Baldwin the Merciful's: Razor Coast (Inactive)

Game Master baldwin the merciful

The Razor Coast has drawn men to madness and slaughter since the world was young. Tulita natives, born from the same fire as this jagged coast, claim the Razor existed long before the world’s other lands. It is a crucible of flame cooled by the ocean’s caress and its mountains, reefs, and lightless depths teem with as many terrors as lustrous spoils. The Razor bucks the trappings of civilization in much the same manner the storm-tossed sea spurns the men who dare mount her. This is no place for the weak-willed. Untested souls are food for its storms, its fickle gods, its ancient spirits, and the evil predations of unfathomable creatures. No less dangerous are the men who make the coast their home and whose dark desires put most horrors to shame.

I have the basic Razor Coast book.

There is quite a bit of interest in this campaign, so I'm going to run it.

Stay tuned for the build requirements they will be up in the next day or so.

woot!

I too would be interested in joining another campaign. Seeing one that has Jelani interested (GM of 2 games I'm in as well as a player in one I'm running, and a player in another game I'm in, ha!) only makes me all the more excited.

Jelani: as it seems your not entirely settled on a concept, want to work on characters that know each other, either by familial relation or were part of a previous adventuring team?

GM: In regards to knowledge of the region, I have absolutely none, and would incorporate that into my character.

If you don't mind letting me butt in, participating in this (or something like it) would work well for my character concept. He is designed to be the martial partner for a non- or semi-martial character. Almost like a Warder from Wheel of Time, but a little more of an equal partner than that.

By all means, I'm not against working with others as well. I just bounced it off Jelani as he has seen several characters of mine and knows how I RP. Feel free to browse my games if you'd like to get a feel.

GM: Apologies if anything like this has been asked so far, but it's a part of pathfinder I thoroughly enjoy and am curious...will downtime rules or item creation have a place in this game?

I'm going to withhold proposing anything or agreeing to anything until I see what Baldwin puts out there for character creation rules.

Glad to see Thron, Dreaming Warforged and STR Ranger all popping up here. All solid players I've had fun with in PBPs before. STR Ranger's strong endorsement of Baldwin has me even more excited to propose a character. (^_^)

I'm finalizing the build requirements and I'm waiting to hear back from STR Ranger on what class he is going to play. He is one of players that I mentioned that I slotted. I would hate folks to spend time building a character class when it's been filled.

As far as teaming up and knowing each other in the build process, that's risky. I may not choose all the characters. If you go that route make sure its a fluid situation. Once selected there will be time to tinker with backgrounds and characters.

Hi again.

Looks like there's tons of folks clamoring to get on board.

Real Life is swinging back towards "Splat YOU!" for me so I'll take a step back and maybe watch.

Very best of luck, cheers and wishes to all. (^_^)

True. I've actually seen that happen come to think about it. Probably should save that sort of background intertwining until after the final selections are made as you suggest.

That's another reason I'm hesitant. I've coupled myself to people in the past and then had them not get chosen, or vice versa.

Hello.

I will likely be playing a Bastard Sword Wielding Dwarf Inquisitor.
Gonna have to put a ton of ranks in swim...since I still wanna wear breastplate.

I LOVE teamwork feats. If anyone is interested in building around combat teamwork let me know.

Which ones you have in mind?

Sounds like a good campaign for an undine watersinger. Or perhaps even a cad fighter, plenty of room for teamwork feats there.

Thron wrote:

Paired Opportunist

Outflank
Broken Wing Gambit
Shake it off.

These are my favorites.
My regular feats will probably go towards
Combat Expertise, Blindfight, Moonlight Stalker, Improved Trip, Gtr Trip, Felling Smash

Still highly interested and mulling over a concept. Eagerly awaiting build requirements. :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Rule the Razor you say? A fool’s ambition. The subtleties and perils of this realm are manifold. Land and sea murder at the whim of ancient gods. Men’s smiles hide a thousand knives. Those fooled into believing that the Kraken’s tentacles are more fearsome than its insidious and far‑reaching schemes soon find themselves cruelly enlightened – usually moments before calamity claims their souls. The Razor is too vast, its terrors too multitudinous, for even the bravest adventurer to conquer. It won’t stop them from trying though, and that means good business for me. I thank the gods daily for sending so many fools into this world.

This is the recruitment post for the Razor Coast game. Many will try to brave the treacherous Razor but most will die. Drink hard and enjoy your vices now because your death will be horrific. I’m looking for 6 brave, or foolish adventurers. I plan to keep this recruitment open for a week (7 days), depending on the response. I’ll check several times a day and review entries as they come in.

Two of the six positions have been filled already by a witch (Lucrenzia) and an inquisitor (STR Ranger).

Permitted Races:

Core Races
Cat Folk
Changeling
Goblins
Kitsune

Prohibited Classes:
alchemist, gunslinger, and summoner. Note: guns and black powder may be introduced later in the game. If it is introduced then it is going to be a new invention that the players will come across. There will be some DM boons at that time.

Books Permitted:
CRB, APG, UE, UM, UC, Shackles material. As DM I will use the RC books that I own, and I also will use a lot of 3PP material, especially from Raging Swann, Rite Publishing, and Frog God Games.

There are parts of permitted books that I do not use including but not limited to: Word of Power and Spell Duels, so it’s best to double check with the DM.

I do not permit ARG (except for the non-core races that I’ve permitted).
No ACG.

I’m not going to use the RC players guide for two reasons: 1. I don’t own it, and 2. I don’t want the players to have to buy the book. That being said if you own the book and want to use something from the book in your character build feel free to PM me with the details for consideration.

Warning:
Eastern equipment doesn’t really fit this adventure, so think twice if you design an eastern themed character, gear will be hard to come by and wickedly expensive.

Crunch and Rules for the Build:

Point Buy 20, plus your 4th level Stat bonus
No score below a 10, before racial adjustment.

Traits: 1 trait from the APG and 1 trait from Skull & Shackles

Everyone’s base begins: 1 level of either aristocrat, expert or warrior. Consider this your pre-adventuring life. This is a way to give players a small HD, skill, and save bonus. You begin with 1 NPC level and 4 Class levels.

Starting wealth: 6,000 gp. You can have no more than 2,500 GP in any one item.

Alignment: No real alignment restrictions, except you must work well together. I’m obviously not going to have LG and CE players in the same group. Depending on the party selection, I may ask a player to change their alignment to ensure party cooperation.

Hit Points: Max HP’s for your NPC level and class level one, thereafter you roll HPs. Reroll 1’s.

Ability scores and Skills: Explain how you arrive at your ability scores and skill totals. This makes it easy for me, so I do not have to deconstructive builds.

Item Creation: Scrolls and potions should be fine in down time but I doubt there will be enough time and suitable location to craft other items. I try to run a balanced game but unfortunately the balance tips when characters create their and their party members ultimate gear for a fraction of the cost.

Second Wind: Every character gets the innate ability to heal themselves 1d4+1 HP, 2/day, as a standard action.

Develop a brief description/background: I know many players spend a lot of time creating their background, and as a DM I respect that, and try to incorporate some (not all) links into the game. However, what matters more to me as a DM is your posting history. I do read game threads and I will see if there a history of vanishing from games. That being said, if you are new to PBP I do encourage you to submit a character – I was new once too. I have been known to choose one relatively inexperienced player per game, as I feel this helps to pay it forward.

Note: Those selected will get a few extra boons after they are selected.

Adult Themed: This will be adult themed, but well within Paizo's PBP standards. When in doubt put it behind a spoiler.

I’m looking for players that can work together and post more than a simple line, or two, of dice stats – descriptive actions will make it enjoyable to read. I try to be descriptive in my posting.

House Rules:

1. I do not retcon actions. I keep a brisk game pace. It becomes problematic for me to redo actions and consequences. Sorry.

2. A natural "1" on an attack roll is a possible fumble. The player makes a DC10 DEX check, including any ability modifier in the roll. A number below a 10 means you have either dropped your melee weapon or snapped your bow/crossbow string or your thrown weapon was dropped.

3. Roll HPs each level, reroll 1’s.

4. I will occasionally dip into the sanity/madness rules if the situation arises.

5. Just because something appears in a book does not make it automatically available for game play.

6. I will occasionally make an error in a rule interpretation. If that happens, cite the rule link for reconsideration. I will often, but not always, adjust the results. Just because something is arguably RAW does not make it automatically acceptable in this game. Please do not be a rules lawyer and argue every point that gets tedious.

There may be others, GM reserves right to amend.

Posting Requirements:
I’m an attentive DM and I post a boatload. This game will be quick paced, probably quicker than most PBP players are use to, my games consistently average 20 to 40 (or more) posts a day. I would like to see 2 posts out of the players. I understand that this can and will fluctuate with real life, but you can see from my previous games that I am a consistent and reliable poster.

I understand real life happens but warn us if you cannot post for a while. It is frustrating when someone drops off the boards without a notice. Communication is key and it’s simple courtesy.

I'm not a big fan of mega-game breaking builds, just because it’s arguably RAW doesn’t make it acceptable in my game. Power-gaming and cookie cutter builds lifted from some forum’s post or guide are frowned upon. I’m not looking for perfect builds but rather well balance characters.

A word of thanks to STR Ranger for his compliment on my DM style. If anyone has ever gamed with him, you know he comes up with incredible builds, but what makes STR Ranger different is he is an excellent roleplayer, who does not let his powerful builds overwhelm the story and other players.

Ah, so much for the idea of dusting off my wyrwood sorcerer then.

Dark Archive

Witch is taken, so be it. Second idea - kitsune bard with the Sandman archetype, or a class combo headed for arcane trickster. Either of which is a worshipper of The Lantern King. Social engineer and skill monkey, essentially. Oracle or Cleric of such could be fun as well.

I do not have much action on my account, I know, but I lurk constantly and have played tabletop for more than 25 years. I have been wanting to get into a game that is roleplaying heavy instead of a completely dice determined hack n slash.

Will get started on the background and crunch. Exciting!

I cannot convey enough guys.
Baldwin is serious about posting frequently.
For nearly the first 6 months in COT the whole group posted about 4-6 times a day.
We are at the final battle and we will be one of the very few groups to actually finish an AP online.

This level of engagement is only possible because of Baldwin's brilliant maps and attention to keeping up round by round.

I have had 3 chars over the course of this game and all were powerful builds that still died for one reason or another. Those who like strong chars (like I do) have to play the ROLE not merely the numbers.
Be descriptive with your posts, not simply 'Zod full attacks again'

Dark Archive

Sounds ideal, I am around every day and have plenty of time to contribute, and want a rich experience.

Yes, this all sounds perfect. Every single one of my pbps have ended in the GM disappearing around the first combat, and the more posts the merrier.

I will be submitting a ranger, and have PMed for approval on a ranger of Besmara.

By the way. THIS is the char I will be playing.

I need to adjust him.

Duncan is a Inquisitor of Ragathiel and smith by trade. Originally a member of a Westcrani group known as the Brotherhood, he seeks to exact vengeance for those downtrodden who cannot defend themselves.
Having died once in Westcrown from being surrounded by Monk assassins, he was pulled from the line in the boneyard and sent to another version of the world to close a Gateway called the dark road. Having survived a battle with a great evil, the crazy wizard who sponsored his group teleported him to the ship on the razor coast, to act as a guard for the ships captain. For the two were friends and Duncan was keen to serve his emprehal lord where he could. Wild and untaimed lands always held downtrodden, in need of a protector. ..and Duncan wanted a home.

I wrote a handbook on rangers. Let me know if you need a hand.

Regarding the posting frequency I don't want to scare folks off but it can be rapid at times. You take a day or two off from looking at the boards and the numbers pile up. The COT game had some insane posting rates but that's why its the second highest posted in PbP game on these boards. Second only to a mass player game. However, the rate in this game will be lighter (I think) and should resemble my Rappan Athuk game which has 6200 posts in 15 months of time.

Where in Golarion is the ship leaving for the Razor Coast departing from?

I'm looking pretty strongly at a saurian shaman. Considering goblin for race but undecided as of yet.

Lol. Duncan won't like you.

Baldwin, your booklist said the UC was allowed.
Did you mean Ultimate Combat or Campaign, since you have both...
HP: 1d8 ⇒ 7
HP: 1d8 ⇒ 8
HP: 1d8 ⇒ 5
HP: 1d8 ⇒ 6
Sweet

The ship departed from Westcrown hours before General Vourne arrived to stomp out some minor civil unrest.

I'm using this as link for the geographical relationship between Golarion and Razor Coast.

Map Overview

I'm going to ask that questions be posted in the recruitment thread (you a spoiler if you want) this will make it easier on me to respond timely plus others may have similar questions.

I forgot I had UCampaign but both are fine.

Level 2 HP: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Level 3 HP: 1d8 ⇒ 5
Level 4 HP: 1d8 ⇒ 8

Not bad...

Jelani - Don't take that as bad thing either. He was suspicious of the cleric in the last game for several months. It turned out to be excellent roleplay.

1d8 ⇒ 2
1d8 ⇒ 4

I'm going to go with human I think. A mwangi fellow, though I'm still thinking over the backstory. What do you want me to do for animal companion HP?

Will work on something. I'm hesitating between a cleric of Abadar who will work towards bringing civilization to the Coast, or a "put on a ship to die somewhere else" warrior- or scoundrel-type.

The "angle" is what I'm looking for...

I'll have my guy finished up at some point over the weekend.

Are you putting the shaman together from the ACG playtest? That playtest is not being used.

I assume that you are going with the cleric/druid archetype?

Saurian Shaman is a druid

HP roll for Sandman Bard:

Level 2 Bard: 1d8 ⇒ 3
Level 3 Bard: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Level 4 Bard: 1d8 ⇒ 8

I like what I see with the recruitment breakdown.

I will be putting together a chaotic neutral singer/actress bard with emphasis on illusions in the next few days for submission. I have not decided on a race yet, but my main idea is that she is constantly imitating those around her (ranging from mockingly so, meaning it as a compliment, or simple professional enthusiasm). She may or may not have multiple personas that she falls in and out of, maybe. Have to decide if she's crazy or just enjoys being other people. Of course, by extension this will make her a master of disguise and general skullduggery, which will all be good fun for her.

I missed read the post I thought he mentioned Shoanti Shaman.

Ah, clerics and scoundrels my two favorite classes.

On second thought, I am going to pull out, good luck everyone.

Rolled d8s when I'm playing a ranger. That's what I get for posting while distracted. Here are my correct hit point rolls:

1d10 ⇒ 6
1d10 ⇒ 2
1d10 ⇒ 8

HD for a Ranger

3 levels at once: 3d10 ⇒ (4, 2, 4) = 10

EDIT: Are we considered 5th-level as far as how many feats we've acquired and the like? Or is the NPC level just a bonus level that doesn't count for anything other than HD, Class Skills, and Skill points?

I'll go ahead and withdraw, if that's ok. Core races are kind of boring to me (I GM a lot, so I am always having to make and play core race NPCs). I was kind of hoping to dust off a previously made character who was in a game that died, but all my previous characters either wouldn't fit, or aren't allowed by race. Thank you anyway.

Thank you for asking that question. I was going to address that after selection, but it's best to do it now.

The NPC does not count for anything but HD, class skills, skill point totals, saves and BAB. It does not count towards feat or when ability stat bonuses apply.

It's simply giving a little character boost showing that you had a life before focusing your attention on your adventuring class.
