any secrets that aren't mine to give.

Also, Barrdyn Klymeth, what does the Boarded in Mwangi Expanse trait do? And how is it described? [i.e. fluff, not crunch please] I am going to assume it is in the APG, which I do not have.

Well, Uchendu was originally built as an Inquisitor, but he could quite easily be ported-over into being a (militant) Cleric without any changes to his back-story, if the new APG base classes are an issue :-)

Let me know what you all think ;-)

As for his association with the Pathfinder Society:

Contact with Pathfinder Society:

The follower of the Ravener King would have come into contact with the society by way of Chelish slavers, with whom his tribe had close contact.

In contrast, the follower of Shimye-Magalla (the Mwangi Gozreh/Desna hybrid) would have had exposure to the society by way of acting as a guide for exploration parties to various holy sites, and would probably have an affinity for Osiriani Pathfinders.

Silver Crusade

Origen is the sole survivor of a prior Pathfinder expedition. His father and sister, both fellow Pathfinders, are among the missing. Origen's role in the expedition's failure is unclear, but he claims to have no memory of what happened.

Berwick wrote:

No, it's a campaign trait in the Serpent's Skull players' guide. I think that a PDF should be available as a free download; I got a copy that way.

As Eric said, it's a campaign trait which grants the following:

+1 to Knowledge (nature) checks made regarding the Mwangi Expanse, and Polyglot is a free language learnt.

Edit: As we are meant to be Pathfinders; do we treat second level HP in the same way we would if playing Society?

Dice Rolls:
Random starting age
9d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 3, 3, 2, 6, 2, 6, 5) = 37

Random starting height
2d4 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4

Actually, we decided to use the 1/2 HD + Con bonus for level advancement. Works pretty well and it's easy to figure.

Edit: BTW, I like the character backgrounds submitted thus far. Very nice, folks!

Yuuwa Majid would like to be considered for this tour of duty. She already plys the trade routes. She has thought of joining the PFS but rather enjoys the contracted crew, hired for specific deliveries and then out.

Hey Maxime, we are wanderers amongst the threads. Good Luck!

Of course the Player's Guide would come out when I wasn't looking...naturally!

Got it, and I saw it there yes. Thanks for the heads up folks!

Ojibwe is a Mwangi druid that needs to be raised to 2nd level and tweaked with the new APG options.

Since I have a certain aversion to playing clerics, druids and paladins for some unfathomable reason, I am putting an elven fighter up for consideration.

Here is a preliminary draft for him. Although not in the draft, he is to have the Academy Training variant ability from the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting book (if allowed) and he is to go down the Two-Weapon Warrior path from the APG.

Background information:

Spoiler:
As far as the background and his connection to the Pathfinder Society is concerned, I was thinking the gist of it being that both of his parents were members of the Society and, when one of them went missing during an expedition, the other one went looking. Unfortunately, both were discovered dead some time later by the Society, leaving their son an orphan. The Pathfinder Society took it upon themselves to raise the boy and after some time to train him as well, with Isandril showing a talent for fighting with two weapons. Thanks to having received a more formal training than your average warrior, the elven warrior is a bit more varied where his skills are concerned. Although not necessarily an official member of the Society, Isandril is of course grateful to them for taking care of him and is always willing to give them a hand when needed. An adventurer at heart, he is fairly easy-going and friendly, with a desire to see how much he can hone his skill at swordplay.

If I may, Maxine and Yuuwa, you may want to post on the Gamer Connect board as players looking for a Serpent Skull DM. Perhaps look at the SdF recruitment thread and get together with some of the other seekers to form a cohesive group. We did that for Kingmaker and someone stepped up and took us on. Just a thought for you.

Thanks for the suggestion markofbane - Yuuwa was actually commenting on me and her wandering on from SdF's recruitment thread.

Berwick,

Looks like you have quite a few folks with good character concepts that can fit nicely into your existing group. I will go ahead and bow out in favor of someone who isn't involved with as many games as I am already.

Thanks,

Talomyr

That is very kind of you Talomyr. Thank you.

Also, by popular vote, I will allow APG base classes as well.

We took a vote and had 3 out of 5 vote in favor of it so far, which is enough for me to allow it.

So feel free to change classes if that is what you are interested in doing.

Okay, so far, here are the applicants. I first want to say thank you so much all of you for applying here. I am excited by all the possibilities, and it will be a hard time voting for sure!

  • Barrdyn Klymeth with Bandlewick "Bandy" Sealegs Weathervane a male NG Gnome Druid of the Green Faith, Weather focused, and sent on a mission from Absalom, having boarded the boat in the Mwangi Expanse.

  • Maxime with Maxime a female human (Chelish-Mwangi) barbarian whose has been an exhibit for a Chelish noble, and initially boarded the Jenivere in the Mwangi Expanse.

  • Jeremiziah with an initial concept for a cleric.

  • Uchendu Kybwa'ka with Uchendu Kybwa'ka a male CN half-elf Inquisitor of Angazhan, the Ravener King, and boarded the Jenivere in the Mwangi Expanse.

  • Deevor with an initial concept for a human druid.

  • Yuuwa Majid with Yuuwa Majid a Quadirian female NG Cleric of Gozreh seeking to make a name for herself and family, a crew-member aboard the Jenivere

  • Rimrock with Ojibwe a N male human (Zenj) Druid out on a quest to find his spirit of the beast, boarded the Jenivere in the Mwangi Expanse.

  • F. Castor with Isandril Velahrna CG male elf fighter, crew-member aboard the Jenivere

Please note that you have until midnight (0000) Thursday, August 12 to submit any changes or new applicants. We will use board time to make it easy.

  • Liberty's Edge

I'll bow out as well, you've got a bevy of interested folks who already put a fair amount of time into their characters. No need for me to cloud the waters. Hopefully, someone's going to start a game with the new AP soon, and I'll be able to get in there.

    Have fun, Berwick and Co.!

I think Maxime will stand as she is - unless there are specific requests to change some aspect of her :) - thanks

Since I renamed him from simply Isandril to his full name of Isandril Velahrn, I thought to provide the new link.

    Here he is.

The basics of his background are in an earlier post in this thread. As for changes, as I mentioned before, if he is chosen, he is to have the following variant features (provided the DM approves of course):

Formally Trained variant ability from the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting (gains Diplomacy, Knowledge (Geography), Knowledge (Nobility), Sense Motive as class skills in addition to the normal fighter class skills, has 4 + Int skill points instead of 2 + Int; this ability replaces the 1st level fighter bonus feat).

Two-Weapon Warrior alternate class features from the Advanced Player's Guide.

Good luck to us all! :-)

I would like to add my vote (not that it means much) for "Team Nature". I can imagine the one party that avoids civilized settlements because they like nature better.

"Town? No thank you. We have all we need here."

Background for Elven Druid Chi T'Reignial.

Although the background states a witch, she can just as easily be a druid for your game. I will put together a basic druid as I don't have the APG yet, but by next Tuesday hope that situation will be rectified.

I'd also like to submit an application for consideration.

    Professor Horatio Reginald Kennington III
    35 year old Human
    Witch*
With his pet iguana (assuming no druid) Darwin

The third son of a minor noble line, Hoaratio is none other than the famed lecturer, scientist and author of the same name. Perhaps best known for his definative 6 volume guide "Killer Plants of the Known World" as well as his popular series of adventure stories for children, Horatio has for many years been an enthusiastic supporter and (non-active although he makes sure he attends each banquet) member of the pathfinder society.

Having recently resigned his university post (rumours of a dalliance with a young noble student being base slander!), Horatio has sought support from several benefactors for his place on the Jenivere expedition in respect of which he proposes to publish upon its successful conclusion a complete record of his scientific discoveries for the betterment of the human race.

    * Horatio keeps his powers secret although it won't take long for the secret to slip out. At this point he will deny their mystical origin.

    Popular Catchphrases:
    - "Witchcraft! No boy believe me theres a perfectly rational scientific explanation for everything!"
    - What do you mean you've never heard of me!? Here have a free copy of my pamphlet.
    - Just because we are in the middle of a swamp surrounded by lizardmen doesn't mean we should let our standards slip. Besides its teatime!

In the interests of full disclosure for considering my application:
    - I am GMT (0).
    - I am away from the 14th-22nd August although should still have some access during that time.
    - I am a lawyer and its been a long time since I've played any rpg. A friend got me interested in pathfinder and from that I found my way to these boards.

Just saw the bit where you said you'd allow APG classes, so I'll stick with the witch. Only problem I won't get the APG until Tuesday, if it's a problem I'll have to withdraw Chi.

    Weird editing rules.

To supplement my application I forgot to state the obvious that Horatio is from Taldor. Boarded in Cheliax (not the trait which is Mwangi Scholar).

I picture him having a whole pile of stuff, equipment, maybe employees which all goes bye bye at the start.

My witch has been chosen to play another game, so regretfully I will bow out of this. I know you have several great witches to choose from and wish you all the best luck in the game. Thanks for the consideration.

Just for the sake of clarification, I would like to respectfully point out that I submitted two interwoven backgrounds - one for a CN Inquisitor of the Ravener King, and the other for a LN Inquisitor of Shimye-Magalla (the Mwangi Desna/Gozreh hybrid); mechanically, they are the same :-)

Deevor, thank you for your honesty and consideration! I appreciate you taking the time to let us know.

Also, Uchenda, I had never even thought of the Inquisitor of the Ravener King concept, and that is EXCELLENT. I will reiterate the dual background possibility to the voters, thank you.

Yuuwa, and Isnadril, please make any final tweaks, fixes, or changes to your characters, and we shall begin hopefully by Tuesday or Wednesday, though we might do something lite before then.

Also, Here is the OOC discussion thread, please start using this one rather than the other OOC thread.

    Sincerely,

    Berwick

Thanks for the consideration :) - Maxime will find a place in the future somewhere ;)
