CELESTIAL SUMMONS - GM Angelina's Campaign

You've always felt special, like you have some sort of a higher calling.
Well, now, either you've gone completely insane, or you've been proven correct.
You've dreamed of a woman summoning you to the cause of good... or, at least, strongly considering it.

SPECIAL: Your character has celestial blood. Your character should either be an aasimar (of any class) or a celestial bloodline sorcerer (of any race) or have some other strong racial or inherent celestial connection (with approval).

ADDITIONAL CHARACTER CREATION GUIDELINES:
Pathfinder rules, Paizo-only material, unless otherwise approved
Home-brew setting, so don't make any specific deity assumptions, except that good divinity does exist
25 point buy
Any Good Alignment
Max HP
2 traits
2 extra additional skill-points per level (that must go to craft, profession, or perform skills)
Starting at 2nd level
1,000 gp worth of equipment
Piece-meal armor rules allowed
Partial wands allowed
No custom-crafted magic items allowed before game starts

IMPORTANT NOTE:
This PBP game will have regular GM game updates on Saturdays. Each player is expected to post at some point each week in between each game update.
(Posting more than once a week is fine, and may lead to fun character RP, but is not required. This GM will be pretty busy between weekends.)
Although we are playing with Pathfinder rules, some aspects of the game will be rules-light, and story/character interaction will be emphasized more than combat.
Level-up will occur at the speed of plot, which may be quite slow.

HOW TO START:
If you're interested in the game, prepare an alias with your desired character profile, and post here under that alias, with an in-character response to the questions, "So, why should I choose you? What have you done with your life so far? What talents can you bring to the cause of good? And, most of all, how do I know I can trust you with this mission?" You dreamed a woman asked you these questions, and something about her made you want her to choose you.
I'll be choosing players from among the submissions next Friday evening or Saturday morning, and starting gameplay that day as well. :)

Dot.

EDIT: I'm thinking of making an aasimar tranquil guardian or bloodrager instead. If I go with bloodrager, can I take the Controlled Rage alternate class ability instead? I understand that I would still not be able to cast spells in that state.

I'm thinking of being a peri- or azata-blooded aasimar and reflavoring the rage as ecstasy, joy, or a surge of primal exultation instead of fury.

Hmn. Restrictive, but interesting.

Here's some ideas that I came up with for exploring interesting things along this concept.

Throwing this out there for the GM to approve or disapprove, and for people to maybe get some ideas!

---- lowering ---

BLOODLINE/HERITAGE CLASSES
Sorcerer: Celestial Bloodline <and/or Empyreal archetype>
Arcanist: Blood arcanist (as sorcerer); White Mage
Bloodrager: Celestial Bloodline
Oracle: Purifier (aasimar), Reincarnated (samsaran)
Paladin: Tranquil Guardian (aasimar)

------------------------------------

CELESTIAL THEME CLASSES (not actually bloodline related; shakier ground)
Bard: bardic masterpieces (heavenly/celestial/good/etc)
Cleric: good domains (and celestial-kind subdomains); glory, healing, nobility [subdomains]
Paladin: empyreal knight archetype; redeemer (half-orc), stonelord (dwarf)
Sanctified Rogue: ??

------------------------------------

CELESTIAL RACES

Aasimar: descendants of angels
- standard
- agathion
- angel
- archon
- azata
- garuda
- peri
- variant (abilities and physical features)
(racial feats):
== angel wings
== angelic blood
== angelic flesh
== blinding light
== celestial servant
== channel force [~, greater, improved]
== consecrate spell
== heavenly radiance
== inner light
== metallic wings
== revered guardian
== supernal feast

Samsaran: eternally reincarnated spirits (think: former aasimars eternally reincarnating; or celestial spirits taking mortal forms)
- standard
- mystic past life
(racial feats):
== life's blood

Tac,
An aasimar bloodrager with the controlled rage ability would be fine.

All the other ideas you proposed above are interesting, too, and might be approved on a case-by-case basis, as other potential players ask me about them. :)

Currently considering an Aasimar Purifier Oracle. Hopefully this would be useful in a celestial campaign.

Aasimar purifier oracle sounds good, Ginga!

I'm thinking that an Angel-blooded Aasimar Magus (Eldritch Scion) could be really neat. I might go for the Destined bloodline, too, but I have to look in to that kind of thing.

An angel-blooded aasimar eldritch scion magus sounds like it would work well, Seranov.

Quick demonstration of "Arabeth' an Aasimar "Oracle of life" healer.

Plume-kith Aasimar.

Will make adjustments/new character etc when time is permitting.

Much cheers and best wishes to all. (^_^)

Edit: Because the DM's title heading makes me feel like sharing something that I find similarly inspirational. Learning to fly...

Reading the opening post, my first thought was Celestial Bloodrager, dang you, Tacticslion! =)

Definitely dotting for interest, will kick around a couple ideas.

Hmmn. An Azata-Blood Aasimar Shaman, who sees beyond the needs of the flesh, and tries to heal the needs of the spirit. A wiser, older aasimar, who has relied on Lore to guide him. He has seen many things in his years, and is always willing to lend a hand, no matter how small - or large - the problem.

You could always make more than one character concept! If yours is good enough, perhaps I'll do something else! Or, we could have two bloodragers! :D

Well, here is my barebones concept:

Changeling Bloodrager
Mother: Hag, obviously...
Father: Half-orc Paladin(?)(some sort of holy warrior)

Mother, seeing the goodness of the Paladin, wants to devour him. Using her considerable wiles, seduces him, conceives a child, kills the father, dumps the baby on someone's door(as hags do).

The child grows up, but when she "hears the call", she hears 2, one evil, one good, and has to choose. Chooses good, result=Celestial Bloodrager Primalist.

Two blood-ragers? All of these angry people are going to need someone to calm them down! ;)

Hi there GM Angelina, Tacticslion, Suthuri here, aka Shaedo! (~_^)

I have a concept in mind for Kayahidye, an azata or maybe an agathion blooded aasimar Monk of the Lotus, with Touch of Serenity!

Stats so far...:

Name: Kayahidye (Lost Gift)
Race: Aasimar (azata, agation blooded??)

For back-story, I'm thinking she was a foundling at a monastery somewhere, brought in and raised as a monk. In some ways, she found the practices of the monk intuitive, easy. In others, (especially if she is azata blooded), she found the discipline of the monastic life very challenging.

It has taken, by human standards, nearly a life time to master the meditative arts. However, she has achieved inner peace, at such an advanced level that she can share this inner peace with others, even those openly hostile toward her.

I like the idea of Kaya having chaos in her blood, and so having to reconcile any mischievousness in her spirit with the monk's discipline. In this way, although lawful in alignment, she would be sympathetic to those of all good alignments.

On the other-hand, the agathion would be a no-brainer on account of... nrivana! (Could have her look like a cat-folk too, for extra fun!) Either way, this looks like a class-race combination that would be really fun to try!

Sound good? Thoughts? (^_^)

Ooh, this sounds neat. Dotting for future submission. I'm thinking a musetouched aasimar sorceress, with the Harrow bloodline from the Harrow Handbook, and maybe go for the Harrower prestige class. It's all in the cards!

Hmmm. Dot, but I think you're gonna get a lot of people apping. :)

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Dotting.

Thinking of doing a Scion of Humanity aasimar who's had a rough life in his attempts to do good. Driven by some desire to do good in the world, and yet his efforts have been dashed at every turn. Possibly unaware of his celestial nature, too - at least until he's finally heard the call.

Leaning towards a bard at the moment, though I've also been wanting to try one of the ACG classes.

Just letting the DM know that it will be another 12 or so hours before I can upload a more 'specific' version of Arabeth suitable to their campaigns specifications. (^_^)

Much cheers to all.

Dotting, and potentially interested. Really interested in finding some way to take advantage of the craft/perform thing, so maybe a bard or martial character with a focus on item craftsmanship.

What if, instead of an humanoid, could I play with a monster?
Something like starting as a Archon Lantern who rises in power during the campaign, obviously with much less class level.
So?

Dark Archive

Bah. So I threw together the Eldritch Scion and I am distinctly underwhelmed by what it can do at low levels.

I think I'll switch to a Slayer of some sort, instead.

Hello Tac and Ladydove

First off I must say I am sorry for lulu leaving, I was really getting frustrated at myself and my lack of really understanding what was happening.

in any event are you using firearms? I have this concept for a paladin (holy gun)

Hey, Edward. It's understandable. I think the only specific limitation is an angelic (well, celestial) bloodline of some sort, but you'd need approval to be certain. You could always write up a concept, and find out!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I do enjoy some angelic stuff, as anyone who's seem my character Camiel may know... XD

So, with that in mind, a few questions! Are 1001 Spells (Rite Publishing) and Deep Magic (Kobold Press) acceptable as source materials? There's some fairly good stuff in those (like Celestial Fanfare), and they seem like they might be thematically appropriate here. XD

I, for one, have no idea who you may be talking about. :P (Okay, maybe I do. A bit.)

(I think, however, you might need to provide specific materials for the GM to review: I know she doesn't have those specific materials available.)

Sunset, with a few adjustments to fit this campaign, I think Arabeth the aasimar oracle will work quite well. As long as you can update her profile by Friday evening, and post here in character answering the dream questions, you're good. (Also, thanks for sharing the song!)

Niteflier, the older, wiser aasimar shaman sounds good. He could be kind of a mentor type. Just make sure you have in mind a reason or story for why he's only a 2nd level character if he's lived so long.

Slyness, I really like your changeling bloodrager with a celestial bloodline concept. Torn between two callings, but making a good choice... Go for it! (I don't mind having two bloodragers, as long as they're different, interesting characters.)

Suthuri, your serene aasimar monk sounds good. Either of those types of aasimar would be interesting, and you could definitely give her a catfolk look, if that would be fun for you. :)

KBoom, a musetouched aasimar sorceress with the Harrow bloodline could definitely be interesting! We may not get too high up in levels, but I'd be very curious to see what you do with her.

Helio, I like the idea of a Scion of Humanity aasimar who doesn't realize he's an aasimar until this campaign. Bard or ACG class sounds fine.

Thunderbeard, either a bard or a martial crafter sounds fine. Post again when you have a more well-developed idea. (And, I don't mind having two bards if they are both different, interesting characters.)

ElMustacho, hmmm... Although it's a cool idea, I think I'm going to have to say no to playing a lantern archon. Sorry! The idea with this story is that you're (relatively) normal people living (relatively) normal humanoid or aasimar lives until you hear the call and discover something particular about your celestial heritage. Starting as an archon doesn't work well for the story. Please feel free to submit another idea, though!

Seranov, switching is no problem, just let me know what kind of slayer you have in mind.

Edward, an aasimar holy gun paladin would be cool. Firearms wouldn't be common in the setting, but we can say that a few groups have developed them. It might be hard to find weapon upgrades or spare parts, though, unless you take something like craft gunsmithing for yourself.

Rednal, I'm unfamiliar with those sourcebooks, but if you have specific spells you'd like to include from non-paizo material, then I would ask that you put a Spells-Description section under a spoiler tag in your character profile giving the details of any non-paizo spell you would have as a spell known or that you plan on preparing. I will likely approve of any such spells (as long as they're not obviously unbalanced), but I do reserve the right to veto any particular non-paizo spell if I don't think it will fit this game, in which case, you'd just have to choose a different spell to replace it. Fair enough? Let me know what kind of caster character you're considering.

TO ALL:
So, it seems there's a lot of interest in this game. Nice. :)
We have about a dozen people with possible character ideas so far, and a couple more dotting in for interest.
Although I don't want it to get too crazy, I think I can handle up to a dozen or so characters, if that many people are willing to commit, so I don't want to close recruitment yet.
We'll see who manages to get their alias profiles ready by Friday evening, and who comes up with satisfactory in-character posted responses to the dream questions.
Good luck, and may the best celestial characters win! :)

*Squeees* (^_^)

*Grabs Aasimar freind and drags them off to get ready*

Helio here, presenting Marius the Hunter. Couldn't resist trying an ACG class, I've been missing all the fun everyone else has been having!

I think everything's in order, but aasimar's have so many options I'm almost certain I mucked something up in there.

I also tied the questions into my backstory, but I'll copy it here for ease of access.

Questions:

Perhaps he'd never live up to the destiny he imagined.

Or at least, that's what he'd thought.

At last, the dreams spoke back. "So, why should I choose you?” she'd asked. A simple question, and yet so difficult to answer. Why should he be chosen?

“What have you done with your life so far? What talents can you bring to the cause of good?” The woman was beautiful, more beautiful than any he'd ever met in his life. If the angels were real, she must have been one, he thought. Where else could such beauty originate?

“And, most of all, how do I know I can trust you with this mission?"

He woke with the last question on his lips, sweat on his brow, and Rex at his side. He couldn't even recall falling asleep. It was raining; of course it was. Marius placed a hand on Rex and gently pet the wolf. For all of the beast's wild tendencies, he'd become like a puppy in Marius's arms.

“Because I deserve a chance,” he told Rex. The wolf looked at him perplexedly, then lay his head back down. “I've tried, and I've tried, and I've tried,” Marius continued. “The world is a bitter and dark place, a place that laughs at goodness, chews it up, and spits it out. And I'm determined to set that right. I won't rest until I do.”

Marius laughed to himself, knowing how silly it was to tell Rex about this. The dream was probably nothing, just a delusion of his own creation. He continued regardless. There was something cathartic about vindicating everything he'd been doing for the last few years.

“Because goodness doesn't mean a man is weak. It's a strength, the resolve to take the hard road in a world of crappy choices. A man that ventures into the wilderness and doesn't just take, but gives. He understands the world is easier when you forget your common man – and even easier when you forget your worldly kin.” He glanced at Rex, who seemed none the wiser of Marius's monologue. Enjoying the petting, though. “How can anyone trust a man who lets others – beast or man – suffer for his own profit? A man – a good man – cannot sit idly by.”

“What do I bring? I bring the balance of man and beast. A balance with the natural world that mankind forgot so long ago. I bring my blade, my bow, my skills, and,” he chuckled as he ruffled Rex's fur. “My friend.”

Marius sighed, leaning back against the thick fir tree he'd been taking shelter beneath. Few drops made it through the thick branches, but he gazed up and let the water run down his face. “So you ask what I have done. The answer, of course, is nothing.” He laughed, staring up into the sky beyond the canopy. If that woman was real, he knew she'd be laughing too.

“Not yet.”

IC:
The young woman, red hair barely held in check by her colorful scarves, let's the golden haired woman into her incense filled tent, seating herself opposite the woman with a harrow mat in between, "Let me ask you what you wish to know. Love life? Perhaps the fate of a loved one? Some even come to me to find lost things. What shall I read for you?"

She listens as the fair-skinned woman asks her questions, and taps her chin thoughtfully, "Perhaps the cards can answer your questions..." She then lays out nine cards, face down. Dawn turns over the first row of cards, sighing and shaking her head as she finally turned over the Betrayer, "In the dismal past, there was incarnate selfishness. Envy twisted the spirit and led ultimately to devastation. The Betrayer may have been a person whose loveliness hid an evil heart. This person caused much suffering, and there are those who still suffer to this day from the twisted envy for that which could not be had faithfully."

Dawn smiles as the next card is turned over, the Idiot, but continues to turn over the next row, "The Idiot is a card of grave foolishness and greed, but you can see here that it is misaligned. Here, the Idiot shows us that one is feigning idiocy to disguise one's true gifts. There is a crafty warrior of great skill who hides his abilities so that those opposed to his kindness and prowess cannot descend upon him before it is too soon. There is hope for us yet."

Turning over the next row, she taps the Demon's Lantern card, "The card of traps and tricks, sleight of hand and sleight of mind. You see the will-o'-wisps? The man here sought their light and reached an impossible or intractable situation. Beware of trickery before you, for one hand may hold fortunes and promises, but the other may hold your doom. Be certain of your situation before you step forward, and ever aware of your surroundings."

"Does this answer your questions? Your eyes tell me no. But the cards, they do not lie. I can help you, for I see not just the past," she says, tapping the Betrayer and then touching the Idiot and the Demon's Lantern in turn. "I see the present and the future, as well. It is true that the veils of time are murky, but it takes a clever eye to read into what the cards have to tell us. I have the ability to see what they have to say, though the translation may still be very open to whoever may listen."

She looks at the fair haired woman, "I have been reading the cards most of my life. This I offer to you. This I offer to the cause of what is right. To prevent the darkness that comes. That is what I hope for."

Slowly, she opens her eyes, still saddled on Buttercup, her horse. She smiles sadly to herself as she starts her horse forward on the road again.

What an odd time to be dreaming! And an even odder dream. It felt so... real!

GM I sent ya a PM to explain my idea and if its worth the time to submit or come up with something different.

Dark Archive

Gonna go with a bog-standard Slayer. The archetypes don't really do anything that I would want to give up the baseline class' features for.

Also, guys, I made some really nice piecemeal armors if you'd like to use some of those templates. :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Marius and Dawn are both great character submissions!
Nice job putting together both crunch and flavor. :)

A favor I'm requesting: Since it would be hard for me to double-check the full crunch for twelve or more submissions, I'm going to ask that each player submitting a character also double-check the numbers/mechanics for one other player, if possible.

So, Marius, if you could check Dawn's crunch,
and, Dawn, if you could check Marius's crunch,
I'd be really grateful.
Anything you don't have the books for can be found online on the pfsrd.

Thanks! :)

Edward, your concept is awesome, see the details in my PM response.

Seranov, are you still thinking of an angel-blooded aasimar for your slayer?

In any case, I'll roll now.

Will post something in the coming days :)

Welcome, Gilthanis!

Sunny, partial wands allowed just means that you can, say, choose to buy a wand of cure light wounds with ten charges for 150gp for your character to start with instead of having to buy a full wand with fifty charges for 750gp. (Your character would still have to either be able to cast the spell or have the UMD skill in order to use it, though.)

ElMustacho, rolling on the variant aasimar abilities chart (on the d20pfsrd) to replace your spell-like ability is fine. In fact, if you want to choose one instead of taking the random one, I'm okay with that, too.
As for the technology guide, I'd prefer it if you could run the aspects you want to use by me for approval. The setting, as currently conceived, is fairly low-tech, but I am allowing Edward to make a Paladin Holy Gun, and I might be cool with whatever you have in mind as well. Just know that high-tech stuff wouldn't be common, and you might want to use one or both of your extra craft skills on being able to make/fix your own stuff.

FYI to ALL:
Choosing a variant aasimar heritage from the d20pfsrd chart is also fine, and it's a way for you to get different ability score bonuses, skill bonuses, and spell-like abilities for your aasimar, leading to much more variety and potential within just that one race. The cosmology of my world is somewhat different, so you might not actually be descended from an "agathion" if you choose the agathion-blooded aasimar heritage (and the same goes for the others), but the mechanical benefits would be the same.

ElMustacho wrote:

Something like starting as a Archon Lantern who rises in power during the campaign, obviously with much less class level.
So?

It's quite easy to get an Archon as a cohort or Improved Familiar at later levels, as sort of a guiding spirit for your character—you could build towards that.

* * *

Meanwhile, I'm still trying to figure out a character concept, but I like the setting thing. GM, what do you think of an Aasimar taking the Breadth of Experience feat? While it's technically limited to Elves, Gnomes, and Dwarves, the flavor is that it's meant for anyone old and experienced (experienced in the "seen the world" sense more than "leveled up"), and Aasimar have longer lifespans than Dwarves or Gnomes.

Thunderbeard, that makes sense to me. You can take the feat. :)

Hmm, it seems like there are two concepts that seem the most interesting to me. The first is rather unusual—a monk/investigator or monk/inquisitor multiclass character who seeks to find answers to mysteries of the divine through investigation as well as inner meditation (and mechanically, I think I can keep this character decent in combat). The other is an Arcanist (White Mage) archetype, which is a sort of divinely-inspired wizard with some healing, but it's also an ACG archetype so it's pretty new.

Thunderbeard again,
either of those concepts sounds good,
especially with an aasimar (of any of the seven heritages) as your race.
Pick one and have a ball with it! :)

GM Angelina wrote:

I am. Since we can pick from the chart of Variant Abilities, I think I will grab the "You gain an additional +2 racial bonus to your Wisdom score" variant.

I intend to make the character pretty much a Rogue, but on a much tougher, fighter-ier chassis. As far as backstory goes, he's going to be a little more rough-and-tumble than you might expect of an aasimar, but he's still going to be a good guy, overall. Probably Neutral Good, but I'm not really seeing any deities that would be a good fit (Ragathiel maybe, but he's technically a tiefling, so my Angelkin Aasimar would have some serious 'splainin' to do) so I might just say he's not specifically religious.

Seranov, rough-and-tumble sounds good to me! Don't worry about picking a specific deity yet. I'm using a home brew setting anyway. NG works fine for a rough-and-tumble good guy. He doesn't have to be religious, but he certainly could be the type to whisper (or growl) a quick prayer before getting into a brawl. As long as his heart is mostly in the right place, I can handle quirky, non-traditional aasimars. :)

Dark Archive

Totally down with that, Angelina. He's definitely going to be a "Mercenary with a Heart of Gold" kind of guy, but I'll do my best not to make him too cliche. I love playing NG characters, so you can count on me. :)

Also:

Quote:

piece meal armor (medium) [+7 AC, +4 max DEX, -2 acp, 35% asf, 33 lbs, 130g, normal speed]

chain +4 +4 -2 30% 25 lbs. 100g normal
lamellar, horn (arm) +1 +5 -2 25% 5 lbs. 25g normal
leather, studded (leg) +1 +5 0 10% 3 lbs. 5g normal

+7/+4/-2/33lbs/130g/normal speed

Do want. And, if I think I'm getting this right, I could make this Masterwork for 150g more (280g in total, 70g cheaper than a Masterwork Breastplate) and get armor that's Medium armor with +7 AC, +4 max Dex with a -1 ACP? Jebus, no wonder most people don't use these rules. D:

You are correct.

EDIT: Of course, I'm of the opinion that martials should also be able to get nice things. Hence, I love these rules. They're really great. :D
