Carefully peering around Groot's torso, Fenrarem takes note of the number of approaching enemies.

Seven Gnolls and nine guards? Those are pretty bad odds for the Gnolls. Must not forget about the thing allegedly chasing after them though.

Patting Groot's side comfortingly for a moment, Fenrarem shifts his sword to his left hand and begins casting a spell very slowly. Once the gnolls get closer he will finish the last words to his spell and hurl flame at the closest one.

Holding Initiative until one of the Gnolls is withing 30 feet, once that occurs he will cast Produce flame and lob it at the gnoll in question.

At the same time he pushes in tightly against Groot doing his best to hide himself by camouflaging the brown and dark greens of his cloak against Groot's bark.

Thanks to his sensor he placed earlier as was his custom at this point he had a good view of the gnolls. Still that was not his goal. He wanted to see what if anything they were trying to avoid.

Surprise Round - Ranged Attacks & Effects

The Gnolls rush forward unaware of the danger into which they rush. The camp scrambles to wake as the Seven and their new companions go to work...

Vaki, your Dark Claim is lain upon the one in yellow closest to you.

Raze and Valar move around the camp to be in flanking position once the Gnolls charge into the midst of the other companions.

Rhun's gunshot is so loud it deafens those around her. The Gnoll RED is hit but continues to stagger forward.

Fenrarem throws his flame setting the hair of the nearest Gnoll PURPLE to him alight, Groot snorts at the use of fire so close to him.

The Gnolls now seeing their danger raise their voices in a battle cry throwing themselves at you!

Igdus keeps his focus on what he perceives to be the biggest threat, as of this moment, he sees nothing in the damp mist filled forest.

Griswold's foes is the most talkative, "Die Dwarf!". His speech may leave much to be desire but he has skill with his spear, it pierces the left oblique of Griswold causing him to grunt in pain. Griswold takes 5 damage.

Groot's large size brings two of the jackal headed foes towards him, one narrowly misses chipping off a small piece of Groot, the second misses wide entirely. Please create an Avatar for Groot so I can easily access his AC, HP, etc. Thanks!

The final foe, the one struck by Igdus' blast charges at Valar, his spear finds purchase with the left thigh of Valar. Take a vicious 8 damage!

Seeing the two gnolls that have stabbed at Groot fills Fenrarem with a burning rage. Hopping around Groot to come to a stop to his left Fenrarem fixes his gaze on the burnt gnoll PURPLE. Gripping his in both hands he brings the weapon down in an arcing motion, pushing the gnoll's spear aside. With a lightning-fast flick of his wrists, he reverses the direction of his swing and catches the burnt gnoll in its now unprotected chest. Blood sprays as the well-forged weapon cuts deeply.

I never taught Groot to attack did I? But he's so frightened and the beast did stab at him, I just might be able to push him to do it.

Bump! All things aside, do you want me to wait for Rhun to go before I do my actions or just post and Rhun will catch up?

Male Human Moonlight Meditant 2

The argument had distracted him.

Whilst Valaronex was quite frankly sick and tired off Igdus’s attitude like the rest of them, he had to grudgingly, and mentally, admit that he had a point about the Gnolls. In likely would've been best to leave one or two of them behind to wake the caravan, whilst the others spread out in order to ambush them as they tried to attack the caravan. Instead of just standing and waiting for the Gnolls to come to them. The opening attack would be a lot more effective that way.

But Igdus could at least be a lot more... polite when the other guards decided it was best to make sure the camp was awake and ready, as well as defending them whilst they woke... and Valar couldn’t blame them either. They were hired as guards after all, and making sure no own was set upon whilst waking up was very important for a guard to do...

Distracted and not thinking straight, Valar didn’t notice the gnoll charging at him until the spear sank into his leg, forcing him down onto one knee as he growled in pain. Luckily he wasn’t fighting alone, and Gray was all to step up, driving the gnoll off and giving the ex-lycan time to rise to his feet... whilst his curse was controlled, remnants of its power still lingered in his blood that began closing the large gash opened up on his thigh, swiftly stemming the bleeding as he summoned his true power once again.

Igdus spies Valaronex getting hurt even with the guards aid. He was far enough away that they shouldn't notice him using his ability, once more he summons his magic. His eyes glow softly and seemingly from no where the air explodes with force around the gnoll.

Meanwhile, Tobar holds, so close to the camp he does not wish to reveal the true nature of himself or his comrades. Plus, it seems that his allies should prevail here!

Moving to stand close to Griswold, Fenrarem smirks at him.

''You did well for a dwarf. Still im not sure we should count that 2nd Gnoll as a full kill though.HAd it not been for my timely distraction you might still be hiding behind your axe.''

He smiles more widely as he taunts Griswold, but his tone is slightly sulky, as though he is upset that Griswold killed the gnoll and not he.

Noticing that Griswold is wounded, Fenrarem chants a spell and raises his holy symbol. His hands glows a soothing green.

''Do you require some healing Dwarf?''

At the same time he hears the merchant, cry out loudly and anounces that he won't allow the Gnoll to be murdered. The still conscious one cries out loudly but Fenrarem does not understand it.

Great, he doesnt want to kill the Gnoll. Next he's going to want to befriend the thing.

''Ehlonna save us from righteous fools'' He mutters quietly to himself.

Hearing the Gnoll cry out reminds him that the Gnolls were supposed to be running from something.

At this the smile leaves his face. He lays his hand on Griswold's wound, no longer interested in his opinion on the matter.

The wound mostly closes up and is no longer bleeding. Fenrarem nods at Griswold and moves to stand beside Groot to try and calm him down.

He calls out as he goes ''Can anyone understand what that blasted creature is jabbering on about?''

As he reaches Groot's side he rubs his hand up and down his side comfortingly. He notices that Vaki is standing nearby and nods his head at him.

''You are Vaki correct? I thank you for helping Groot, whether it was your intention or not I appreciate it.''

"Speak common if your going to talk. We already know you can."

Igdus says as he goes back to being on the look out. He still hadn't seen what was chasing them. Also he found the merchants words suspect, more so then usual considering his suspicions about the cargo. He had a feeling as to the gnolls fate.

"Aye yer timely distraction. What was that again, yer shit show of a acrobatics performance? How did the elves teach you to tumble? Did they chuck ye out of a tree" Griswold returns the smile through his great big bushy beard.

Griswold walks away from Fenrarem and towards the Merchant.

"Aye, thanks ya ya." Griswold mutters under his breath.

The merchant's words stopped Griswold in his tracks.

"Keep him, are ye out of yer f#$$ing mind?! That creature is a threat to the very people of these woods, nothing more than raiders and slavers. You wanna keep it as a pet, fine but let me take you to Skorane, I know a nice little woodmen family there. They can tell you how gnolls kidnapped their daughter and slit her throat." We set fire to their warren that day."
Griswold said somberly, as if in mourning.

"Well we better get going, blood's now in the air."

walking towards one of the gnolls his killed, taking out one of his dwarven "daggers". He begins to skin a gnoll.

He looks to Fenrarem and the group," What? I say his pelt was mine."

Tobar stands up from cover and looks upon the scene with nothing to say. The caravan master's word was final.

"Instead of skinning an intelligent being, would someone care to relieve them of their belongings. They may hold something useful. We should also move. Even if nothing was following them, the smell of fresh meat in the forest will draw predators if not worse things. We should make camp somewhere else to finish resting and leave the bodies."

Frankly he was a little surprised by the new pair. They couldn't be from the Gnarley or any large forest. It was basic practice even for animals to take their kills somewhere safe if they could. Otherwise rivals would come in short order. You eat your fill and leave or prepare to defend it. Gnolls did not deserve ether in his opinion but such rivals were rarely the sort to be reasonable.

"Just one moment, ah there we go! Griswold slices off a big piece of the gnolls hide.

He looks up to Igdus covered in blood.
"That should be enough of a distraction, if what ye said is true and they were running away from something. There are little tricks and things you learn from the rangers and living out here with druids. Yer probably right, let's see if they have anything useful."
That one is really nervous and batty, I've got my eye on him.

Griswold with with bloodied hands searches the gnolls, setting aside their weapons which could be refitted.

Let it be official that one of my skill points is going in perception.

Griswold turns to the group.
"Someone help me chuck these corpses on the outskirts, there is sure to be some animal or creatures that will eat them and leave us alone."

Male Human Werebat Harbinger 1/Stalker 1

"Hey look, Igdus finally offers useful commentary. Of course, he can't be bothered to do such himself."

Vaki beings looting the gnolls, starting with the one(s) that is still alive.

Fenrarem smirks at Vaki's comment, as he grabs the burnt gnoll that he killed and begins dragging it off by the side of the road.

He sends a pointed comment igdus' way as he does.

"Do you are okay with us skinning an unintelligent being but not an intelligent one? Why draw such a line in the sand. The things are dead, foul though he is, if the dwarf can find some use out of the thing's skin then let him be."

Having said his piece he goes back to dragging the gnoll's corpse away.

That quiet one needs to unwind a little. Hmm I wonder what the dwarf is going to do with his gnoll's skin? I was just kidding earlier, perhaps he didn't catch that.

When the corpse is by the side of the road he begins rifling through its pockets and takes its weapon.

He ignored Vaki, if he was blind to his abilities he felt no need to explain himself. As for the elf he does give a slight response.

"Do as you will."

That one had walked right into it along with his stumpy friend, he didn't count the tree. Considering how many lycans were around and how common it was for their kind to be kept as trophies in one form or another. The pair may get themselves torn to pieces. His people couldn't really be skinned when they turned but other trophies could be taken, not that they were kept for long when the elders found out.

Sending you a PM concerning my level up and the new abilities it grants. It may effect things more.

Tobar aids the looting effort.

As Vaki is going around checking the gnolls for anything useful, he eyes Griswold's handiwork with a critical eye. "Nice technique, little sloppy, but not bad. You've said before you're a ranger, right? Any chance you can help me harvest some natural toxins? I plan on brewing some poisons eventually, would be good to have some surplus ingredients on hand once I get started."

Male Moutain Dwarf, Natural Bear Lycanthrope Spell-less ranger (Dual-style) 2 | HP: 23/23 | AC: 17 T: 12 FF: 15 | Fort: +5, Ref: +5, Will: +3 | CMB: +5, CMD: 17 | Init: +4| Senses: Darkvision 60ft, Lowlight vision, Stonecunning, Perception: +7 , Survival +9 .

Griswold peeled the hide back with more force than tact. He shakes the blood off of the hide, from the gnolls midback to it snout.

Griswold looks up at man addressing him.

"Thanks, it's not as nice as it could be, but considering we're in a rush, it will do. I think I'm going to make a hat with a shoulder cape with this piece." Griswold's smile pierces through his bushy beard, happy to get a compliment for his work for once.

Whoa! What can I do fer ya?
"Poison, don't they say that's a woman's tool? No matter, I've got a good eye for herbs and plants in these parts, if we have enough time we can forage for mushroom. The wrong mushroom can be devastating, or in yer case the right one." Griswold stands to his feet, cleaning off his bloodied hands in the grass. He throws an open hand in front of him, ready to greet with the man.

"The name is Griswold Òrachbeithi, I'm sure you heard that enough. What's yer name lad?"

Male Human Werebat Harbinger 1/Stalker 1

Vaki barks a laugh "Poison is a tool, that often gets the job done, when other means fail."

He claps Griswold's hand "Vaki. Just Vaki."

"Aye you've got a point Vaki. The only poison I use one that makes you groggy and make poor life choices." he laughs at his own joke, putting one of his hands on his belly.

"Alright Vaki, I will use what knowledge I know of these woods to help ya." Griswold looks around and whispers,"as long as yer not a cunt to me like yer other companion." He points to Igdus.

Male Human Werebat Harbinger 1/Stalker 1

Flashing a grin, Vaki gives a little mock bow "I shall try not to be, O Mighty Ranger!"

Griswold points with his meaty index finger to Vaki."That's "O Mighty Illustrious Ranger" to ya or that's what I tell the young maidens in town fer a little bit of arse." He laughs louder than the cackling gnolls, removing his flask from his belt, he takes a small sip of the brew.

Male Human Werebat Harbinger 1/Stalker 1

Vaki laughs loudly as well "Wisely said Master Griswold. Sometimes such words is all it takes to seal the deal."

Shadow's Status

557 CY - 8th Day of Coldeven - Gnarley Forest7th Night of the Trip

The Merchant does not even entertain objections to his command. His two bodyguards truss up the unconscious gnoll and beat the held one into unconsciousness trussing it up as well. They throw both into the fourth wagon and close the door.

Igdus:
As he has not said much it is hard to read what he means. It is also hard to understand what, if anything he wishes to do with the gnolls. On things is for certain, you are going to want to keep a close eye on that wagon in the coming days.

Whatever these gnolls were running from never materializes or at least you never see it.

Marya Darkeyes opts to not move camp and instead posts a double watch for the night setting up a second and third fire causing much groaning from the men.

A search of the six gnolls reveals that they were nomads of some sort. They carry spears, primitive leather armor, daggers, and a total of 17 silver half of which is in copper pieces.

Fenrarem's inspection reveals that Groot was miraculously unharmed in the encounter.

Kate confers with Rhun about the combat who remains uncharacteristically silent with the rest of you.

The corpses of the gnolls are piled up away from the campsite and watched closely until daybreak. The fires and the smell of man seems to have kept all but the bravest of predators away from the corpse pile for the night as day breaks.

Blearly eyed and miserable from the rain which continues to fall and heavier than it did the previous night, the caravan hits the road.

557 CY - 9th Day of Coldeven - Gnarley Forest8th Day of the Trip

The wagons begin to slow down due to the steady rain and the lack of maintenance on the road, the ruts have run rather deep. Tired guards pull the wagons out of the ruts and complain loudly to wake your group up on occasion as Marya never asks any of you to aid in this work.

Does anyone wish to do anything during the day? Any of you injured regain 2 HP from the rest but if you are injured getting healed is likely a good idea.

Male Human Natural Werehawk Incanter 2

Igdus keeps to himself and keeps watch as usual. Ignoring the rain as it slides unusually easy off of his hair and flesh, though not enough to keep him completely dry. Having suffered no injuries and gained his rest he dwells on how the current state of things favored an ambush. His eyes pay special attention to the wagon with the gnolls when they pass over during his sweep.

DM:

Take 20 on perception as usual. With his new telescope power his mod is +16 now with reduced distance penalties.
