"If you cannot figure it out in more than a few shots, we can try to find you another weapon, say a sap or a pillow. "
"Thank you, Carina. I'm sure that I will be able to figure it out just fine! I'll let you know if I have any further questions."
I wonder if I have offended Carina in any way, she seems a little more impatient with me than when I first met her. I wonder if I should have refrained from mentioning the orc bloodline stuff. Oh Nethys, I don't know! At least Istikali seem to understand me!
"I do not know it's name Zorestar, why don't you ask her?"
"I may be a wizard with a raven, but that doesn't mean that I can talk with the animals. Is this a skill that Telias has?"
This is great! If I ask Telias, he is probably going to tell me that my horse's name is probably Bastard Horse or Mongrel Beast or something uncouth. I think I may need to come up with my own name for her. I wonder if she would like the name isosceles?

"...for a reclusive forester you have knack for coin."
"Yes well as a reclusive forester, I've grown accustom to the fact that coins merely fill in what proper trade cannot offer."
"...I was wondering if the engineer who created the weapon saw fit to produce such diagrams and schematics that would allow its wielder to find the optimum angle at which to hold the bow to allow for the greatest amount of accuracy and damage."
"If such a document exists I doubt you will find it anywhere close by. Follow the girl's lead, she boasts herself an expert though I haven't seen her shoot very often."

Zorestar Lebeda |

"If such a document exists I doubt you will find it anywhere close by. Follow the girl's lead, she boasts herself an expert though I haven't seen her shoot very often."
"Well, thank you, Ganit, I shall follow your advice on that. Mind you, she does not seem a very patient sort of teacher. Her temperament seems . . . well . . . let's just say that I think I will have better luck using trial and error. Now, tell me sir, you said that you find the crossbow to be bulky and imprecise. What is your weapon of choice for ranged shots? I notice a bow slung over your shoulder. Do you find that to be a better weapon than the crossbow? Do you fancy yourself a good shot with it?"

The Hermit Ganit D'Artain |

"Well, thank you, Ganit, I shall follow your advice on that. Mind you, she does not seem a very patient sort of teacher. Her temperament seems . . . well . . . let's just say that I think I will have better luck using trial and error."
"Whatever suits you best, kid. She's mostly talk anyways. Worst she'll do is send you to bed before supper."
"What is your weapon of choice for ranged shots? I notice a bow slung over your shoulder. Do you find that to be a better weapon than the crossbow? Do you fancy yourself a good shot with it?"
Lightly fingering the cold, worn wood of his sweet Dahlia. "The bow is superior in nearly all respects. It's lighter, faster, shoots further, and easier to maintain than the crossbow. All you need is the strength to manipulate it. See how far you can pull the string back on this." He hands his bow over to Zorestar to prove his point. "They're more expensive, more difficult to wield, and more likely to leave you sore after a day of use. Benefits outweigh the drawbacks if you ask me." He watches for a moment as the mage struggles with task before him. "A good shot? Hmm... More often than not I will hit what I'm aiming for, but I am far from the best around."

DM Aron Marczylo |

It takes you three hours from Oleg's to travel into the section of the forest where the moon radishes were. Some appear to start growing again and you see a kobold or two gorging themselves, but they cause you no threat.
I assume you guys inform Zorestar before he attacks them that you have an agreement with the Kobolds and they aren't going to attack you. Also as a note to him, these kobolds are black scaled and a different species to normal kobolds, however they are the same as normal kobolds only with a fondness for water and swimming.
You then take 5 hours to navigate through the forest, somewhat longer due to the wagon in toe and then you arrive back in the planes outside the forest. Many of you remember this area as you were here before, but you never mapped it out. Here there is a single rocky outcrop with vains of what you identified as gold. It's about 5pm now from all the travelling.
Also, who is sitting on the caravan and have the watching orders changed? I still need to write that down as a reminder.

Carina Stigard |

Proposed watch.
Bron/Carina first watch
James/Ganit (non casters) middle watch
Zorestar/Telias last watch.
I imagine that James or Ganit is in the lead on the planes. Ganit or Telias in the forest. My vote is to have Zorestar guide the wagon since he is so concerned about falling of his horse.

DM Aron Marczylo |

oops, soorry I've taken you guys off the way you were planing to do and instead into the first black area, lol. Sorry, still a little groggy. Where is your planned direction afterwards?

Carina Stigard |

I planned on going down the unmapped areas first. My route was from Oleg's --> SE, SW, SW, W, SW, E, SE, NE. I think that Ganit posted another route, but we never really voted on which one we wanted. I would prefer to clear the unmapped areas on the way south so that we can get any good loot and if we need to, can return and resupply before the final Staglord assault.

DM Aron Marczylo |

Okey, anyway what's the plan now you've found the gold mine? I assume just map and then move one.

Zorestar Lebeda |

If there is a wagon, Zorestar will take that!
Zorestar rides along in the wagon as the party ventures onward. Being a newcomer to this band of adventurers, he trusts to their opinion let's them decide where they are going. He only offers his opinion on such matters if he is asked.
This is getting rather old, rather fast. This wagon certainly does not feel as comfortable as riding in the carriages back in Qadir! Oh, thank Nethys we are stopping. I cannot believe how stiff I am from simply riding in a wagon. My legs are tired, my arms are tired and I ache all over!
"So is this where we are stopping for the night? Do you mind if I rest for a while before I do anything else? So who cooks dinner around here on these little trips? I would be happy to help, but I'm afraid I did not bring a cookbook with me."

Carina Stigard |

Yup, unless someone else wants to change the plan, I say keep moving. We have to eventually map every hex unless we want some big unknown in the middle of our nation. (Think of Switzerland to the EU except you do not know what is in Switzerland or when there might suddenly be a grand outpouring of ogres, dragons, demons, or yodelers.)
Partial ninjaed - I actually figured we would just attack the fort when we get there unless we decide that subsequent to investigation there is something else we need. We are fairly well equipped - James has his armor, you have your armor. I cannot afford any rods yet.
Darn - multiple cross posts:
"So is this where we are stopping for the night? Do you mind if I rest for a while before I do anything else? So who cooks dinner around here on these little trips? I would be happy to help, but I'm afraid I did not bring a cookbook with me."
Looking at Zorestar with a bemused look: Well, the safest thing is to eat the rations I hope you brought with you. Ganit frequently finds a hare or something else to eat and we just spit that over the fire. If you want something more than that, none of us will complain if you feel the need to bring a professional chef along for the ride.

The Hermit Ganit D'Artain |

Whoops, figured I'd delete that post since Aron moved things along. Would it be a good idea to buy a disguise kit or two? Also, does anyone know what is currently on our wagon? I remember drawing up a list of stuff for it but it's not on anyone's character sheet.
Ganit lays out the traps in ~20 foot radius from where the fire pit is being dug, taking his time to carefully secure and cover them. He breaks open a waterskin as he returns to the others and hastily gulps half of it down then pours a bit on the back of his neck. "I left a clear patch near those trees over there if anyone needs to step away from camp for some late night privacy, otherwise there's a decent chance you can lose a leg if you wander to close. Hope you're no sleepwalker, Lebeda."

DM Aron Marczylo |

I assume you spoke with Oleg, in there should be the stuff you liberated and extra that Oleg has gained over the weeks. I was also pointing out there is enough rooms to put in empty boxes to make it look like there is more stuff there or any other idea you wish to put inside crates. Eitherway, the caravan needs two horses and so two riders.

It takes quite some time to map out the area that the next morning you don't get moving until 6pm due to all the time spent mapping out the area in every detail before heading down south before coming to a bridge.
It appears to be a very unstable bridge across this river that cuts through the area. It'll be impossible to cross this area with the caravan without it breaking apart and dropping the occupants into the river. It's dark now and 9pm.
At night you notice a beautiful display of two Faerie Dragons dancing around in some kind of beautiful rainbow dance. The wings appear to be that of large, beautiful butterflies as they circle each other and pass the camp.
It appears as if these two are in a mating dance and will most likely cause no harm to anyone.
The next day it ends up late, so you spend another night here before setting off in the morning.
Once the morning comes you have a option of directions to go.

DM Aron Marczylo |

I believe it's SE; considering we can't cross this bridge we have to look for a crossing down south.
true, but you guys have come across this river in the forest before and it narrows out in there, so both SE and W are viable options. Plus the boggard's home is west too.

Zorestar Lebeda |

"I left a clear patch near those trees over there if anyone needs to step away from camp for some late night privacy, otherwise there's a decent chance you can lose a leg if you wander to close. Hope you're no sleepwalker, Lebeda."
I am pleased to know that you keep us so well protected, Ganit! I will remember not to go wandering around after dark. What do you suggest I do if err, . . . you know . .. nature calls?"
"Well, the safest thing is to eat the rations I hope you brought with you. Ganit frequently finds a hare or something else to eat and we just spit that over the fire. If you want something more than that, none of us will complain if you feel the need to bring a professional chef along for the ride."
"I admit, all of our meals were taken care of while I attended Vortexarium. Furthermore, I never needed to worry about meals while I live back in the Lebeda family estate. So you are telling me that these rations are the staple by which we gain all of our sustenance?! I thought they were snacks for the road that we could nibble on while we were riding!"
Oh dear. Oh dear. Oh dear! This is getting worse by the day! Now I find out that there are rarely hot cooked meals! I hope we will be able to establish this kingdom as soon as possible!
"I understan' where yer comin from. I can't deal with my digestive business without a good book ta accompanae me."
"The book I was referring to was to be used for cooking recipes to help with the creation of some hot delicious meals. The book was not intended to be err light reading while you uhm sat and tried to clean out your digestive tract!"
Either this man is very crude, or he truly has some serious digestion issues. I just can't tell which it is! Allthough, the digestion issues would certainly explain his grumpy demeanor.
"So tell me, Telias, what do you bring for reading out on long journey away from the comforts of home?"
At night you notice a beautiful display of two Faerie Dragons dancing around in some kind of beautiful rainbow dance. The wings appear to be that of large, beautiful butterflies as they circle each other and pass the camp.

Zorestar looks up at the Fairie Dragons and exclaims, "What a beautiful sight to see! I guess there are some rewards to camping outside! How wonderful it is two see two magical creatures falling in love! If I am not mistaken, these two dragons are in a rare mating dance. It would be best to give them their space. I assure you, they will not be a problem to us in the slightest!"

Carina Stigard |

Upon seeing the faerie dragons, you see Carina's eyes flare and she immediately has a ball of acid in her hand ready to throw at the dragons when Zorestar's voice brings her back to reality and she releases the acid into the ground.
Turning to Bron - See, peaceful woodland creatures and I almost killed them. I cannot live in a civilization where innocent people might get hurt. I am cursed to never be able to live in a city or town where I might be surprised.
With that, Carina turns and begins creating and launching acid ball after acid ball into a nearby rock in frustration.

Sir Bronwyn Raslov |

At Carina's surprise Bronwyn quickly puts a hand in her shoulder, trying to reassure her.
"I'm here, Carina, do not worry, I won't let it happen."
He holds her hands and gets in front of her, blocking the sight of the dragon-like creatures and offering a distraction.
"Here, it's not the rocks's fault... If being thick was punishable by acid, I would look like a burnt candle."

"Korvosan Farmer's Almanac." Telias responds. "Lasts me all year and lights quick even in the rain. Pages are nice and soft too. Not a bad investment for 8 silver. 4 if I get last years addition."

Jameson Addercop IV |

Jameson laughs at Telias' explanation of his fiber intake and how he deals with it.
"Carina you are too hard on yourself. You're not cursed, you just need to learn to relax. Although out here that might be a bad thing. And in the wilds. I'm sure I had a point here, but mostly what I'm saying is you're too high strung. Once you come to peace with who you are in this world you will find your place in it."
Although I was sent here for harming the innocent, so maybe I should leave this to Sir Raslov.

DM Aron Marczylo |

Actually I read it wrong. West isn't a option but SE and NW are as the old camp had a stable bridge.

With that, Carina turns and begins creating and launching acid ball after acid ball into a nearby rock in frustration.
"My Dear Carina, pray tell, what are you doing? If you trying to dissolve this rock with the use of an acid splash, I am not sure that it will succeed. You may be able to discolor the outside, but due to the hardness of the rock, I doubt you will be able to remove any of the mass. Either way, I am not clear why you wish to destroy this rock. However, if indeed this is your plan, I think you are going about it the wrong way. You need to look into something like transmute rock to mud, or even something more powerful such as disintegrate. Mind you, as a specialist in air elementalism, earth based spells are some of the most difficult spells for me to cast. I'm afraid that I will not be much use to you in the research of such elemental arcane knowledge. At this point in time, may I recommend that you simply ask Jameson to pick it up and move it for you."
"Korvosan Farmer's Almanac." Telias responds. "Lasts me all year and lights quick even in the rain. Pages are nice and soft too. Not a bad investment for 8 silver. 4 if I get last years addition."
Soft pages? What is he worried about?! Getting a paper cut?!
As realization dawns on him.
Oh dear, I don't think he actually reads the book, but uses it for a fire starter! What sacrilege! I hate the thought of fire ever reaching one of my precious tomes! And using it to clean oneself! Disgusting! Banish the thought!"
"My dear Telias, do you not feel some remorse in even the thought of burning a perfectly good book? Somebody clearly took the time to scribe it. Perhaps you should read it to see what they have to say! Writing is truly a marvelous invention, and you can discover a great many things through the use of books and scrolls. Perhaps you should consider using it for such purpose."

The Hermit Ganit D'Artain |

I am pleased to know that you keep us so well protected, Ganit!
Ganit grunts something harshly under his breath and looks back to Zorestar with caustic eye, "Don't thank me yet."
Ganit absently polishes his axe and dagger with a whetstone as he enjoy's overhearing Telias and Zorestar discuss the fine points of literature. On occasion he stops and surveys the area surrounding the camp to ensure the adventurers do not become crossed with anything more than a pair of libidinous fey.
Carina's reaction to the tasteful display caught him off guard, more so was the reactions of the others. Each person doing their best to censor and secure her left a most sickening taste in the ranger's mouth. Rather than running off to console the teenage girl with all the rest, Ganit sits back and remarks to Telias: "Let her be. It's better she takes that rage out on the dragons or rocks than one of us."

Telias Markan |

"Can't trust books." Telias says. "Don't know who wrote them and you can't tell if they're lyin. If other people want to put their trust in fancy words that be there business."

DM Aron Marczylo |

So...choice on a direction? continue through the unmapped area and head SE?

Jameson Addercop IV |

I vote for SE along the river.
Jameson shrugs and wanders back to Ganit and Telias.
"We should follow the river tomorrow, see if there's anything interesting that way before we make a push to the Stag Lord. Who knows, if they have patrols out we may be able to weaken them before we get to the fort."

Would you prefer I threw the acid at you? I do not know whether it would help my temper any, but undoubtedly it would be more effective than attacking the rock.
Lets backtrack to the old camp and cross the river there. Unless someone has another route.

Zorestar Lebeda |

"Would you prefer I threw the acid at you? I do not know whether it would help my temper any, but undoubtedly it would be more effective than attacking the rock."
Zorestar is clearly demoralized by the intimidating glare and the strong words.
Dear Nethys, help! This poor girl is a Changling Sorcerer! Look at those eyes! I don't know what I've done, but that orc blood is raging through her in pure anger! Just get out of here as fast as you can!
"Sorry Carina, I did not mean to bother you! I will leave immediately."
He leaves that instant and runs across camp to sit on a rock on the other end of the site. Trying to calm his nerves, he takes out his calculus book to escape and immerse himself in another world free of conflict.

Love those books. The movie was not bad either. I loved the depressing voice of Alan Rickman for Marvin the robot.
The fact that the fifth book lists itself as the Fifth Book in the "Increasingly Inaccurately Named Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy" just rocks.

DM Aron Marczylo |

Okey that's three for SE and one for the other, will go SE.

Takes you some time to move down as this area is all very hilly terrain and you come to a area where the rivers all become shallow at this point. The Thorn River goes into the Shrike and it's unusually shallow here. You recon that it is no deeper than three feet of water.
It isn't too deep so it is easy enough to get the caravan across to the other side. This area is very open and a good place to camp.

Carina Stigard |

Ganit, what do you think? Is this a good camping spot? And is it safe to cross the river with the wagon?
__________
Listening to Zorestar complain. I don't think it is the caravan that is tired. The horses are good for a few more hours if necessary. It is the other animals which may need to be whipped.

Telias Markan |

"Ye can whip any animal you please maam, 'slong as I get two lashes on the whipper for every lash given to an animal." Dismounting his horse he takes a cursory look over the mare's shoes and quickly picking pebbles from her hooves while his hawk stares at the raven uncomfortably. "Right, do weh need ta go scroungin? Might be some decent catnoodlin here in dis river."

Zorestar Lebeda |

When the opportunity presents itself, Zorestar will take, Bron and Jameson aside in private and have an urgent discussion with them.
"Master Jameson, Sir Bronwyn, I must talk to both of you in private. There is a serious matter about Carina that I need to address, but I am not sure who I should talk to about it."
"Carina is a remarkable woman and she obviously has a natural beauty to her. However, you may have noticed that there is also something unnerving about her appearance. Have you ever recognized that Carina has two eyes of different color, one piercing blue, and the other is blood red. This is characteristic of a creature I believe to be a changeling. If my analysis is correct, she likely the offspring of a hag!"
"Do not look so panic stricken, my friends! You must listen to me carefully. You see, when a hag of any sort conceives a child with a man, the result is a changeling. The male parent is usually eaten or killed by his partner before he can see the offspring, or else flees the area in shame upon discovering the true nature of his lover, and the hag herself interacts with the child just long enough to set it on the stoop of some unsuspecting family or temple. Now, I don't know enough of Carina's background, but all the evidence I've seen points in this direction. Do you know if she was adopted as a child?"
"Now, a changeling and her new family are never aware of the strange child’s true parents, but in most cases everyone involved is keenly aware that there is something odd about the frail child with the ghostly pallor. Even the young girl herself can easily see that she possesses abilities others do not — powers that are subtle at younger ages and only truly begin to manifest themselves when she reaches adolescence. Now, the eyes in themselves would not necessarily be enough evidence, but just getting to know Carina as I am, and witnessing her wield these arcane powers, makes me think that she is indeed a changeling!"
"However, there is much more that I must tell you. It is around puberty that the changeling begins to hear what hags refer to as “the call,” a hypnotic, spiritual voice that only she can hear and that beckons her to travel. To where, the changeling does not know, but the underlying prospect of finding out her true origins is often enough to drive the girl to seek out the source of this mystical voice."
"The voice is in fact that of the changeling’s birth mother, who forms a coven with two others hags in order to summon her child back to her, now that she is old enough to fully transform into a hag. This transformative ritual is a barbaric one that only the most determined changelings willingly go through; upon arriving at the coven, it is usually too late to turn back for changelings who were merely drawn to the voice by curiosity. Those who seek power, however, identify with the hags, and happily go through the ordeal in order to unlock their dormant abilities. Regardless of her desires, though, a changeling who has undergone the transformation cannot go back; once she becomes a hag, she remains a hag, and her mind turns as wicked as her form has turned hideous."
"Now the good news is that changelings who ignore the call eventually cease to hear it. However, in some cases, the hag mother will sometimes disguise herself and venture into civilization, seeking out her daughter. If she finds her, she will lure the girl back to the coven, where she can perform the ritual of transformation. The process of performing the call or physically retrieving the changeling is taxing, though, and many hags find it easier to simply lure in another mate and birth another changeling in hopes that this one will heed the evertantalizing call. Let us hope that this will be the case."
"Now, I do not know enough about Carina's background, but I do know that families who inadvertently raise changelings often react in one of two ways toward the strange child’s development of supernatural powers: they either embrace the girl, nurturing her and her gift, or they disown her as an abomination, casting her out into a world of loneliness and resentment. Of course, this reaction to her power often has a huge influence over the changeling’s course of action as a young adult. Changelings who are accepted by their adopted society often don’t see the need to follow their mothers’ voices, instead using their powers for their own ends, whereas shunned individuals almost always answer the call and become treacherous hags with embittered hearts and shattered souls. This last point is so important that I will repeat it again. Changelings who are accepted by their adopted society often do not see the need to follow their mothers’ voices."
"So I urge you all to be kind to this young woman, support her in every way and to help her to nurture her arcane gifts. Otherwise, she will likely abandon all of us, to answer "the call." Now, I hope I have made it explicitly clear what the implications are to all of us. We must try to help Carina feel safe and comfortable with us and her powers. Furthermore, we must remain vigilant in case a hag mother appears in search of her daughter."
Zorestar looks to the others to gauge their reactions. Finally he says, "What questions do you have for me?"

Jameson Addercop IV |

Jameson shrugs after Zorestar is done.
"My brother was a sorceror and killed for being different Zorestar. I care nothing for Carina's past. Her present and her actions are all that matter. If she stays true, I will count her a loyal friend. If she falls to darkness, I will kill her and know it's how she would want it. Or I may die tomorrow fighting bandits and this point is moot. You worry too much about the future and the past. We have today, the wind, the water, and our lives. Let the past lie and tomorrow worry about itself."

The Hermit Ganit D'Artain |

Ganit, what do you think? Is this a good camping spot? And is it safe to cross the river with the wagon?
"Should probably find out." Ganit replies indifferently before removing his boots and taking a few steps into the river to test the weight and speed of the water before waving the wagon through.
It'd be safer to set up camp at least a quarter mile from the river that way we avoid whatever is coming down for a drink. This shallow area is likely to bring some heavy traffic we would be best to avoid."
"So, you think if I were to knock a few of his noble teeth out that would solve things?"
"It's not something I'd recommend," Ganit admits with little with little expression to show for it. "It put us at odds and animosity in any degree should be avoided while we're here in lawless lands. Too much is at stake for things to get out of hand. Better to just pick fights with sticks and stones, little lady. At least until we find out what he's worth."
After setting the nightly camp defenses and gathering wood for fire, Ganit joins Telias at the river for some fishing. Though his approach is far more relaxing and traditional.
Survival: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

My point exactly lol! He's referring to a fishing technique called noodling where you find catfish holes/nests/what-have-you and stick your hands in to pull them out. The video is actually pretty cool but this link will do just as well.
