Fenna Thistleswade |
"That would seem the simplest way of drawing it out," Fenna agrees, "once we are all ready I shall call forth one of Aroden's servitors."
"I would suggest that we move closer, however, I would like a better look at the thing before we attack, and too great a distance might prove a hindrance to preventing its escape."
Kalev Lehola |
Well, I was going to suggest using Malthir's horse as bait, but if you have a miracle up your robe, that might be more to Malthir's liking, Kalev says with a laugh, readying his spear for whatever might arise.
Fenna Thistleswade |
"Hence my desire to get a closer look, once we can identify the creature, it will be easier to determine if there is the possibility of a peaceful conclusion... but first we must draw it out,"
"I call for the aid of Z'krunga, constant companion to The Beggar, he who heeds no barriers in the pursuit of the Last Azlanti's purpose."
Summon a Celestial Dire Rat in the shallows of the pool.

Almost immediately, the water ripples with motion as a massive turtle big enough to devour Fenna surges through the water to the shallows and bites the rat- huge jaws clamping shut on the poor rat as it is almost instantaneously sent back to the place it was summoned from. The monstrous turtle immediately spots the rest of you and moves to attack...
Hey, better result than it happening to one of you right...? :P. The turtle is medium sized...

Kalev would you have your longspear out? I pretty much assume you do at the start of every encounter thats not a total surprise to you & when your in the wilderness, that about right?

Kalev Lehola |
He has returned: Scalemail +1 (600 gp), MW Greataxe (160 gp), MW Longspear (152 gp): Total share of 6715 gp.
Casimir |
Seeing the massive animal rise from the waters, Casimir grabs one of his magic arrows of animal bane and sends it flying towards the turtle.

Fenna's eyes widen slightly as the huge turtle erupts from the water, though she holds her ground as her Celestial ally dissipates.
Knowledge(nature) 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5: any idea what we're up against?
Edit: never mind.
Fenna spends a moment attuning herself to the tongue of the beasts, before calling out to it, holding up a hand to interrupt the rest of the Guardians before they follow Casimir's lead, "Wait! We do not want to harm you, unless you force us to do so."
Speak with animals
Fenna Thistleswade |
While the turtle seems to understand Fenna's words, it makes no move to stop its next attack. It seems to be ignoring her.
Do you have any actions left to resolve?
Nope, that's all.

Kalev's AOO-

The turtle leaps forward for Kalev and the warrior strikes at it as it goes for him. The magical Ranseur glances off the turtle's incredibly thick hide, but before Kalev is able to retract from the blow the turtle's teeth latch onto his weapon. Massive, powerful jaws almost shatter the weapon despite its magic, and shards of broken ranseur scatter over the cave. The magic within the blade spares it from total destruction by the narrowest of margins
Kalev's +1 Ranseur has hardness 7 and 20 hit points, and thus is at 1HP. It now has the 'Broken' condition.!

Fenna, Ilya, try to stun or incapacitate the beast! I will move out of the way.
Attack the turtle then 5' step back to L5.

After Ilya, Kalev uses Ranger's Focus on the turtle and draws his weapon. Before I roll the attack, I'd like to do a knowledge check to see if I can get some info.

Hmmm, this reminds me of something... :)
Ilya moves to the side of the cavern (hug the wall at M10) and a vivid cone of clashing colors springs forth from his hand.
Color spray aimed at Old Crackjaw. Will DC 15.
Kalev Lehola |
Kalev releases the shaft of the ranseur, draws his greataxe and swings it in an overhead arch, bringing it down on the turtle.

Casimir takes a step backwards, drops his bow and draws his sword. He then raises his voice in encouragement.
Courage, Guardians. He may be tough, but we will crack him yet.
5 ft. step back to J4. Begin Inspire Courage.
DM Alexander Kilcoyne |
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Fenna's colour spray blasts through the gap between Kalev and Malthir, narrowly missing them both. This time the turtle is overwhelmed by Fenna's magic and it immediately falls unconcious.
Aww I never got to break Kalev's axe or chew on Malthir's full plate :P.
Casimir |
Yay Fenna! Seeing as this bugger probably got a dirtload of hp, I suggest that I spend another Bane arrow on the coup-de-grace.
Oh, had better confirm that it is actually an animal, and not a magical beast. Knowledge (nature) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

The 2d6 from bane won't be multiplied, it might be best to let Kalev take care of it with his axe.
Edit: though it'll hopefully be stunned for a while, so we can take our time.

That's what I was thinking, the x3 power attack crit can't be beat with the axe! Trust me I have a 12th lvl Barbarian in my tabletop game with one and we have the sorcerer enchanter with hold monster, its a nice combo...lol's
Looking forward to the soup though...DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

Bring it...BTW I sleep in my armor now. Since I can LOH to remove fatigue each morning I don't worry about the soreness. I forgot to mention this so if you want I can be in just the studded leather even though I don't own it anymore?
Malthir Al Dagon |
The cave seems as good a camping spot as any - plus, we can have a closer look around and see if there is anything interesting in here besides fish and a dead turtle.
Also we should plan to remove the turtle from its shell, the shell will make a nice addition to our collection of defeated monster trophies. We already have the owl bear pelt, bear skin, boar tusks, the wyrm things head. We need to add the troll head (with the no regen candle feature underneath it, its the life of the party![/ooc]

Although yes, Malthir can remove his fatigue every morning, do you honestly think he would suffer an absolutely hellish night of sleep each night? If so, fair enough- just remember to lose one LOH each day.

I'm putting the finishing touches on a 30-page paper on the psychology of criminal conduct as we speak ;)
"I can hear guttural snarls coming from the tunnel leading into the cave, and an occasional low growling. I believe it would be prudent to investigate." He makes a cheesy smile and motions for Malthir to take the lead. "Walking boilerplate in front, please."
DM Alexander Kilcoyne |
Ilya gets time to wake the Guardians up before a snarling pack of several particularily large and strong wolves moves into the corridor before you, snarling at the sight of you...
These are no wolves at all, but Worgs- evil, brutal and intelligent wolves. They can speak and understand both common and goblin.
Ilya Shukhov |
Auto-success on Knowledge check with +13 modifier.
"These are no wolves at all, but Worgs- evil, brutal and intelligent wolves." Ilya steps forward and addresses them. "We are no easy prey, wolfkin. There are easier meals to be had elsewhere. I doubt you are so starving you would risk death for some meat. Leave, and we will do the same."

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |
The pack leader steps forward, a bigger Worg than the others. He appears to consider Ilya's offer carefully before replying-
This cave would be a good home for my pack, forest scum... We were driven out of our home in the forest. But my pack has diminished, and you are right to think that perhaps we don't want to risk more death...
The worg grins, revealing an awful set of sharp, jagged teeth.
Make it worth our while and we shall leave you be...
Ilya Shukhov |
Make it worth our while and we shall leave you be...
Ilya puts on his salesman smile. "Would your pack perhaps be interested in a great quantity of turtle meat? We killed Old Crackjaw just a few hours ago and I'm sure he is quite tasty from gorging himself over the years. That would probably feed your pack for several days. I'm sure you could use a chance to rest and glut and rut."

The worg chuckles at Ilya's pitch.
Very well. We shall feast on turtleflesh instead of yours this night. Two of you carry it out of these caves- and we will be watching for any treachery...
The worgs slowly withdraw out of the tunnel, eyes watching for threats the whole time.
Kalev Lehola |
At the conclusion of the battle with the turtle, having cleaned his greataxe of the gore from its brains, Kalev picks up the almost shattered ranseur, a sad expression on his face.
Darn...does anyone know how to fix magical weapons? I was kinda fond of this one...
-----
As the Worgs make their demand, Kalev is holding his greataxe in hand, just in case.
