Iff, do you think that Catina and Faustinia have ever met? I would write up a short meeting/diary post about it but I don't know if we ever decided whether they were aware of each other.

We didn't decide yet. I've given it some thought, but haven't come up with any plausible way of them being acquainted and having a meaningful relationship. Faustinia doesn't strike me as the person to visit the temple of Shelyn. ;)

If might be better instead to have them totally not knowing each other, so that we can roleplay the start of their relationship in-game?

I agree, I can't think of any way they would cross paths in their day to day without some contrived reasons. And I think the start of the campaign will provide a much better reason for them to meet than anything I can think of right now.

Hey everyone, sorry for my silence in the last few weeks but life has started to get crazy and I couldn't manage to keep up two different threads. I'm glad to announce that my other PbP campaign, the Price of Immortality arc in which both mechaPoet and Iff played with me, has reached its conclusion. Therefore, I'm now much freer to devote my attention to this thread, so expect news from me in the next few days.

Council of Thieves Maps

OK guys, after a weekend of break from PbP activities, I’m finally ready to devote you the attentions you deserve. I would like to start with Lorenzo, as promised; I’ll begin with detailing a few ideas I got while reading an article concerning Iomedae that is completely legal for our game.

A few ideas inspired by Iomedae featured article.

• «Iomedae was born a mortal in Cheliax» ― Thus, patriotism and Iomedae’s worship are compatible and this link comes almost naturally; Iomedae was one of Cheliax’s greatest heroes, and those who believe in her are firmly convinced that Cheliax should have emulated her instead of turning to diabolism during the harsh days of the Civil War. I suggest to give Lorenzo a marked patriotic motivation; not one concerning current Cheliax, but a patriotism inspired to the pre-Thrune Cheliax and his former glory. As a result, part of his patriotism should consist in believing that Westcrown is the true capital of Cheliax, the symbol of his past glory and the model a true Cheliaxian should conform to.

• «When Aroden died, Iomedae inherited most of Aroden’s remaining followers» ― To a Cheliaxan faithful of Iomedae, this could mean that when Aroden died, the country should have searched certainty in his rightful Inheritor instead in the dark embrace of diabolism. Current Iomeae worshippers in Cheliax consider themselves as inheritors of pre-Thrune Cheliax, although this is a dangerous position to hold in public and priests and paladins are encouraged to keep it private, fighting gradually in order to restore the way things should have gone in the past.

Valor, glory, honor, justice, and strength ― Key concepts of Iomedae as a goddess and ideals to which her worshippers on Golarion inspire their lives. Lorenzo should be eager to be valorous, acquire glory for himself, his family, his home city and his country, pursue justice even in the devil-haunted country of Cheliax, even by strength if necessary.

• «Though skilled in war, Iomedae does not see herself as a war-deity; she would rather convince evildoers to lay down their arms in honorable surrender than cut them down in the midst of battle, but she is fearless and willing to fight for what she believes in. […] She loathes incorrigible evil, fiend-spawn, traitors, » ― I think that this should be the starting attitude Lorenzo has been taught to behave according by his holy text. This would also justify his high Diplomacy modifier and his frequent use of that skill. This attitude is particularly fitting to Lorenzo’s situation, because oftentimes the evildoers he hopes to fight are Cheliaxan men and women just like him and he’d rather have them surrender instead of killing them. Of course, mercy has no place when a faithful is faced with irredeemable evil such as devils and traitors.

• « As the only major ascended deity who is female, the Inheritor has a unique perspective when it comes to a woman’s role in the world. She has abandoned none of her femininity in her pursuit of justice; she is not a masculine deity who happens to be a woman—she is a warrior woman, strong and supple like a tempered steel sword, able to bend without breaking. She doesn’t stand for old-fashioned deities like Erastil and Torag telling her what a woman’s role should be, nor does she let Cayden Cailean disrespect her like some common bar wench. Her church is a haven for women seeking freedom from oppression by men, whether slavemasters, pimps, or cruel husbands, and many of these have gone on to prove themselves warriors in their own rights or earn positions of influence in her church. » ― Since we have 2 women in our party, I think that Lorenzo could use these lines of inspiration to know how to deal with adventuring/fighting women such as Faustinia and Catina.Faithful of Iomedae in Cheliax usually have a high respect for women, especially those who are able to protect themselves.

• «Iomedae manifests in the form of mundane objects reshaping into sword-like forms, mysterious white or golden lights on a person or object, or a compass-like pull on a longsword or other long metal weapon. Common folk in need of a weapon to defend themselves may happen upon an old, rusty blade that still has the strength of a new weapon and grows shinier the more it is used in the name of justice and honor. » ― I think that adding one of these events, or something along that line, to Lorenzo’s backstory would help you in explaining how he really comes to be sure to be a servant of the Inheritor, chosen by the Goddess herself and justify Lorenzo’s calling.

• «Iomedae is associated with lions, horses, eagles, griffons, and hippogriffs. » ― As such, I believe that one of these animals would be a good fit for Lorenzo’s family heraldry.

• « Formal raiment is a white cassock with gold or yellow trim and matching mitre; most followers prefer these colors and wear them in their day-to-day garments. Pious adventurers usually wear a narrow chasuble in the goddess’s colors » ― These lines could serve as a good inspiration for describing Lorenzo’s clothing.

• «The church is organized into circles, each consisting of 10 to 50 priests or knights of similar ability, attitude, and rank. The leader of a circle is called a sword knight, and each sword knight is part of a higher-ranked circle reporting to a superior sword knight. The high priest or priestess is called the first sword knight of Iomedae; her circle is the first circle, comprised of 14 second sword knights, each of whom leads a second circle, and so on. There is much competition to join a circle led by a famous valorous sword knight and it is a mark of honor to be selected for such a knight’s circle. The sword knight ranks correspond to military ranks in standard armies (general, colonel, captain, and so on). » ― I suppose that Lorenzo needs to be familiar with the Inheritor’s church organization, although the Church of Iomedae in Cheliax is not so strong anymore. His ancestors might well have been sword knights or superior sword nights before Thrune rose to power.

• «The devout often create a shrine of stones on the site of any great battle fought in the name of Iomedae, sometimes capping it with a broken sword thrust into the top of the pile. A flat stone carved with the goddess’s symbol, the sculpture of a down-tuned sword or, in its simplest form, a hilt-like cross marks where the faithful buried their dead.» ― Interesting thing to do after defeating an enemy!

• « Priests must act honorably, show courage in battle, uphold righteous laws, and bring evildoers to justice. They must set a good example for common folk and especially children, both in appearance and attitude, and even the most battle-weary priest stands proud and tall in the presence of impressionable youths. Some refuse to enter a city if they are dirty, stopping by an outlying inn or home for wash-water. They take their responsibilities very seriously, and most conduct themselves like great knights.» ― More inspiration on how Lorenzo should behave. Mix this with the love for fashion that every Cheliaxan has on his own, and you get a fine and elegant knight as a result.

• «THE ACTS OF IOMEDAE: The holiest of Iomedaean writings are the Acts of Iomedae, usually called simply the Acts among her faithful. Each act recounts an episode of heroism performed by Iomedae during her life as a champion in the service of Aroden. Tales of valor and adventure, these stories serve as examples of Iomedaean virtues. While regional variations between the stories exist, all have the same general themes, with the goddess herself acknowledging that it is the lessons, not the particulars, that are important. » ― I believe that you should have at least passing familiarity with the Acts of Iomedae in order to really bring to life Lorenzo! Go ahead and read them yourself!

• « For Victory, for the Heart: Whether whispered as a prayer or shouted as a challenge, this saying refers to striking at the heart to make sure a foe is slain. Knights use it in battle, priests use it when baptizing a new acolyte, and farmers use it when cutting a tree stump. » ― A good aphorism Lorenzo should be using to add a little flavor.

Finally, I would suggest you to consider the Inheritor Prestige Class presented in the featured article I’ve focused on in this post and also the Iomedaean Sword Oath feat.

Iomedaean Sword Oath
By swearing to never use a weapon other than a longsword, you can achieve things normally limited to the most highly trained swordsmen.
Prerequisite: Proficient in longsword, Weapon Focus (longsword), base attack bonus +4, worshiper of Iomedae.
Benefit: You may select longsword-related feats as if you were a 4th-level fighter. For example, you may select Weapon Specialization (longsword) as a feat. Special: If you ever use a melee or ranged weapon other than a longsword in combat, you lose the benefits of this feat until you receive an atonement spell. You may still use spells that act as weapons (such as flame blade and spiritual weapon) without affecting your oath.

For the purposes of this feat, I wouldn’t consider your shield as a different weapon if you plan to attack with it; thus, attacking with your shield wouldn’t count as breaking your oath.

Thanks for the input. I had read that source but your takes provide further insight in to how to implement them.

I'm not sure about the Iomedaen Sword Oath because it cripples me if I ever have to use a ranged weapon. Unless you rule that if it's my only choice, then it's OK to use a ranged weapon.

I'll look at the prestige class later.

Game on!

Council of Thieves Maps

HOUSE DROVENGE

House Drovenge is an old, respected Chelish noble family that has weathered the death of Aroden and rise of House Thrune without substantial loss of prestige or position. The house is wealthy and conservative. Along with House Oberigo, it is one of the two most powerful noble houses of Westcrown. Even though it is a Chelish noble family, the majority of its members are of Taldan heritage.

What does Sev knows about Drovenges:
Ever since Sev was in the Drovenge family, Vassindio has always been the patriarch of the family. The Drovenges have always been an incredibly wealthy and conservative family of moneylenders and property owners, and weathered the fall of Aroden and the rise of the House of Thrune well. Yet that was called into question by Vassindio’s son, Sidonai. Arrogant and manipulative, the Drovenge scion was incensed upon the birth of his first offspring, a weak girl-child her mother named Chammady. Sidonai had wanted a son, you heard from your fellow servants, a “true heir” to usher in a new era of power and prosperity for his family. In the weeks following Chammady’s birth, Sidonai's wife got pregnant again. Nine months passed, but everyone in the vira noticed Sidonai's wife’s growing complications with her second pregnancy.

Then, when the baby came to light, something strange happened: the child's mother (Sidonai's wife) disappeared, and soon thereafter all of Sidonai’s house staff vanished as well. Many among Sev’s fellow house servants believe Sidonai’s wife and house staff were sent in Sargava, or in another Cheliaxan city to serve a distant cousin of the family, but whether these rumors are true is everyone’s guess.
A few months later, even Sidonai left Westcrown. No one knows where he currently is, at least among Sev's acquaintances.

Fortunately, Sev never worked for Sidonai. He has always been in service to Vassindio Drovenge, serving as a house servant for the family’s patriarch. Unfortunately, though, Sev had several friends among Sidonai’s house staff (many of whom were halflings just like him), and he was very disappointed when he found out that they disappeared without anyone noticing where precisely they went. The traumatic discovery may well be one of the reasons behind Sev’s choice to escape from Vassindio’s service.

As far as he could tell, Vassindio has always been a fair and respectable man. He never insulted nor dishonored his house servants, even though he rarely spoke to them at all, preferring his major to communicate with his house staff instead. Vassindio also freed some servants in the past, among those who served the Drovenges well during the course of several generations. Even though he demanded these freed servants to stay in Vaneo Drovenge for their whole lives, they were regularly paid and granted room and board.

Vassindio never spoke to Sev, except for a single circumstance. When Sev was a little boy, he played a childish prank resulting in one of the Drovenges’ precious minkaian vases getting destroyed. Vassindio asked to speak in private with the little halfling brat and calmly but sternly explained to him that the vase he just broke was worth more than 100 years of his service, more than he could ever hope to pay off in the future short of his whole life. Instead of punishing him, though, Vassindio spanked Sev for a whole hour, without being too violent. Then, he had him burned with the mark of infamy: a burning, ever-burning scar on his left arm witnessing his mistake forever. The mark has the form of a fiendish face, slightly warped and far from precise. After that, he was left alone and Sev continued his service without being further punished or insulted. He discovered that at least 2 more among Vassindio’s house servants shared his same mark, but he was never able to find out more about its true meaning, if there’s one at all apart from the physical pain it caused and the shame it causes in him upon looking at it.

Thank you GM, i'm busy today but with this info I should have Sev finished up tomorrow.

Okay, I think Sev is pretty much good to go, I was thinking that the AP probably starts not too long after he's escaped from his slave masters, let me know if there's anything in particular you want to see. Once you give me the OK i'll get his character sheet on the alias.

Council of Thieves Maps

LORENZO MANCINI

Yours is promising start, but I think that you should add a lot of details in order to complete Lorenzo’s background. The basic points are all there, but I hope that you’ll be willing to look further into them and consider them more closely. A few suggestions about what I would like you expand.

What are your relatives’ names? I need to know them in order to plan a few things ahead of time. I need at least the names of your father, your mother, your grandfather and your sisters.

How does Lorenzo currently live? You wrote that both your mother and father died, and your grandfather disappeared. You also wrote that your sister are still young, and Lorenzo works and fends for them. So, does Lorenzo lives with his sisters now? What his sisters do in the meantime? What is Lorenzo’s current lifestyle? Is he so poor? In this case, how did he acquire his weapons and armor?

How did Lorenzo come to worship Iomedae? This is a very important point, I believe, since is going to determine your motivations for belonging to your class. I didn’t find any detail about this in your background. I would suggest to describe a crucial event in Lorenzo’s life in which he receives his divine calling. Perhaps he has always been in line with Iomedae’s tenets, but he really understood why he was so rightful, honest and prone to get himself into trouble to defend justice in a harsh country such as Cheliax only when he discovered his family book in which there were the names and deeds of his glorious ancestors, many of whom perhaps were part of Iomedae’s church. Perhaps some of them even fought to Iomedae’s side when she was still a mortal. After discovering this truth, Lorenzo may have come to think that his natural predisposition toward Iomedae’s teachings was not a mere coincidence, but the result of his blood, suddenly much more noble than he though before discovering the family book. You can also add another personal experience to justify his calling.

How does Lorenzo discover his glorious legacy? You mention that Oleg, the dwarven craftsman Lorenzo works for, has told him tales about his ancestors. I found it to be unlikely, or at least a little too trivial for such an important thing. I suggest that you make clear that Lorenzo discovers his noble legacy through the family book and then asks Oleg to confirm what he’s found inside. The dwarf, who was probably already there when Lorenzo’s family was at its apex, was then able to confirm this and tell Lorenzo a few mundane tales about the Mancinis.

The discover of the family book I think that you didn’t give the proper importance to this event. You said that Lorenzo’s search for old texts landed him a copy of The Acts of Iomedae. Well, this is an unlikely event. Searching for old text is very dangerous in Cheliax, and I think that most of the holy texts of religions other than Asmodeus and perhaps Shelyn are actually very rare to acquire. So we must justify in an uncommon way. Maybe one day, upon returning to his home after performing a particularly good action (your choice, it would be best if you could invent one event and describe it) Lorenzo found on his bedside table his family book along with a copy of the Acts of Iomedae. He was not able to ascertain who placed those books there, but after reading his family book it became clear what was the connection with the holy text suggested by whoever placed those books on his bedside table.

Adding details to your equipment I see you’ve opted for a quick and essential equipment for Lorenzo, but I find that several important things are missing, along with accessories that really help to bring a character’s equipment to life. First off, I see Lorenzo is lacking a holy symbol. Is this a deliberate choice? Should be it, it’s fine for me, since carrying a holy symbol of Iomedae would be dangerous and draw the wrong attentions to him. Besides, I don’t see obtaining a holy symbol of Iomedae being so easy in Westcrown, so I’m fine if you don’t have one.
Anyway, I would add a little more detail to Lorenzo’s equipment in general: I would suggest giving him a good adventuring gear, perhaps even some special substances and items. He also needs an outfit (remember that you obtain an outfit worth no more than 10 gp for free at character creation).

Improving the character’s sheet I noticed several sections missing from your character’s sheet (carrying capacity, current load, etc.) Please add them in order to finalize Lorenzo’s sheet. Also, if you could indicate where the bonuses he has to his saves come from, it would be best.

Justifying your traits I really want to see something brilliant here. The traits you’ve chosen are full of possible justifications. Why would you define Lorenzo a conspiracy hunter? Starting from the trait’s description, why do you think he’s suited to take that trait? How would you justify it? Also, what has made Lorenzo being a deft dodger?

I think this is all. Work on these suggestions and enrich your character. Let me know when you’re ready for the next revision.

---

Next up is Sev’s revision: I will do it tomorrow, most likely.

I'll work on these in the next couple of days.

One thing I would like to keep is how he found out about his family and keeping that initial bit of information coming from Oleg. later that prompts him to seek out his family's book and ask more questions from Oleg.

I'll provide further comments later.

Hi all, just a message to let you know that I'm still here. I've been tweaking Catina's background and such. Still to write are some diary entries for her past, and for Lorenzo the next episode of their encounter.

I have some things I'd like some suggestions on:
- Where would Catina live? In residence at the temple of Shelyn, or in a very modest room somewhere?
- Would Catina have a job, or would being/studying for priest be a full-time commitment? Would the temple provide income for their acolytes?
- If Catina has a job, what would be suitable? My first thought was laundry, but I think those wealthy enough to have their laundry done would have in-house servants to do it. Which isn't something I see working for Catina, being a Tiefling and all.

Thoughts?

Please bot me as necessary if we do start the campaign.

I'll work on Lorenzo some later today.

I think Catina needs a little touching up (like the questions I asked a couple of posts back). Otherwise, I'm good to go. Like Lorenzo, though, my holiday is coming up. I'll be out of the country between June 15th and June 30th. I'll be taking my laptop and should be able to post morning and evening (assuming we have decent WiFi at the B&B's. LORENZO MANCINI...

Here are my comments...

RELATIVES NAMES
Grandfather: Tobias Mancini
Father: Vicenzo Mancini
Mother: Marcia Mancini
'Middle sister': 12 years old Sara
'Younger sister': 7 years old Giovanna

CURRENT HOME
Lorenzo lives with his sister in a poor part of town, not quite a slum but in a place where most hand-laborers live in.

IOMEDAE WORSHIP
Lorenzo had his calling after finding a copy of the Acts of Iomedae. he does not know where the book came from but it was given to his younger sister by an 'older lady'. He read the book several times and started a self-taught worship of the lady. He yearns for some formal instruction.

DISCOVERY OF LEGACY
Together with the Acts of Iomedae was left a copy that details his past family members, what their lives were like, and their accomplishments. There he learned of his family's legacy and that some ancestors had fought for the Lady in the past, some even side-by-side.

FAMILY BOOK
See above. I'll leave it unknown who gave it to him so you can tie that to the campaign.

EQUIPMENT DETAILS
His longsword is Iomedae's holy symbol. I've added additional details to his equipment in general.

CHARACTER SHEET
Improvement were made.

TRAITS
Deft dodger: his natural dexterity couple with his physical labor have honed his body in different ways; being able to dodge things easily is one of them.

Conspiracy hunter: The fact that he has discovered his family's legacy lead him to believe that there were more things hidden in Cheliax. His yearning for Cheliax to be as glorious as it was in the pre-Thrune era has led him to seek out information.

Since I don't want to start the campaign while some of the players are away on vacation, I think we should delay the starting date. I don't want to lose the precious momentum gained through the start of a new campaign. I would of course suggest you to finalize your characters in the meantime, so that as soon as everyone will be back, we'll be able to start the game!

Council of Thieves Maps

Ok guys, so I decided to start the campaign on July the 1st. Please be sure to work on your characters in the meantime so that they're ready to start on the beginning of July.

Faustinia is complete, as far as I can see.
Also, Lorenzo only needs to integrate some more info in his background.
Sev only needs to put up a complete character sheet.
Catina still needs a review, something I'm going to do in the next few days.

Alright guys, I took some time to review all your characters once again and I think we're ready to start now. You only need finishing touches in order to complete your PCs. I'm very excited to start! I'll close this thread as soon as everyone answers to this post.

A few notes on your characters.

Catina: Excellent job on the diary. Had a good time reading it. Only a last suggestion: in the future, you could plan to put some ranks in Perform in order to justify your background and also have some boons later on.

Faustinia: Everything is perfect, you're ready to go.

Lorenzo: I reviewed the info you posted above, and I only need you to put them into your alias. The last thing I want you to do is to try and integrate those suggestion I gave you on Iomeadae's worship in your alias.

Sev: I read your background once again and find that nothing is missing now. Also, good work on the personality section. I only need you to complete your equipment: as it is now, it is a bit too meagre.

A few notes on your characters.

Lorenzo: I reviewed the info you posted above, and I only need you to put them into your alias. The last thing I want you to do is to try and integrate those suggestion I gave you on Iomeadae's worship in your alias.

I already incorporated them into the alias as 'additional info'. I'll try and weave them into the story this weekend.

About Iomedae's worship, was there something else you wanted me to integrate other than...
Lorenzo had his calling after finding a copy of the Acts of Iomedae. He does not know where the book came from but it was given to his younger sister by an 'older lady'. He read the book several times and started a self-taught worship of the lady. He yearns for some formal instruction.

Did you want me to formally worship in a church? I thought you said that we would meet an NPC that could be Lorenzo's 'formal instructor' in Iomedae's faith?

Thanks, Giuseppe. Good to read that everything is in order. I'll do a double check on the stat line before we start. I'm excited to get started as well. Two questions, still: do you have any suggestions on housing/job, as I discussed some posts back? And will I need to detail a mentor at the church of Shelyn?

Lorenzo, do you want to continue the story of our meeting? If so, I think you're up for the next installment?

@Giuseppe: I incorporated the additional info to Lorenzo's profile. I think I'm done unless you tell me otherwise.

Lorenzo and Catina 4:

Lorenzo immediately took away his hand from her shoulder as he saw the dust and grime.

"I'm sorry about my dirty hands. And my boss. He's... he's all business and his client is very demanding."

He watched Oleg go away and put down his tools. "It's time I take a break anyway. Too hot today." He wiped sweat from his brow and neared a bucket of water on a low stool. He dipped a ladle, pulled it full of water, and rinsed his mouth. After taking a couple of drinks, he asked, "Would you mind pouring some water on my hands?"

He then asked, "So what do you here? Are you an opera performer?"

Sorry for the delay, Lorenzo. Haven't had a lot of time for writing on holiday, even though this only required a short post. I've written an end to our encounter since we'll be starting the campaign proper before too long. Also left it 'unresolved', so we have something to pick up during the campaign. Hope you like it. :)

Lorenzo and Catina, part 5:

Anyway, he stopped me from leaving and asked me to wash his hands. I didn't think too much of it at the time. I don't think he's even aware of it, but he has a certain way of acting that just makes it really easy to follow along with what he's saying, like it's all so reasonable. So I crouched next to the water Basin and started pouring water over his dusty hands. It wasn't until I was walking back that I started thinking: isn't it something religious to wash people's hands? And feet, perhaps? Or is it something servants do? I'm not sure, and he probably didn't mean it like that.
He did have me wondering, though, when we asked me if I was in the opera. I couldn't help myself and hit angry, even tipping over the pitcher of water. I made a complete fool out of myself as well, asking whether he was taking the piss, and pointing at my horns, loudly arguing that I couldn't well be in the opera looking like that! I got quite mad at him - which isn't fair, because it wasn't really him I was mad at. Anyway, I stormed off before he could see me busting out in tears. I should go back and apologize to him while he's still working there, but I probably won't dare to go back there for some days.

I'm good with leaving things as is but a very confused Lorenzo will have some questions next time we meet.

One question, how long before campaign starts do you think this happened? A couple of weeks?

I thought he might. :)

As for timing, I though about a duration in weeks as well. Whatever works for the story, I'd say. One week gives Catina a somewhat reasonable excuse that she would have gone back to apologize, but had just been busy. If we set it a couple of weeks ago, that would show that excuse is as flimsy as it sounds...
