Pallas Morningstar |
If there's any way to hide it from view (try to fake being sick?), I will cast cure serious wounds on myself before I get hooded.
If possible: Cure serious wounds: 3d8 + 10 ⇒ (5, 6, 3) + 10 = 24 with Bluff check to fake be sick: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (18) + 20 = 38
Pallas Morningstar |
Pallas tries to focus his mind away from the incredible burning pain long enough to cast his most powerful healing spell. Concentration check : 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (7) + 16 = 23
DM Feral |
A minute later, the hoods are slipped on and tied.
Two doors are opened on opposite sides of the room.
Daxter and Valeros are lead through one and the rest of the aspirants are lead through the other.
Galio whispers, "There's a two humans - the woman from the previous room and another one. We're in a mid-sized room. There's no exits."
Perception: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (1) + 19 = 20
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19
A moment later, Daxter's hood is removed and he sees one hooded cultist forcing Valeros to his knees. Valeros is still blinded by the black cloth bag.
The woman throws back his hood revealing flawless pale varisian features. She smiles sweetly revealing canines ending in deadly points.
"The greatest gift Lissala has to offer is eternal life", Charito explains. "It shall be yours. But there is one last rite you must undergo, to show us that you are dedicated to the goddess above all else. Take this knife, and with it, remove the heart of the wretch before you. Feast upon that heart, for those who are unworthy to serve in life should feed those who rule with their blood. The blood will baptize you, and the hour of your glorious transformation will be at hand."
Roll a knowledge: religion.
DM Feral |
Everyone is forced to their knees.
"Here is where your worship will begin", one of the cultists says.
The sound of a hood being removed can be heard followed by an awkward silence.
"I will obey the will of Lissala", one of the aspirants can be heard answering back.
Everyone roll a sense motive check.
Pallas Morningstar |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25
Daxter Bateman |
Daxter keeps his composure when he realizes that there is a vampire in the room. Daxter takes his knife and raises it high in the air only to bring it down.
Bluff to hide my intentions: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (9) + 18 = 27
Onto Valero's blindfold!
"Get up and fight you fool. We need to kill a vampire."
DM Feral |
Daxter: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Valeros: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Feaster: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Charito: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Charito hisses at the betrayal and his assistant is swift to lunge forward and swing a stony fist at Daxter.
Slam: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Damage plus two negative levels: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
But his fist bounces off of the wizard's numerous magical defenses.
The woman steps forward and attacks as well.
Sneaky Slam: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Damage plus two negative levels: 1d4 + 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + (2, 6, 6) + 6 = 21
Valeros and Daxter are up.
Valeros Two-Blade |
"Thanks...friend. Wouldn't know what to do without ya."
With that, Valeros spins around, drawing his blades and swinging a longsword at Charito, yelling "Hey, get offa him and pick on someone your own size!"
Longsword attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
Critical confirm: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Crit damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Pallas Morningstar |
Any chance of hearing combat from the other room?
DM Feral |
Black ichor is spilled by Valeros's blade and Charito narrows her hateful gaze before pressing the attack with her companion.
Feaster: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Damage plus two negative levels: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Charito: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Damage plus two negative levels: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
You two are up.
Valeros Two-Blade |
Valeros narrows his eyes, then grins a bit. "If sharing a foe doesn't make us friends, I'm not sure what will."
He swings his swords brutally, one arm alternating with the other, at Charito until she goes down.
1st Longsword: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
1st Swordsword: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
2nd Longsword: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
2nd Swordsword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Daxter Bateman |
"Well, I value your contribution. That should be enough." Daxter steps back again and fires off a penta of magic missiles at Charito.
5d4 + 5 ⇒ (1, 2, 4, 1, 4) + 5 = 17
Amira El-Amin |
SM: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31
Pallas Morningstar |
I misread my Sense Motive mod. My total check (see above) should actually be 33.
Pallas Morningstar |
Pallas attempts to throw the hood off of his head, while disguising it to look like he did it involuntarily while sneezing. Bluff check to make it look like a really bad sneeze: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (17) + 20 = 37
Pallas Morningstar |
"Pardon me, but this place makes me sneeze. Do you have a mold problem?" he says, pulling a scroll of protection from evil from out of his tunic.
DM Feral |
"Kill him", one of the cultists says.
Amira: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (14) + 0 = 14
Harsk: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Pallas: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Feasters: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Pallas (and everyone else once they get their hoods off) sees that you appear to be in a well furnished office space. Lined up against the wall with the three pathfinders are the four other aspirants the party met earlier. Everyone except for Pallas is still wearing their hoods.
On the other side of the room are cultists with their hoods pulled back. They have pale smooth features but a hateful predatory glare in their soulless eyes. They sneer revealing sharpened canines.
Religion.
The party is up.
Pallas Morningstar |
Pallas' eyes grow wide as he sees the cultists with the smooth skin, "Such alabaster complexion, and so smooth! I am envious." Knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Pallas Morningstar |
Pallas jumps up from his kneeling position, quickly moving in front of his fellow Pathfinders while drawing his scimitar. He takes on a defensive stance versus any who might harm He flicks his wrists and shakes out his legs, ready for combat. His scimitar crackles with a purple glow. (Move action to stand, 5' Step to move to square Y6; draw scimitar as move; swift action to activate Arcane Strike)
Pallas Morningstar |
Pallas does not simply stand there, however. His feet and entire body enter a waving, snake like dance.
(Oops, I forgot, free action to enter the Dance of 23 Steps.)
Harsk McLarson |
Harsk hears someone making moves to his side. He shakes off his hood and stands up. He notices the aggressive look on the three cultist's faces and Pallas' stance. So, he rushes forward toward the pale-skinned cultist directly in front of him. As he moves forward, he readies his battlaxe to deal with the cultists. Move to X.8
"Gorram cultists. I knew this would end badly."
I figured that removing a hood would be a swift action, or something that I could combine with the move to stand up. So, if it's no good to do that, then my two move actions are to remove my hood and stand up.
Amira El-Amin |
Amira removes her hood and un-pockets her holy symbol cufflinks, hoping to keep them somewhat hidden for now.
Laughable Sleight of Hand, maybe?: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (10) + 0 = 10
Amira El-Amin |
Oh, and the better roll. Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (2) + 15 = 17
Irrelevant Fun Fact: I just now saw/remembered that I had a feat to pick at 9th that is still empty. Whoops! Blank feat slots, ahoy!
Pallas Morningstar |
"Gorram cultists. I knew this would end badly."
Pallas barks out, "Harsk and Amira, these are vampire spawn. They are susceptible to magic! Stay near me!"
This is for everyone. I have the Bodyguard feat and have optimized myself to keep my fellow Pathfinders from harm. In game terms, this means that as long as you are adjacent to me, I can use my AoO to make Aid Another rolls to make you harder to hit. What this means is that as long as I don't roll a natural 1, your AC (normal, touch, and ff) goes up by 8 points. So I would highly advise you to stay near me. I have 7 AoO a round, which is generally enough.
DM Feral |
Amira, Harsk, Pallas
The vampire spawn advance while the other aspirants scream in terror.
Vs Harsk: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage plus two negative levels: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Confirming Vs Pallas: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Extra Damage plus 2 additional levels: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Wow. 4 negative levels for Pallas.
Daxter and Valeros
More of Charito's black blood is spilled but she shrieks and attacks again.
Charito vs Valeros: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Damage plus 2 negative levels: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Feaster vs Valeros: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Damage plus 2 negative levels: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Pallas Morningstar |
GM Feral: In order to speed things up, I will preroll 10 Aid Another checks. Please use these results any time an ally of mine within my reach is attacked. Note that Bodyguard applies to all attacks, not just in melee. Since my attack bonus will fall below +9 very rarely, I am simply making straight d20 rolls. The Aid Another action only fails on a natural 1.
1. Aid Another: 1d20 ⇒ 9
2. Aid Another: 1d20 ⇒ 20
3. Aid Another: 1d20 ⇒ 7

Ow. Good thing I'm 10th level.
Amira El-Amin |
With all these negative levels, falling below 9 seems more and more likely, do ho ho.
"Enough of this!" Amira utilizes her knowledge of Channeling to help annihilate the undead.
Channels: 7d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 4, 3, 1, 5, 1) = 217d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3) = 16 DC is a piddly DC 17
Pallas Morningstar |
It's worth noting that Bodyguard is still Aid Another so you have to follow all of the mechanics associated with it.
The mechanics are actually slightly different. Aid Another requires you to be within range of the attacker, while the Bodyguard feat specifies that you have to be adjacent to the person you are defending. What other mechanics are there?
Pallas Morningstar |
** spoiler omitted **
Are the "Feasters" in the initiative order the other acolytes or the vampire spawn?
DM Feral |
Bodyguard does not eliminate the need to be adjacent to the attacker. It just has the added requirement of requiring you to be adjacent to your ally.
When an adjacent ally is attacked, you may use an attack of opportunity to attempt the aid another action to improve your ally’s AC. You may not use the aid another action to improve your ally’s attack roll with this attack.
In melee combat, you can help a friend attack or defend by distracting or interfering with an opponent. If you're in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action. You make an attack roll against AC 10. If you succeed, your friend gains either a +2 bonus on his next attack roll against that opponent or a +2 bonus to AC against that opponent's next attack (your choice), as long as that attack comes before the beginning of your next turn. Multiple characters can aid the same friend, and similar bonuses stack.
Don't worry, I'm not going to have the bad guys go out of their way to foil your bodyguarding but protecting people from ranged attacks is very difficult.
The Feasters are the Vampire Spawn.
Will: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Will: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Will: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Not that it matters but does Amira ignore channel resistance?
All three vampire spawn hiss and burn under Abadar's axiomatic light.
Pallas and Harsk are up.
Harsk McLarson |
"Vampire spawn? What the devil..."
Harsk removes his +1battle axe and swings at the feaster before him.
Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Amira El-Amin |
No sun domain, so no Channel Resistance ignoring; Abadar doesn't have it, and an indoor bookworm like Amira would never have it. Only the rarely-useful Community domain is at her disposal (due to my lack of reading about having only one domain on this horrible archetype.) I figured we could use some damage on all of them instead of some paltry healing.
Pallas Morningstar |
Pallas screams out in pain as his very life energy is torn from his body. "Damn you all to the Pit of Gormuz!" he yells in Kelish. His hands twitch momentarily as he ducks out of the vampire's reach to cast a spell. Immediately, a small group of additional Pallases spring up around him, all mirroring the bard's every action. Despite his weakened body, the dancer then attempts to wind his way through his undead opponents so that he can defend the dwarf and the Qadiran woman simultaneously. (Concentration check to cast mirror image defensively (DC 19): 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (18) + 16 = 34; Number of images created: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4; Acrobatics checks to move through three different vampire spawn's threatened squares to square W6: Acrobatics vs. F2:: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (19) + 16 = 35, Acrobatics vs. F3: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (14) + 16 = 30, Acrobatics vs. F4: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 16 = 29; free action to maintain Dance of 23 Steps; swift action to continue Arcane Striking)
Pallas Morningstar |
Well, at least we're both rolling well, Feral.
DM Feral |
High rolls for everyone!
Amira, Harsk, and Pallas
Harsk’s keen-edged axe is buried in the chest of the nearest vampire. The cultist goes rigid and then melts away into a pale mist that slowly drifts toward the double doors on the southern side of the room.
Pallas’s spell goes off unhindered and the vampires struggle to follow the bard’s swift movements.
Undeterred, the vampires advance.
Vs Harsk: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Bodyguard: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Vs Pallas: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Damage: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Images: 1d20 ⇒ 3
One vampire’s attack is deflected by the bard’s flashing blade and the other vampire’s fist unerringly slams into the jaw of an image dispersing it.
LOL, those natural 20s are coming for you Pallas!
The party is up but I’m not going to resolve them until the other group catches up.
Pallas Morningstar |
Wow, really glad I cast that spell!
