Baldwin the Merciful's: Razor Coast (Inactive)

Game Master baldwin the merciful

The Razor Coast has drawn men to madness and slaughter since the world was young. Tulita natives, born from the same fire as this jagged coast, claim the Razor existed long before the world’s other lands. It is a crucible of flame cooled by the ocean’s caress and its mountains, reefs, and lightless depths teem with as many terrors as lustrous spoils. The Razor bucks the trappings of civilization in much the same manner the storm-tossed sea spurns the men who dare mount her. This is no place for the weak-willed. Untested souls are food for its storms, its fickle gods, its ancient spirits, and the evil predations of unfathomable creatures. No less dangerous are the men who make the coast their home and whose dark desires put most horrors to shame.

I considered an Oracle build for the Kitsune character I had in mind. If a high number of 'skilled' builds are posed, and fewer 'divine' builds, I am open to rebuilding while keeping a similar trickster/chaotic ideal.

Also, I'll take a moment to say that I'm aware that many players who play Chaotic Neutral are red flags and pose potential disruption to the game, and that is not my plan or intent. CN is not a free pass for idiocy.

Northlander:

I'm fine with the background for your other character. Just make sure you read the build requirements and my follow-up posts.

I see that you are relatively new in posting, and I want to make sure you understand that my games tend to be quick paced. Will you be able to keep up?

Former GM wrote:
Hey Matt! Glad to hear you found someone willing to run RC buddy! To answer your question, tell your GM to check later in the book, because Elves HAVE had something of a history in the RC. I don't want to possibly spoil anything for you that the GM may want hidden but, rest assured, there is a background to build upon. I'm not sure if it's considered hidden knowledge amongst Elves, but I know that most of humanity has forgotten it.

So apparently, Elves have some history in Razor Coast. May I ask him for elaboration or could you find it for me? I would do it myself, but I don't own the Razor Coast book. Planning on getting the Player's Guide though! And I'm strongly considering the Oracle build, since you mentioned Oracles shortly after I said I may change to a caster. Is some of the material in the ARG allowed? Looking at the Ancient Lorekeeper archetype in particular.

Thanks! :)

EDIT: I know you said no ARG, but I am just curious about the section on Elves. If you are not ok with it, I can easily work with what material is available!

STR Ranger wrote:

Crap dude. Sorry. Didn't wanna step on anyone toes.

I am also considering the spear style with a Kensai build. Less buff and more blast but I am still bouncing ideas/feats combos.

This is my other favorite example:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jlACgYHtWCI

Don't worry, I don't consider it stepping on toes. Just cause two characters use similar fighting styles does not mean they are interchangeable. It's all about the RP.

GM:
New to these forums. Not new to PBP mind you, even if I admittedly have not played in years before Hadassa's game. It also depends a lot on timing.

I don't necessarily have the problem with 3-4 posts a day but it's the timing that concerns me. I'm back to work starting next week and I may not be able to post from work if I'm dealing with a customer. That's something out of my control so at times I can post all day long while at others my posting may be limited to between 4 pm and 10 pm EET (Eastern European Time). So many posts yes, at specific times no.

I prefer fast paced PBP over slow one but... yeah. Timing might be an issue so I think I better sit this one out.

The Silver Prince:

There are elves in the razor and they have a storyline but at this stage you're not familiar with it. I mentioned in the build requirements that I'll provide various rumors/snippets when players are selected. These will serve as possible links or motivations.

I don't want to start making exceptions in player builds, I've already mentioned what is permitted out of the ARG.

GM/DM:
Ah, ok. Works for me!

A waves or wind oracle might be fun. A waves oracle can be Jesus first level with Fluid Walk. I think I will stick with my current selection however. Or can I submit 2?

Dm: she has a NPC class => aristocrate. It is written in in her class description just before "theologian"

@ Zayne - one submission, please.

The Exchange

How much gear should we purchase? Should we be packed up with provisions?

CUCHULAINN here.

Sorry it took me so long to post something.

Here is a (mostly) completed character for the arcane slot:

Bennevy Innswell, human (Expert/Cross-blooded Dreamspun/Protean Sorcerer)

I need to write his back story up and equip him still, but in a nutshell:

Bennevy was a young scholar who started researching dark and forbidden knowledge. The more he researched, the more his mind was opened.

Admittedly, he's very HP Lovecraft in flavor, but I think he'll be fun to play.

4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 3, 3) = 15

I dunno about you...but I have 30 days worth of Trail Rations in my pack. If the food supplies run out, guess who is going to be the one mysteriously gaining weight...

Of course, if you want to play it safe you could always buy yourself a Ring of Sustenance. I considered it myself, hehe.

GM/DM:
I'm calling in a favor from a friend so I can buy the Razor Coast books that I can get character options from. I presume the Freebooter's Guide and Fire As She Bears are the PC friendly ones, right? Does the core book have any PC options or no? If no to the latter, I will refrain from buying that book.

And no worries about me spending money on the books, I was looking for an excuse to call in that debt anyway lol! Why do I feel like one of the Lutece Twins from Bioshock Infinite talking about a debt? Hope it doesn't reflect poorly on me, but I have just not pushed for the last bit of money I was owed until now.

Good question Ken a week trail rations, you are boarding or on-board a ship that has food and drink. So you're not using personal provisions while on board unless you want to (say for a particular beverage that you enjoy).

You can spend as much or as little of your 6,000 gold pieces as you would like. The only real restriction is only 2,500 can be spent in any one item. You are an experienced adventurer so you would have some items.

Silver Prince:

The players guide is Razor Coast—Freebooter's Guide (PFRPG). Fire as She Bears is really DM oriented but it does include new spells, feats and some PC Options.

What is really disappointing is RC only has one general ship layout and there are no new layouts in FASB. It gives descriptions of ships but no layout. Of course, I have layouts from other sources, its just a pain that they describe ships and not provide the layout.

@ Bennevy - Let me know when your completed.

History:
Sathran Saltblood was the 3rd of 5 children born to a human male and his half-elven wife, all of them daughters. Sath was the only one of her sisters to display elven characteristics and therefore always felt apart from them. What also set her apart was that she took after her father, a merchant ship owner who still helped his crew with many of the day to day chores of the ship, teaching Sath from the moment that she could walk to follow in his footsteps. Sath always thought that she would- that someday she would take over for her father and captain the ship and run the business for him herself. Sath was a dreamer in this way.

Although her father had always wanted a son, and trained her to insure that she would make certain that his business was one day run properly, he was realistic enough to understand that a crew would not easily work for a woman, no matter how competent she might be. On Sath’s 14th birthday, her father announced to her that he had betrothed her to a young man who, while he had no idea of how to run a ship, was a fast learner with a head for business. The young man was also sweet and kind, and loved Sath. Her father thought he had done the very best he could for her- making sure that she would be involved day to day in the life that she loved and have a good man for a husband in the deal.

Sath however, felt betrayed- why must she marry some man to keep what was already rightfully hers? Why would the men that already admired her skills as a sailor not follow her as a boss? Why must society be so cruel? Sath gathered what she needed that evening and fled to up the coast to live on her own alongside the ocean, eventually meeting an old man who saw in her another with a soul of the ocean, and he taught her the ways of the aquatic druid over the next 4 years.

In the meanwhile however, her father had grown ill and he was depending more and more upon his intended son-in-law to help with the business. The young man had grown bitter however- feeling spurned by the woman he loved, he was not able to see that she had not meant to hurt him, and he sought to make her pay for his broken heart. When her father died, he took over the business and enlisted the law to help him bring her back, as her father had signed a formal contract with him that he should marry Sath. Finding out she was being hunted by the law and by other less savory types employed by her betrothed, Sath decided her course- she would flee her homeland. Cutting her hair and dressing in the manner of a man, her years of hard labor on the ship and with her mentor allowed her to pass as male, and she booked working passage on a ship out of port, heading for the dangerous area known as the Razor’s Coast, where she felt confident none would look to find her or seek to chase her.

Appearance: Sath dresses and acts (for the most part) as a man- though she does not go to absurd lengths to hide her gender, few realize that she is a woman. She does this not because she seeks to be male but because she understands now that many will not accept her and her skills as qualifying her for the life she seeks the way they would a man. So a man she appears to be.

How is this for a character?

Hey - I changed the concept a bit; he's now a Bard: Archaeologist (2) and Ranger: Freebooter (2).

I haven't done his gear or HP until I know if it's okay.

Meantime, I took one of the traits Dealmaker.

Please let me know what you think and if there are any suggestions.

He's more of a knife fighter, finesse fighter and prefers using a whip.

GM:
I'm still here, batting around quite a few ideas. I have a few general questions for you:

1. Would you approve Seekers of Secrets for the Boon Companion feat?

2. If I were to choose urban ranger, could you provide any advice on my options for a favored community? Maybe the ship itself or a prominent coastal town?

3. Could you provide a general list of suitable favored enemies? I'm not trying to min/max here, I would just like to avoid completely missing the mark, if possible.

4. Would leopard be a suitable animal companion for this campaign? One build I am considering is a TWF scimitar/kukri human ranger from the mwangi with a leopard familiar/companion. I may or may not drop the Besmara aspect.

Thanks.

ZAYNE here. This is the alias. Made a few changes. Added one trait. None of the S&S ones fit so I didn't pick one. Dropped the Cloak or Resistance for a MW composite longbow[4] and some arrows. Factored in the +1 ability increase to DEX at level 4.

Sphia's equipment will include a wand of CLW , a pearl of power and a Handy Haversack leaving her with 150 GP

Dirk Hawkins:

Thanks for the build, without going into details of the mechanics it looks fine. The Dealmaker trait is nice. Background is fine. How do you see him advancing?

I see from your profile that you DM mostly. I see you post a lot in your games are attentive that's good. If you look at my profile you can see that I run quick paced games, so I want to make sure your alright with the pace, if selected.

16bits:

Link what you want me to consider if its an exception to the books that I've indicated.

As far as favorite enemies/communities, that's hard to go without giving away plot at this time. You can assume that most, if not all, of the listed favorite enemies will appear. If you, or another player, select something that is way off base we can address it after selection.

Leopards are on the small cat list of animal companions.

Response to GM:

1. Re: Advancement –

I’m not entirely sure at this time. For now I was thinking of swapping back and forth between Bard, then Ranger – with a stronger lean toward Bard.

The trick that I’ve run into many times in the past as a PC is that I tend to advance based on the circumstances of the campaign. If (for example) we spent the next two levels on the high sea, of course I’d take ranks in Profession: Sailor, but if we suddenly left the ship and advanced into the wilderness and spent the next two levels there, I’d put my ranks behind Survival.

This often compromises a “perfect build” in the long run, because if people hop between ideas like that it can end up ruining an ultimate character. In this concept (for example) I should have gone straight Bard with a higher Charisma and lower Wisdom/Intelligence for the point build – but it didn’t feel right for some reason.

So I guess the short answer is (for now) I’ll be going between Bard and Ranger depending on the circumstances. I hope that’s okay, but if you feel the group has a specific need, I’m open to tailoring things to fit the group’s needs.

2. I have no problem with the pacing. Most of the time I get gigged by my players for posting too much or too frequently. I think our pacing will be fine.

The only issue I foresee is that I end up making lengthier posts then the average people (sometimes it’s several pages of text). If that’s okay, if you don’t mind lengthier posts (I also have lots interaction with the other players). Just keep me posted on it, though.

My work schedule is pretty sporadic, so it depends on what time of the day I can post, but I typically post multiple times a day if I’m in a game. So that shouldn’t be a problem for me.

HP for character -

1d10 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
1d10 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Do we start with Max HP on level 1? And do we roll HP for the NPC class and add that, too?

@ Dirk hawkins - max HP NPC level 1 and Max HP class level 1. So you max out on both levels.

Dirk:

I don't mind not having the perfect or ultimate character. RP is important and flaws add flavor. The game is split between land and sea.

baldwin the merciful wrote:

** spoiler omitted **

"Aye, aye, then... Looks like I got a total of 39+5 for Con for a total of 44 HP..."

I'll get gear and the sheet nutted out soon. You said 6,000 GP max and 2,500 GP on one item. Could we take 2 items for 2,500 each, for example?

@Dirk - Yep you can have two 2500 items.

baldwin the merciful wrote:

I may not take them; just wanted to get things straight is all. It should be good to go soon enough!

GM:
I'm confused, since a druid would have no reason to take this feat because his animal companion's level is always equal to his class level. Or am I missing something?

Bennevy is equipped and backstory is finished.

I apologize if the back story reads a little choppy. It was much longer, and I had to edited down to fit in the Alias page.

Anyway, I hope you like Bennevy enough to accept him for the campaign.

16bit:

The feat states:

Benefit: The abilities of your animal companion or familiar are calculated as though your class were 4 levels higher, to a maximum effective druid level equal to your character level. If you have more than one animal companion or familiar, choose one to receive this benefit. If you lose or dismiss an animal companion or familiar that has received this benefit, you may apply this feat to the replacement creature.

I don't have the animal companion book to read the context provided. I thought it was for multi-class. Since the prerequisites state: Prerequisites: Animal companion or familiar class feature. I can see that it applies to other classes that have the class feature.

Link a rule if you have it handy.

Editted Response.

Edit 2:

Link
I believe this is the author of the books post. Yes a ranger can have this feat when he gets his animal companion.

baldwin the merciful wrote:

Do you permit gear from "Ultimate Equipment"?

As an aside, I think Boon Companion is only handy if you're multi-classing.

yes ultimate equipment is permitted.

that was my initial take on the boon companion.

Here is the specific text from Hunter's Bond:

"This ability functions like the druid animal companion ability (which is part of the Nature Bond class feature), except that the ranger's effective druid level is equal to his ranger level –3."

Basically, the reason for a ranger taking the boon companion feat is so that the animal companion is based off of my CL, instead of my CL-3. So at 4th level, my leopard would be level 4 instead of level 1. So for the cost of a feat I get a companion as a druid would.

See the Edits to my previous post.

Character Sheet is fully updated with all notes/details on board.

If anyone sees any suggestions for me, please let me know - I'm totally open to suggestions at this point.

So far my guy is a good support character; decent fighter, decent skill monkey and not bad at a supplemental healer in a pinch.

I have had a lot of interest in this game, I'm going to shorten the recruitment time to Wednesday, July 9th, at 10:00pm. This should provide anyone interested in this game an opportunity to complete their characters. If you are just catching up from the holiday weekend don't panic there is time to build and submit a character.

Ok, sounds good! I think I'm going to stick with my original submission, with a few adjustments. I'll work on the backstory some tomorrow, because I'm going to sleep in a few hours. Got some bloodwork scheduled for 8:30 in the morning so I should hopefully start writing again sometime around lunch.
