Theriandas |

"I knew a young fellow called Grima
Who was known for producing ripe steamers
The townsfolk who smelled him
Made haste and expelled him,
That cunning (and flatulent) schemer"
Theriandas scribbles down his composition hastily.
"Maybe if we hang around for long enough, we'll get ambushed by nymphs..."

Sturk the Axe |

"The Juice of my dirk is about to be your blood funny guy."
rasps Sturk turning to glower at the human. He knows that once the teasing begins, the bullying is not far behind and he will not tolerate it.
He appears taught and the grip on his axe turns his knuckles white...

Sturk the Axe |

"He was too far away to hit with my axe otherwise... Not used to trucking thru brush though. Slowed me down. Made me miss.
He turns to look where Blacky was fighting from, then at the other party members, "Not used to having back-up though. I'm open to suggestions."
tension seems to drain out of the stunted half-orc and he releases his two handed grip on his axe and straightens from his combat crouch.

Festric Copperscale |

it was in italics to indicate it was a thought, but sure we'll play along with it being said aloud
Seeing the calm return to Sturk's face, Festric takes a moment to right the wrong he did.
Having an enraged half-orc mad at you isn't wise
"I apologize Sturk. It was a joke. I meant no offense. I'm not your enemy. By the way, that cloak really suits you."

Theriandas |

"If it falls to me to defend the honour of our half-orc..."
" A spell-slinger, first name Festric
Ensorcelled the end of his prick
It glowed in the dark
Gave off showers of sparks
And sang hymns, if you gave it a lick"
Seeing the look on his companions' faces, Theriandas holds his hands up. "OK - I'll be quiet. Quieter. Ever tried throwing that axe, Sturk?"

Daven Treadwell |

All this time walking with nothing to smite, I'm starting to get b-, Desmond is thinking to himself when he suddenly feels a chill run up his spine.
Perception - 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
"Careful now mates," he says quietly. I don't think we're alone in these woods."

Sturk the Axe |

oops I was under the impression that italics in that case was for lyrics :( sorry Sorry also that this is late...
Before the bad thing happens, Sturk attempts to make amends "My apologies Festric. I have not had but ill jokes directed at me. In the street, teasing and jokes led, almost as night follows day, to bullying and fights. To let someone make fun of you or a joke about you, and then let it go without reply, is a sign of weakness."
Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
"If I throw it then it'll be gone. Then I'm just standing there looking the fool. I did find this sling not so long ago tho..." He pulls out a familiar looking sling and it's apparent that he has no idea how to use it. Yet.

Something huge and black slams down on the ground where Darien was just the second before. As It's intended prey had just rolled out of It's clutches, the giant spider shoots something green out of It's mouth, yet Theriandras ducks it, and the glob splatters against a nearby tree. It burns right through the middle of the trunk.
Theriandas, make another Reflex save.
The initiative order goes:
Darien
Theriandas
Daven
Giant Spider (Lg size category)
Sturk
Festric
Don't post anything until I do. I'm trying to find a way to show you guys what I see. I use D&D minis on a grid and pennies to show difficult terrain. If it's a bust, i'll continue to use A7, B6, ect. If it works it'll make our lives a lot easier, not having to look closely at grid paper to find out what you want to do. Thanks for waiting, assuming you do.

Darien
Theriandas

Sturk
Festric
Unless there's some factor I'm not taking into account (or perhaps you just rolled initiative for us?) the order of battle should be:
Darien - rolled 25
Daven - rolled 21
Spider
Sturk - rolled 10
Theriandas - rolled 5
Festric - rolled 4

Sturk the Axe |

I think he looked at the reflex save for Theri instead of the Init roll. Honest mistake :)
"What the street tarts teets is that Thing?!" yells Sturk as he hefts his axe into a two handed grip again and readies to charge.

Thanks Daven. You're right. I couldn't get the pictures to work for me, so we'll have to continue going A5, ect. until I find an alternative.
Difficult terrain on A1, A2, B1 B2, all the way down. Also G1, G2, all the way down. The tree the Spider shot with the green glob is on D9.The tree gives off a loud crack, and falls, right on the Elf. Theriandas falls prone, taking 8 damage. Someone else needs to make a Strength check to lift the tree enough for him to get out, or he will be stuck. The tree now fills spaces D6, D7, D8, and D9 as difficult terrain. If you step on Theri's square (D7), he will take damage.
The Spider is on squares D3, D4, E3, and E4.
I started you off as follows: Festric: C2, Darien: C3, Sturk: C5, and Daven: F2.

Daven Treadwell |

Assuming he can make it there, Daven will move to D6 and attempt to extricate Theriandas.
"Cover me men, I'm gonna bail out the songbird!" Daven shouts before pelting down the path toward their fallen comrade. Once he arrives at the toppled tree he finds the bard's inert from crumpled beneath. Daven immediately begins wrenching on the heavy trunk.
Strength check - 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
"I dont think I'm strong enough lads! Someone's got to gimme a hand!"

Festric Copperscale |

Festric's hands shimmer with a copper shine as his hands suddenly morph into claws and he charges forward attempting to claw the spider.
It's a primary natural attack so I get full attack bonus and don't provoke AoO. If I take a full attack action I get two claw attacks. Not sure if I can charge and get two attacks though
First attack
To Hit 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 2 = 24 Damage 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Crit confirm 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 + 2 = 15
Second attack (if applicable)
To Hit 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 2 = 16 Damage 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Darien Coldwater |

@DM: Is this the same day as the previous combat?
With his adrenaline pumping after the close call, Darien leaps behind the beast and attempts to punch it. "Sturk, trying to help you, move right!"
5-foot step to D2, improved unarmed strike 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 dealing 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 if it hits
Edit: Um, we're not using critical fumble rules, are we? I'd hate to have my fist fall off mid-combat... :)

The spider seems to take no notice of Darien's weak attack.
Now for the AoO on Daven.
AoO: 1d20 (17) + 3 = 20
Damage: 1d6 (1) + 3 = 4
Make a Fortitude save (DC 13) to avoid being slowed.
House Rule: If you are hit by an attack of opportunity while moving, unless it's a charge, you may finish the move action.
House Rule: No critical fumble rules. If you roll a one, you just miss your attack.
Yes, this is the same day as the previous combat. It is about 5:00 in the evening.
The spider lunges at the half-orc in front of it.
Attack: 1d20 (9) + 3 = 12
It's bite is put in check though, by Sturk's mighty axe blade.
Next up is Sturk, then Theriandas (Who I just found out is staggered and really can't do much in his current predicament.), then Festric (Who's attack just hit, though i'm not recording it out of order, which is why I didn't list it as something that happened already.)

Sorry, but you'll just have to keep matching the lines up to get a good grid working. This is the best thing I can do for us right now.

Sturk the Axe |

Sturk moves to the indicated location and crashes his Greataxe down into the flanked Spider's multi-eyed head.
to hit: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 Flank bonus added and Cripples the creature for damage 1d12 + 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (8) + (2) + 2 = 12

Daven Treadwell |

i think thats everyone except Theri who's f'ed anyway, so I'll go ahead to the next round.
Unable to move the massive tree without assistance, Daven focuses his attention on their eight-legged adversary, unleashing two arrows in its direction.
Attack - 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 181d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Damage - 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 91d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

Darien Coldwater |

Darien curses under his breath about "stupid giant bugs" and "lucky tactical advantages" while staying in position and pulling his morningstar. He attempts to bash the spider 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 dealing 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 if it connects.

Daven feels his body slowing down. He now is slowed for the time being. No saving throws can be made right now. Sturk retaliates against the large creature, but it avoids his deadly swing. Theriandas can do nothing at the moment. Festric's claws rake horribly down the spider's side. Both attacks hit and the critical hit is confirmed.
Darien swings his morningstar in a powerful ark, hitting and further wounding the spider. Daven's first arrow connects, though the second isn't even needed as the spider dies on impact with the first.

Darien Coldwater |

Not sure if we're still in combat rounds or not, but here is what Darien would try to accomplish as quickly as possible.
Darien hurries over to help get the tree off Theriandas (Strength check to assist 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17, repeat as needed). Immediately after the Theri is out, he'll get a Cure Minor just to make sure he's stable.
Assuming the spider bite was venomous, Darien will then move to Daven and help treat his injury and any poison effects using Heal checks (d20+8 as needed).

Sturk the Axe |

Sturk also lends his meager strength to freeing Theri. 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
"Up and at 'em Theri. Thank King Grimsby's beard that no one was hit by that creature's spittle. It ate through that tree. Does anyone have a flask or vial we could capture some in? That would work wonders on a certain storehouse lock I know of..."
Sturk looks contemplative for a moment and smiles to himself. On the diminutive half-orc's face, it's not a pleasant look.
"Right then. On we go?"

![]() |

Darien's check was enough to lift the tree just enough for Theriandas to squirm out of his self-made ditch. We are not in combat rounds anymore. How much does Darien heal Theri by? Also the spider's bite was not venomous, though the slowed condition still applies to Daven for the present.

Darien would just give him 1 point initially to stablize him, then toss a CLW to him 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 after he examines Daven.

Festric Copperscale |

hmm isn't there some part of giant spiders valuable for spell reagents or magic item creation...if the pieces are still intact...
Knowledge(Arcana) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Festric gets out a magnifying glass and starts inspecting the spider corpse.
Appraise 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 6 + 2 = 20

You identify the green substance as acid well enough, and located the gland towards the back of it's body that produces the stuff (all from the appraise check).
If you coated a weapon in the acid, it would make it much deadlier (dealing acid damage), but there is very little in the spider's body because when it died the gland stopped working. And the fact that it had already tried to hit Theri with a good amount of the stuff does come into effect (Knowledge Arcana check).
