Best quick and easy thing I can come up with is that some were hallucinations from a few mushrooms you used to flavor up your rations.
and Tamnir Allefort is sick with blackscour taint and went to town.

Unless you want a stealthy predator roaming the place.

After a long look around the empty courtyard, Bertrand follows Barnabus back in and approaches the shrine's doors. He'll quietly open them far enough to peek inside, paying special attention to the ceiling.

Bertrand steps back into the doorway himself, dropping his bow and quickdrawing his axe. He readies himself to strike at anything attacking him.


I would keep the bow, as they fly, and tend to get the "drop" on people.
