Baldwin the Merciful's: Razor Coast (Inactive)

Game Master baldwin the merciful

The Razor Coast has drawn men to madness and slaughter since the world was young. Tulita natives, born from the same fire as this jagged coast, claim the Razor existed long before the world’s other lands. It is a crucible of flame cooled by the ocean’s caress and its mountains, reefs, and lightless depths teem with as many terrors as lustrous spoils. The Razor bucks the trappings of civilization in much the same manner the storm-tossed sea spurns the men who dare mount her. This is no place for the weak-willed. Untested souls are food for its storms, its fickle gods, its ancient spirits, and the evil predations of unfathomable creatures. No less dangerous are the men who make the coast their home and whose dark desires put most horrors to shame.

Thank you guys for the congrats and I hope wherever you all game you have a great time, too!

Well after striking it rich in the Razor Coast the group's drunken barbarian has decided to settle down with his home-brew still, named Clarisse, and retire from adventuring. That means we are looking to add a new front liner to join the group. If you are are interested in a fast paced, consistent game we have a spot open.

Note this is game that will not suddenly disappear from the boards, I'm a dedicated DM and I expect the same out of my players. We all get along and we communicate, both in the game and in the discussion thread. This should be obvious since the game has nearly 10,000 posts since July 2014. This is fun game and the pace, depth of character development and complexity of battles is probably unlike anything you've experienced on the PbP forum.

Game-wise it's a 50-50% roleplay/rollplay game. The characters are deeply developed in the game context. Anyone applying don't worry about a vast background, a few interesting facts will be all you need, then I'll incorporate that into the game. Your posting history and ability to keep up with a game that averages 40+ posts in day is more important to me than detailed history.

The ideal candidate would be: barbarian, fighter, cavalier or swashbuckler type. I don't have Unchained and I don't use ACG, so that material is not permitted.

We follow the rules but if you are a rules lawyer or feel a propensity to try to prove yourself right all the time, please don't apply.

Current party make-up:

Astri - Bard
Chell - cleric of Quell
Embri - Witch
Sorrin - fighter/rogue

Note: the characters are well balanced but not optimized. There is more to the game than just mass amounts of damage and the inability to get hit.

Point Buy 20, plus your 4th level Stat bonus
No score below a 10, before racial adjustment.

Traits: 1 trait from the APG and 1 trait from Skull & Shackles

The base begins: 1 level of either aristocrat, expert or warrior. Consider this your pre-adventuring life. This is a way to give players a small HD, skill, and save bonus. It does not count towards feat or when ability stat bonuses apply. It's simply giving a little character boost showing that you had a life before focusing your attention on your adventuring class.

You begin with 1 NPC level and 7 Class levels. Assuming you stay with the game you should get to around 15th level by the conclusion.

Starting wealth: 23,500 gp. You can have no more than 11,000 GP in any one item. When in doubt ask.

Alignment: No real alignment restrictions, except you must work well together. The party is CG to NG in tendency.

Hit Points: Max HP’s for your NPC level and class level one, thereafter you roll HPs. Reroll 1’s.

Ability scores and Skills: Explain how you arrive at your ability scores and skill totals. This makes it easy for me, so I do not have to deconstructive builds.

Second Wind: Every character gets the innate ability to heal themselves 1d4+1 HP, 2/day, as a standard action.

Develop a brief description/background: I know many players spend a lot of time creating their background, and as a DM I respect that, and try to incorporate some (not all) links into the game. However, what matters more to me as a DM is your posting history. I do read game threads and I will see if there a history of vanishing from games. That being said, if you are new to PBP I do encourage you to submit a character – I was new once too. I have been known to choose some relatively inexperienced player(s), as I feel this helps to pay it forward.

Adult Themed: This will be adult themed, but well within Paizo's PBP standards. When in doubt put it behind a spoiler.

I’m looking for a player that can work with others together and post more than a simple line, or two, of dice stats – descriptive actions will make it enjoyable to read. I try to be descriptive in my posting.

Lastly take a look at the game's Campaign Information Tab, there is a lot of information contained there.

This is the party's witch, just checking in on the thread. :)

With 3 non-martial women and 1 male fighter-type, we could certainly use another guy to be his flanking buddy to assist in close combat battles.

Please take note Baldwin isn't exaggerating about the fast-paced posting, we all post A LOT.

In game we're currently finishing up some loose ends on land and then we'll probably be purchasing a nice ship and taking to the sea soon. To quote Baldwin on the setting of the campaign:

Baldwin wrote:
If I were to approximate how much is in each area 40% water, 35% urban, 25% jungle. that can fluctuate by as much as 5 to 10% based on which path you all decide to travel. These are all estimates.

So you may want someone adapted to both land and sea.

As for the character, as Embri said a melee-focused character is preferred to keep the nasties away and flank with Sorrin so he can get those sweet sweet sneak attacks in. Heavy armor or anything with a high armor check penalty may not be a great idea on the sea, but if you have the right enchantments/materials you might be able to get away with not sinking in full plate.

Looking forward to everyone's submissions! If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Some of us are very talkative and on occasion, during battle we may post up to several times a day.

To follow up on what Astri mentioned regarding the campaign environment. The group just finished a swamp environment that they hope never to return to. I think at this point forward the breakdown will be closer to 50% urban, 40% water, 10% rural. This game is very sandboxy so those numbers depend on how the characters choose to proceed.

No... never, ever going back to that swamp. ....Unless there's more buried treasure.

Mutt, here... Fighter 4/Rogue 3... and considering adding Ranger to the mix.

That said, don't worry about stepping on my toes unless you're 5ft-stepping for a flank!

Good RP and tactics appreciated. Come one, come all!

Dotting. Thinking barbarian or ranger. Very busy this week (our largest fundraiser of the year) and then next week I'm out of town, so this may not be the right time depending on GM Baldwin's timeline, but I'll try and get my hat into the ring.

Shadow Lodge

Love Razor Coast and would jump at the chance to tackle it from a PbP standpoint. I tried running Skull and Shackles with my home group and it was very difficult for them once we got to the end of book 1 and the ship stuff started coming into play, which is one of the aspects I love.

I'll take some time and look as the current members, examine how the game flows, and come up with something asap. I wouldn't do the application justice if I didn't do some homework first to make sure it had the right feel for my play style. I do tend to get rabid with my posting and I'm always impatient when the games I am running or playing in bog down, so you can definitely count on me to drive along with a high posting rate. Thats a dream game for me. :)

More to come soon!

Would you be willing to allow the mutation fighter from ACG?

I r te clarik. I mak frends hert les. I somtims atak but not gud. I mak frends atak beter. Miny spels.

We just got finished with a 16 round battle that shows the perfect example of what not to do and how disorganized we still are after only knowing each other for 9 days in game time.

Sorry, I'm not taking anything from the ACG.

They are still working on the "teamwork" aspect of being together. That being said, you can see how smoothly this game functions on the PbP boards in an extremely complex battle. Many of the battles that I run can last 10 + rounds in length and you can see how I move the story and action forward.

Oh yeah, one thing about the NPC levels (unless I'm wrong, then please correct me Baldwin). They do not count towards your skill caps. For instance, Astrianna is an Aristocrat 1/Bard 7, and her skill cap is at 7 points as if she was only a level 7 bard.

That is correct.

I'm willing to make some dreams come true. :-)

this almost seems the place for my slowly becoming famous barbarian bare-knuckle Muay-Thai pit fighter.

I do believe Embri would know who I am talking about.... ;)

funny thing is... I looked at who has left and this would be an almost duplicate replacement. maybe a different personality though

I do have a question on the NPC class thing

we would get the skill points, HP, and the save bonus correct?

how about BAB? also would that be max HP or rolled?

Shadow Lodge

Must.. resist the urge to submit character ideas...

well hello Mr DB3

Yes...give in to the urge...no one can stop you...its the internet.

I just want a male though, too many girls already. Sorrin might die if we all sync up at that time....

Shadow Lodge

Will Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Dang.

Dric Ghawn the Halfling "strong man".

Gip, the goblin. Hilarious to play, no matter his class.

Tik-Tik the Pseudodragon. Commonly an Alchemist, but lately Arcane Bomber or Transmuter Wizard.

Ray Remiar the farm boy turned unwilling adventurer when his village thought he'd deliberately summoned a demon(it was a fiendish riding dog).

Álmos, a God Caller of Chakacoatl, an ancient lesser God of life, reptiles, and rebirth

well looks like supposed to roll HP so here we go:

hp: 7d12 ⇒ (12, 11, 2, 7, 9, 12, 6) = 59

Embrianna wrote:

Dang well my chances may have dropped a little.

oh well I'll still submit if not selected than that's ok

You get +1 BAB if you choose warrior. Max HP for npc level and level one, roll for remaining HP. Amusingly you filled Mac HP for you first level hp anyway.

Yes you get BAB bonus, if any, from the NPC class. It is max HP for the NPC class, Max HP for level 1, then roll HP thereafter. Reroll any 1's. It does not count towards feat or when ability stat bonuses progression.

It's simply giving a little character boost showing that you had a life before focusing your attention on your adventuring class.

Thanks Astri, I did some digging in past posts and found much of that but it is appreciated that my findings are confirmed correct

do I get Con bonus for the NPC level HP?

edit thank you Mr GM as well.

you are all so helpful

all I need to decide is a name, and maybe a theme song?

Some interesting ideas for another game but they we are looking to replace a player with another front line fighter type.

I often give relatively new players an opportunity to join the game, even if there is not much of a posting history to go by, but as long as there is commitment to maintain the posting rate. Most of my players at one time fit into that category, now they have thousands of poststo their credit. That being said, if you do have a posting history, I spend a considerable amount of time reading those games an applicant is/has been apart of. I'm looking for communication, unexplained disappearance, abandonment of games, depth of role play, along with whether you can keep pace. To me those items tell me more about the player than any character concept can divulge.

I still have some spending money as I did not get any ranged weapons but I wanted to see how things pan out first anyway.

Also If you have questions on my posting history just ask. as I have several games that are actually multiple threads for the same game

Like Dric, a Halfling that smashes faces with anything he can pick up? Chakacoatl, pouncing Diety? Lobo Gris, the giant demon/angel wolf? ;)

Or are they wanting an actual Fighter classed character?

Quoting Baldwin: The ideal candidate would be: barbarian, fighter, cavalier or swashbuckler type.

If I were to make a cavalier, could I sub my mount for a hipogriff or another aquatic beat? Or does most of the combat take place on land?

I forgot to link the initial build requirements, obviously applicants are starting at a higher level 1 NPC/7 class and have more coin to spend. Sorry for the confusion.

Original Recruitment Post

*permitted Races, classes, and books

Just recently started playing pbp, but have been an active gamer since 1979. If you look at my posting history this past couple of weeks, I think you'll see that I keep up with what ever pace the group takes. I'm a desk-jockey, so getting several posts between 8-5pm is quite easy.

I'll get a concept together today, and get it posted.

Here is rough breakdown on the game environment.

It's only been 9 days of game time, things are very calendar oriented and the entire campaign take roughly 60 game days, or so, to complete.

So far combat has been taken on land in water/swamp and on a couple ships.

I'm going to leave this open for a few days. I'll provide at least 12 hours notice before I close the re-recruitment. Note that I may not limit myself to just one new character, I may add a second depending on the fit.

Ah, missed that. Enjoy your game then. ^^

Rolling for hitpoints...

6d10 ⇒ (9, 10, 3, 10, 8, 2) = 42

HP: 6d12 ⇒ (11, 11, 5, 5, 5, 4) = 41

Well, not the best, but it could have been much worse.

I submit Khair bin Jharif for consideration. Stats, description, and a short backstory can be found in my profile for the character. While I am used to playing characters that are a little more skill based, I thought a beefy meat shield/damage sponge might compliment this group the best.

A little about myself and my posting habits. I'm typically online between 6am and 6pm EST and tend to post a lot during those times, or as much as my current games will keep up with. I'm far less active after 6pm and have reached out to Baldwin on that aspect. I only recently returned to PbP a month or so ago after taking a year off due to a job change, getting married, and handling all the lovely associated things that go along with that.

As I was looking at the current party members and the gameplay itself I realized that I share a PbP game with Chell, who would recognize me as Adakos. Hopefully that, as well as my posts, can speak to my playstyle.

Thanks for considering me!

As a question, you say no ACG, yet are listing a swashbuckler as one of the options. Are Swashbuckler's from the ACG allowed?

Well, he didn't actually mention Swashbuckler as a class, he said: "swashbuckler type". Which could just be referencing the style of fighting that we are searching for.

This looks really good.

Presenting Benbow.

*NOTE* Benbow makes use of Pirates of the Inner Sea (Freebooter Archetype) and Heroes of the Wild (gnome alt. traits). All information available on d20PSFRD

Race: Gnome

Class: Former Merchant(expert) turned Freebooter (ranger) following a pirate attack.

Yup a Gnome Martial w/o a mount. I swear this can be done or if it can't I swear the failure will be pretty.

Campaign Trait: Native

Currently build is focused on TWF with a hookhammer. Freebooters bane and Freebooters bond do a good deal of heavy lifting here. And it should help with the combat disorganization mentioned. If the party stays tight and focused the bonuses really start to add up.
In addition I am trying to add in every Gnome-centric trait and feat I can squeeze in. Benbow can function on both sea and land, next level he gets and aquatic version of Woodland stride which will serve quite well. Not to mention the favored terrains and spells.

Personality: Benbow is gnome centric. Not in a very small white pointy hood way but in the "It is a pity you were not born a gnome" way. He would argue that Shakespeare sounds better in the original Gnomish for example. He does not dislike other races but he considers gnomes as by far the best. His current ambition is to prove gnomish superiority by becoming the greatest pirate/privateer/adventurer the world has ever seen.

Possible hooks: Exactly what happened to that first ship? Are the pirates in question still out there? Benbow spent time as a pirate, is someone looking for revenge/legal recourse/their share of the loot?
