Hello, this is my first time cracking open my very own PbP gameplay thread (though not my first time DMing). Please bear with me. The game won't start for some time, but players are free to do whatever in the meantime.

”Though Xho Nuo has made no formal announcement, we have learned the sifu has chosen to hold the qualifying round for this decade’s tournament here in Absalom. The Pathfinder Society has long sought to send one of its members to compete in this tournament. My guess is that he’ll send one of his agents to rile up as many lowlifes as possible to serve as fodder for the first round of the contest”

The little halfling packed carefully, knowing she wouldn't be back at the Grand Lodge anytime soon. She fastened her Armor tightly around her and strapped her twin multi to her waist. Finally, she grabbed her satchel and went to meet her team. None of them struck her as familiar as she glanced over them.

"Now, here's how it's going to go, gang. Listen to me and we'll get in and out smoothly. I've only had one mission not go perfectly, and that's never going to happen again. I expect to be in line for a VC position any time, so failure here is not an option. Is everyone ready? Anyone need to stop for supplies? We have to be prepared for anything," the little drill sergeant barked out to the others.

"And me? I'm the Baroness, Shel Whispertongue. You can call me Shel."

A dark-skinned Garundi human male accompanied by a black panther small cat nods to the others, "Ajax..and this Ara. Ranger by day and by night."

It's fairly clear that Ajax's weapon of choice is his bow. Ajax spends the next couple of minutes learning the skills, spells, and abilities of the others, as well as sharing his own. "Shel, I find that knowing how your teammates operate helps everyone work together."

Keep in mind Vrald is out till the 15th, so we will likely need to bot the fighter till Sunday.

Ajax, a ranger such as yourself probably already has a read on one such as myself. In case, not I'm a student of the magical arts, one may say a conjurer mostly, but I've studied most of the major magical schools to some extent.

With that Sarnoc draws forth his Lesser Extend Metamagic Rod and casts extended Mage Armor on himself.

Now then Zarta owes me a few magical things, I'll swing and pick them up on our way. Any requests?

Fellow Pathfinders my FJC reward - Master Librarian allows me to requisition up to 3 alchemical or magic (not wands or scrolls) total value up to 800 gp. Any requests? Some options - Healing potions, Potion of Fly, Potions of Invis, Potions of delay poison, or other clericy spells, like maybe lesser Rest?

I'll also use my FJC reward - Scholar to purchase a scroll of Hold Monster at a discount if that's ok GM.

A tall and strong man of obvious Shoanti roots starts distributing small paper cards, clearly drawn by hand. They're perfumed, colorful, and you can read "I went in an adventure with Kallyan!" on them, together with a drawing of stylized drums under a shiny halo with sun rays. After he finishes with the cards, he finally speaks in a loud voice, full of accent.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's my indubitable pleasure to introduce him - the man himself. The eyes who seduced a dragon. The angel who brought peace to Osirion. A celebrity of humble origins and a heart beyond limits. - he smiled openly, as if genuinely excited - Him, the man whose the gods brought back from death for refusing to lose his art, a master of music, socially engaged and yet intrepid adventurer and slayer of evil beasts! The poet of the drums, voice of the sands, burnt by the sun! He's KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA... LLYAN!!!

He waved both hands, and another smiling figure appeared from behind him. With long beard, slightly graying hair and carrying a walking stick, the celebrity bard uses a pair of small sunglasses and has a slightly tanned skin. He has a strange beauty and shine to him. He tapped gently the shoulder of the big Shoanti man.

Thanks, Phraed. Talented as Sarenrae blessed you to be! - he said, with a voice enticed by melody and obviously false humility. Phraed smiled, clapped excitedly for some more seconds, and finally retired from the room.

It's my pleasure to be here with you, my fellow pathfinders. Don't worry about my vast fame denouncing our presence - I was graced with a certain mastery for disguises, a gift given by the Sun itself. I'm sure we will be well succeeded on our affairs!

If anyone is from Osirion, there's a good chance to have heard of him (because of his fame). If you had been to Shiman-Sekh, then it becomes a certainty. Please forgive the flourish introduction and long post! :) From the player now, it's a pleasure to be playing with you guys and our GM.

Isonda stands up from her small folding chair and claps loudly for the entertainer. She's a youngish looking halfling with long blond hair tied back and kept tidy with a large ribbon. She stands favoring her right leg and comfortably wears some rather heavy looking armour made from steel plates in a style that screams Tian Xia.

"Oooh i didn't know i'd be adventuring with somebody famous! This will be even more exciting now." she distractedly claps just long enough for everyone else to notice her before realizing she's the center of attention.

"I'm afraid i don't have a companion who can announce me, he usually just goes 'OINK' and snuffles the around... My name is Isonda. I guess i'm a bit of a knight, and a healer, and a conduit for natural magics..." she pauses and thinks for a second before continuing.

"Hmm this is where things get complicated. I don't know where my power comes from really, but I use my gifts to help others as much as I can. I also like to travel, although that World Wound place was pretty awful and i didn't like it all." she gets a little lost in thought again before realizing everyone is still looking at her.

"Me and Scratchings are ready to go when all of you are though! Huzzah!"

And with that she awkwardly takes her seat again while rubbing her sore leg to get the feeling back.

Ajax nods at Sarnoc, "Yes, that Zarta is a piece...Speaking of items, I could use some oil of bless weapon. I used my last vial while at the Green Market, and I regret to say it was wasted. Used up the rest of gold enchanting the bow and making sure i've got some measure of protection from mind control. Down to my last 50gp as it were."

Ajax raises an eye at Kallyan's entrance and smirks. . Ara ignores the affair and begins preening herself. "Nice." Ajax, despite his rough appearance, seems to appreciate the humor in the affair.

"Archer, are you saying you need more gold to buy your magical oil? I have some extra coinage in the event you need it.". She turned to the others and addressed them again. "I'm a bit of an expert at a little of this and a little of that. I can crack a lock, and slice though an evil doer with my magical kukri. I can activate most wands pretty well, too. So, that's that in the case of an emergency."

Of course, what's the discount rate for you? Do you want me to mark it off your Chronicle, or will you do that yourself/mark it off your previous Chronicle?

After making their preparations, the party finds "Devil's Dregs" in a quiet, rundown section of the Docks, a weathered wooden sign hanging above a wide alcove that reads its name. A pair of thick double doors within the alcove lead into the tavern.

Any other preparations you want to make now, or do you just head in?

Kallyan will disguise as a simple middle-aged traveler. His intention is to reduce a lot the chance of him being recognized as the celebrity he is, and end up linked to the Pathfinder Society.

Purchasing a disguise kit for 50 gp or lower value if my bargaining works - 1 use out of 10. I'll assume we will add it to the chronicle at the end

Diplomacy (Bargain): 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (6) + 21 = 27 Assuming "during the day"; it's a +20 instead if it's night

As for disguising:

As the group discusses their preparations, Sarnoc draws a small piece of parchment, a pen and ink quill. He jots a quick note, folds it and lays it on a nearby table.

Later as they cross the grounds of the Grand Lodge, a small wayang appears as if out of nowhere and hands Sarnoc two vials. Thanks Felesan, tell Zarta I said thank you as well. With that the wayang vanishes again.

Examining both vials he hands one to Ajax, One Oil of Bless Weapon as requested. Now here is a Potion of Fly, who would like to hold onto it?

With Master Librarian, I'll grab Oil of Bless Weapon (50gp) and Potion of Fly (750gp).

Scholar is from the season 5 rewards FJC the discount is 20% so 5th level scroll would be 900 (1125 normally), it's a once per scenario reward; I've added to my tracker and will mark it off my gold at the end.

Ajax notes Sarnocs casting of Mage Armor...

"Ara would benefit from Mage Armor if you have one to spare. If not, I have a wand with the spell, and given this is a tournament where we've been directed to secure lodging, I suspect we'll have an opportunity replenish our spells at least once during this contest."

Ajax uses his wand of Shield Companion on Ara and Longstrider on himself. Ajax will also cast Resist Energy - Fire on himself and then recall the spell to one of his 1st lvl Pearls of Power.

Ajax spells will be: 1st - Resist Energy, Liberating Command; 2nd - Cat's Grace, Aspect of the Bear. Don't think Versatile Weapon is probably going to be needed in an urban setting.

@GM - Ajax has Favored Terrain: Urban +4 (boosts init among other things), Favored Enemy: Human +4

Beseeched to watch the parties back, Ajax takes a moment to note the surroundings and examine the building from all sides.

A young knight jobs up to the group in full plate, no mean feat at the best of times. This one however has also got a large shield and a significant array of weapons weighing him down.

"Sorry for my delay, affairs of state!" he says.

"Lord Vrald of Taldor, at your service."

He eyes up the disreputable inn that the group stands in front of. "As we were instructed to find accommodations, I have taken the liberty of booking us all rooms at the "Celestial Arms" a rather more salubrious enterprise than this one. "[b]I can personally attest to the softness of the beds and the quality of the ale!"

The knight takes in the group around him.

"We should probably discuss tactics at some stage. If there is trouble, I am equipped and trained to handle most martial threats. So feel free to take cover behind me. Should we encounter a spellcaster... I may require some assistance."

Sarnoc nods to Vrald he can see the quality of the knight, clearly a top notch man.

Celestial Arms, I've heard good things about it. I think it best to resist the comforts of my townhouse in the Ivy District and the allures of Mrs. Blakros; and stay focused on the task at hand. Yes the Celestial Arms sounds great.

Removing his pearl of power from his pouch, Sarnoc recalls his Mage Armor spell and then casts it on Ara.

Here you are; that should be good for about 8 hours, after that we'll need the wands.

Looking back to Vrald, Indeed it may come down to tactics if the other competitors have the quality I believe they might. Needless to say I'm most comfortable at the back and out of harms way. I'll do what I can to help the fight from there, if possible.

Without warning, a flash of smoke flares up from the center of the tavern floor. As it clears, a towering, golden-skinned humanoid of hideous and terrifying countenance steps forth, ebon teeth gleaming fiendishly. Standing before the crowd, she greets them with a slow and gracious bow, yet her eyes never look away.

The creature gestures to call the crowd’s attention, and one by one they fall silent.

“Good evening and allow me to introduce myself, I am called Kiang Zhen. My sifu, Xho Nuo, the Emissary of the Ruby Phoenix, wishes for me to tell all of you that he is most pleased to see so many of you eager to attend the tournament. It is his desire that everyone please find a table and make yourselves comfortable at his expense.”

The room becomes increasingly packed as contestants file in, and barely a minute later arriving contestants quickly fill all remaining tables leaving the tavern with standing room only – yet more and more continue to fill the place out – it is tightly packed and it is a struggle to both keep a hold of your own food and drink as well as dodging the spilled food and drink of others.

A short time later…

”Again, your attention please. I regret to inform all of you that Sifu Xho Nuo will not be present this evening, though he has appointed me to speak on his behalf.”

”To speak with candor, there are many who wish the Sifu dead and wish to steal from him the ancient secrets he was appointed to guard. This comes as no surprise to the Emissary, for he has been charged with the protection of a great and terrible power. Even now, in this very room, some of these same individuals sit amongst us. To them I say, Sifu knows who you are and fears you not. He even entreats you to join the Ruby Phoenix Tournament, for he shall not compromise the primary intention of the contest – to find the world’s greatest martial artist. Rest assured, this tournament shall test the mettle of its contestants, regardless of their intentions. Competition shall be fierce and violent without regard for contestants lives. That is your concern – not mine, not the Emissary’s. Those who fail might be lucky enough to walk away with their lives. For this reason, there are few places where our tournament is truly welcome. Thus, given the nature of the tournament and other circumstances, the Emissary has expressed to me the need to retain secrecy. However, I assure you he shall make an appearance before the end of the qualifying round.”

”Lastly, I have noticed many of you have come as teams. This is good, for initially, you may need help from allies you trust.” The beast pauses for a moment, letting his dark, pupil-less gaze hover upon the crowd. From his belt he unfastens a leather satchel and holds it aloft before the crowd. “I have here 100 rubies. On the morrow, fifty of these rubies will begin to glow, and those individuals or groups in possession of one such gem shall be contacted by one of our agents, who will give them the details of where the first event of the qualifier will take place.” then with a wide and wild grin he says “And so it begins!”

On his final words, he tosses the bag into the air, sending the rubies scattering everywhere. The next moment, he vanishes, leaving behind only a vaporous wisp.

Those of you who possess the Combat Reflexes feat or any ability that protects you from being caught flat-footed may now make a DC 22 Reflex save to catch a ruby as it is still sailing through the air. Otherwise....

The tightly-packed tavern erupts in total pandemonium as the rubies land among the throng! You'd better act quickly if you want a ruby, and you'd better catch as many as you can if you want one that glows...and you'd better be prepared for if you find one, because in that case, your troubles are just beginning!

Start by making a 5 rounds' worth of DC 20 Perception checks to notice the faint shimmer of a ruby on the floor. Alternatively, you may pick a fight with a rival group that has already found a ruby - easily enough spotted, presumably, by the huge s#&$-eating grins on their faces.

Shel plucks a ruby out of the air with quickness. "The rest of you do something," she directs. She immediately starts looking around as she pockets the first ruby.

Not only is it unclear, there's no evidence whatsoever saying anyone is! Remember what you've already been told about both the culture of the Docks and the attitude of the Tournament regarding your safety.

Also, has Ara had any sort of training in seeking/fetching things other than prey/enemies? I'll accept her rolls if so, but otherwise I don't think she can help.

There is barely time to blink twice after Shel snatches the first ruby from the air that a pair of of empty spaces in the otherwise-dense crowd suddenly are filled by the menacing bodies of a pair of Red Mantis assassins!
