DM Barcas - Kingmaker: Rivers Run Red

Game Master Isaac Duplechain

As Newhaven rises, threats besiege it from all directions. To the north, the news of the last heir of House Rogarvia threatens the start of a new war. To the south, an empire of trolls and monsters grows.

If you're curious about the timeline, I wrote out when each book would take place (roughly). I think I've decided to combine book 4 and 5 from the original AP into a single arc, as they cover most of the same thematic ground. This is, of course, a rough outline. I put it into a spoiler box if you don't want to know the titles or their timeline.

Spoiler:

- 4709 to 4711: Book II, Rivers Run Red
- 4712 to 4714: Book III, The Varnhold Vanishing
- 4718 to 4720: Book IV, Blood for Blood & War of the River Kings
- 4725: Book V, Sound of a Thousand Screams
- 4727-4733: Book VI, Return of the Conquerer

Jhod would be more than pleased to step down and let someone else take the role, though he'd probably want to move into an advisory position to Verik (to give some balance, he'd say, to the faith of the nation).

Wow...I didn't figure that the timeline would be that extensive in terms of years. No issue with it of course, but just didn't think it would run that long.

It's only twenty years from Book I to Book VI. I think that's not a terribly long time to justifiably go from low level to high level, while bringing up a strong kingdom from nothing.

It really depends from what position and with what support a kingdom is built.

Consider post-World-War-2 West Germany: most urban centers were devastated and agriculture was about a third of the pre-war output. After the war from 1945 to 1950 a concerted effort was made to convert Germany into an agricultural nation - including the dismantling or destruction of its remaining industries. After this economic repression was lifted in 1950, it took only around 5 years for the economy - and the country as a whole - to recover.

Though admittedly, it is referred to as the "Wirtschaftswunder" (economic miracle), so applicability to fantasy kingdoms may be uncertain.

I want Verik to respond (even if it just an internal monologue) to her giving away the item that he crafted for her. Once we see that, it'll be a sufficient gift to gain an audience.

Hmmm okay I need to think about this one overnight, as I think I know how he'd react but not clean on how to write it. It's a strong gesture by Jemini though - and NICE roll for Diplomacy too!

Metaphoric Jemini is shocked. Shocked and hurt. That Verik didn't even consider the possibility of the cloak being an investment. :p

Heh, well he'll just have to come around to that one in a bit, once he can view the centaurs as being valuable. Or Jemini can explain it to him. She pretty much has been able to spin any thread into gold by explanation so far (yaaaaay Charisma!).

If Jemini only knew Verik's instinctive loin-guided view of the centaur maiden...

I was quite expecting that - everything is building to that. If Jemini (darkest timeline) gets wind of all that, then she may have a spanner to throw into the argument.

Ah, I remember Copenhagen and Everett (many-worlds) interpretations quite well from when I was growing up. I think they are the only real contenders (and of the two, I think Everett's take is superior and intellectually more pleasing - Copenhagen has received more appraisal by merit of having been the first interpretation).

De-Broglie Bohm was new to me, so I read up on it on the wiki, and I think the notion that it is a special case of the Everett interpretation is valid (it essentially takes Everett's approach, then adds a superfluous element.I guess that marks me as a fanboy).

The Consciousness interpretation is, I think, not an appropriate model. I think its underlying flaw is that it looks at a subset of conditions (namely the presence of consciousness during measurements) and assumes that this satisfies and can be applied to the universal system. There's no evidence that suggests that a measurement that is not observed doesn't make a measurement.

Essentially it is saying that - in the double slit experiment - that if a device to measure which slit a particle takes is placed within the experiment, then the wave collapse as observed happens; BUT, if the same measuring device was to come about by chance, then the wave function would not collapse. I think in principle this is refuted by successful demonstrations of quantum eraser (with reference to double-slit) experiments - though I admit that one could argue about the level of consciousness in a chance-based detection experiment.

...I don't even know where Verik would go and what he would do in half-equine form. Perhaps convince Korag Kaag that taxes are best, because you get to have a day in the year where you can celebrate having to pay taxes. Isn't Taxfest just the weirdest?

I'll leave a bit of breathing room for others to post (if they want); I had Jemini suggest a banquet to buy time both for characters and players.

@Taisper: I may be missing things, but I couldn't find Taisper's style feat (from Master of Many Styles) anywhere on his character sheet. I find it hard to imagine what style would work well in the build; my initial reaction was thinking that the character would benefit more from the Sensei archetype (mostly from the level 2 ability to use Wisdom as attack stat) than the MoMS.

PS - it's nice to see Taisper post again.

Say hello to the newest member of this adventure. Borodin, feel free to introduce yourself.

Isaac, I have neglected to mention my familiar upto this point during the Darkest Timeline. How would you feel if he had survived the death of this timelines Elsir? Perhaps we could work him in some way?

Edit: Taisper, do you want to launch into an introduction between Borodin and Elsir?

A "normal" parrot?

Quite substantial

*nod* it was actually one of the primary reasons I picked a parrot for my character. I figured Elsir as an elf would be more predisposed to a long lived companion. Squawk was actually modeled after an African Grey.

Hmm. It has been 20 years since Future Elsir died. Would any of the PCs volunteer to care for an orphaned, former familiar parrot? Jemini is the one most likely to do so, and Nikolai might let her keep it as company... Yalls thoughts?

I (and by extension Jemini) love African Greys :) - she could certainly have looked after it. As a bonus, African Greys are considered by some to be the smartest of birds (large vocabulary and the ability to do simple arithmetic); so even without the familiar bond the bird would still be quite clever.

I'm still leveling, so there's actually a bunch of things missing. And I'm selecting stuff based on story, not build optimization. With where Taisper is gonna be heading, here, monk actually makes sense. Bear with me.

It's funny you mention that, because my aunt has had an African Grey that I've known since I was a boy and that bird is still going strong - with quite the mocking vocabulary too!

Oh yeah and Holy Multi-Post Ilyana-Taisper Dialogue Batman! That was a nice view into Taisper's current life, which is really neat to see to highlight his current transition. You know I'm always rooting for the "Taisper finds a modicum of happiness as well as fulfillment of purpose" outcome as opposed to the "blind Cog Darkest Timeline" option ... even though both Taispers are cool to read of course.

I think that having the two Taisper perspectives posted really gives a nice level of contrasting between the two. When I think back to his trap he sent to the mayor's office as well as the creepy stone eyes he kept finding I could see how he could have gone in Cog's direction.

As for Squawk, He was actually modeled after a African Grey that my buddys friend had. Being a sailor, the bird knew quite a few curse words.

Thanks, guys! Glad you're digging the Taisper megadose. :-p Where I'm --perhaps obviously -- going with this is to get "happy T" well-established, then Borodin shows up in the current timeline with a message and a capital-M Mission from his (Taisper's) future self that puts the whole happiness path back in jeopardy. We'll see how it goes.

I still have no idea how we are going to get back. I hope future Taisper has an idea about it. I'm just enjoying this rollercoaster right now.

What, don't you trust me? ;-)

I am up against Superstar deadline, gang, but I am trying to pay careful attention. I intend to get back in front of the centaur and even post a darkest timeline.

Yeah. epic Nikolai with his brood on. Y'all done screwed up now.

You'll have your opportunity (relatively soon) for Darkest Nikolai.

You have a deadline to meet!

But if you'd like to have a scene out of context with the Dragon Lord, I'm not going to tell you no.

Oh, oh it does (irritate the bejeezus); I mean Taisper - the character - is so broken and wrong on so many levels it makes my hairs stand-up. But he is well written and adds great depth to the story and he is "my/our" broken character. I'm holding thumbs that he'll not necessarily be vindicated, but at least somehow (a) find personal peace and (b) stick it to the baddies.

Hey Guys, work has been kicking my butt. Sorry Taisper I was thinking about the sword and how I wanted to respond, but considering your characters attitude towards waiting the response made perfect sense. I'll get a post up tonight.

Poor Future Taisper. That juxtaposition was fantastic.

Thanks! Glad you dig. It was fun to do. Somewhat relatedly, I just learned that the icon I've been using for TS is meant to be a woman. Had no idea.

Yes.

Though I am tempted to suggest: Poor Current Taisper - it is all downhill from here; there is a world of tragedy waiting for him. Whereas The Cog is striding towards his salvation, saved by the chance arrival of time travelers.

Ah so. Fair enough! I hope similar things. To your point above, it's going to be very interesting to see what Borodin decides to do with that note The Cog gave him.

It looks like an old school anime character to me.

What's really funny is that every time I look at Verik's icon all I can think of is "Run Away!!!!" Either that or someone put a red hot poker up his butt.

See and I just thought it was just Verik giving everyone the what-for because he knows better (which he does of course in case anyone's keeping score).

He's kinda like the American that Death scolds in Monty Python's Meaning of Life. "You Americans, all you do is talk, and talk, and say "let me tell you something" and "I just wanna say." Well, you're dead now, so shut up!"

Hello All.

My head is breaking water on my self-imposed exile. Sorry for any disruption that has caused. I am back in my house, and the sanding floors and painting has died down in intensity. The move back in sapped my nighttime energy so no home improvement tasks this week, thus it is giving me a chance to catch up.

I have managed to poke along in a few of my on-line games, but I was unable to commit to the high level of play this game of Kingmaker demanded. You guys are just too good and involved for my part-time schedule. Too many days of seeing 20+ posts to catch-up on, and not enough time for meaningful posts. It started an unfortunate shame cycle It was already showing in Taisper's Mist game that he restarted recently, as I was already falling behind, especially in posts involving conversation. But I am back now with a stable work load at work and more importantly a stable home environment.

So if I can be forgiven, and Zander still has a purpose, I would like to take up the reins again and un-bot Zander.

I will need to do some catch up reading and figure up who some of the new faces are, but good to see everyone.

Dave

I am glad to have you back! Zander has quite a story left to tell. He's currently hanging around Sanctuary, though the Wardens are spread out throughout the southern reaches keeping an eye on the possibility of an incursion of monstrous humanoids from that direction.
