Rocks fall, everyone dies

Inubrix: I'll allow it. We'll treat it as a hostile Swallow Whole. Roll it as a grapple attempt, but you can use Dex instead of Str if you can get to Tiny or smaller. If you succeed, you'll be able to attack him from inside with total cover and without retaliation (other than minor stomach damage).

active: see post HP 151/151; AC 28 (26 currently); DR 15/-; FH 14 Psion 5 / Metamorph 7 / Worm that Walks CR+2

Alrighty, here goes.

Swift action metamorphosis (last PP-free one of the day)
Standard Action try to get in its belly
If successful, move action to draw X-laser.

Metamorphosis options chosen:
EMC: +6 DEX
EMC: two choices from B-level
- two size decreases (now tiny)
- +4 STR

Rocks fall, everyone dies

Inubrix, if you fire that thing next round, I'm gonna randomly roll to see what else it hits.

active: see post HP 151/151; AC 28 (26 currently); DR 15/-; FH 14 Psion 5 / Metamorph 7 / Worm that Walks CR+2

i figured something like that would go down. I was hoping to be able to roll to aim blindly at the big demon's square from inside the toad demon

Rocks fall, everyone dies

Haha Drisquar you hit those guys' SR exactly, which means the lightning bolt goes through.

Still waiting on Round 3 actions from Anaxian, Big Anaxian, Drisquar, and Illia- (who is currently facing both a Katpaskir and a summoned Nalfeshnee)

With 50 movement halved, and a reach weapon, I think I can aim that at the Katpaskir within 30 ft. If not, aim it at tubby dispel demon.

If anyone wants to reduce the heat on me by taking out this Nelfan... Nefeeyshy... The fat demon behind me, that'd be nice. I'm only 800 feet forward from your position and 200 high, so no smoke or walls should be obscuring my position.

Was waiting to see what the results of the lightning bold were, as in its effectiveness

Rocks fall, everyone dies

Oh, right. Just looked it up... apparently most high-level demons are immune to lightning.

Drisquar's lightning bolt hits a few of the flying demons, but they seem entirely unaffected by it.

@Drisquar: The flying demons appear to be entirely a flock of vrocks.

@Drisquar: I hope you like Mirror Image, Unavoidable DoTs, and Telekinesis.

Above, the small body of Anaxian circled invisibly, triangulating for both the blind Woundwyrm, and the Magma Drake who was underground. The others in the group were linked into the telepathic network and able to listen in on Anaxian's conversation with himself, but it was very strange.

Straight ahead two body lengths and up five there are areas of reversed gravity here and here incoming from above three demons six body lengths away vrocks near my location we should prioritize them soon to free up Drisquar to run interference make sure the lava pulls in your wake.

It was clear they were all talking to each other, but their mind-voices sounded the same. It was like a schizophrenic internal monologue. A stream of consciousness multi-faceted tactical analysis that used three different body sizes and three different facings as frames of reference. Somehow, they never got confused.

Drawing a scroll case and a spell component pouch, dropping both to the Woundwyrm. Then flying near to the Vrocks

The Woundwyrm caught the case and the pouch, immediately cracking open the scroll case and reading it. It burned to dust and the dragon's terrible wounds vanished.

Scroll of Heal. I take 10 on UMD to cast it. :)

167/167 HP, Temp HP:, DR 10/Magic, Immune to Cold, Electricity and Fire, SR 21, Fort +20, Ref +14, Will +20, Smite 2/2, Blast 3/3, Recon 10/10, 1st level spells 4/4, Active Effects: Smoking Bottle, Evil Aura, Cowardice Aura, Desecrate Aura, Greater Magic Fang, Longstrider, Linebreaker, Ant Haul

Below the lava, Anaxian surged forward, guided from above. He burrowed through the stone dragging lava in his wake. He angled downward as much as he could until his burrowing had him scraping along the subterranean Wall of Force, the pressure of the pool of lava filling in all the space behind him and around him.

Then he sharply angled upward, surfacing below a group of demons. He erupted from the ground with a horrible otherworldly roar, soaring into the air like a smoking, fiery shark breaching to grab unsuspecting prey. He came up below the Glabrezu, tackling the demon and dragging it downward. The arc of his flight left a spout of magma and a trail of smoke behind him as he dove back down to the pools of lava and vanished beneath the surface again.

So this is a little complicated. I'm using Burrow, Stunning Irruption on any demons still on the ground as I exit, Bull Rushing the non-mirror-imaged Glabrezu to push it out of it's Reverse Gravity area and back down into the Lava, then Flyby attack to finish the dive into burrowing again. If possible I'd like to land on the Glabrezu.

Total movement used: 20 feet of burrowing, and 100-ish feet of flying.

I'm not sure how high I can get my lava spout as I exit the ground, but if I can get it into the reverse gravity area below the Mirror imaged one, that would be awesome.

Bull Rush,with linebreaker: 1d20 + 27 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 27 + 2 = 46 This is against it's flat footed CMD unless it can see through my smoke.

Since I fly, the Reverse Gravity area shouldn't really bother me beyond having to reversing my flight orientation and riding it to my target (like a dive-bomb from below, I guess), but just in case here's a fly check and my Fort save against the effect.

Reflex: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29
Fly: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (3) + 24 = 27

Any demons on the ground within 20 feet of where I exit must make a DC 22 Fort Save or be Stunned. Those that make it are Shaken for 1d3 rounds.

There were only three druids. They're all tossed! But Raxus isn't high enough up to see much yet.

Pala can act as fire support, correcting his aim by degrees after the first shot. I'd imagine they've done this before.

Raxus picked up a barrel and waited for Pala's first shot. He could use the knight's arrows to paint his target area.

or, if that teleporty demon is visible in the air, I'd love to hit it with a barrel of holy water.

Rocks fall, everyone dies

Teleporty demon is on the ground, next to Illia-, but there's also a much larger-target Nalfeshnee on the other side of her.

Raxus picked up a barrel of anti demon explosives, lit the fuse and tossed it at the big one near the winged lady.

this is a full sized barrel of black powder and cold iron sling bullets. I'm using the stats for a Bomb fired from a Catipult. A direct hit deals 6d6 bludgeoning, and then the explosion deals 6d6 piercing and bludgeoning to everything within 30 feet, DC 20 reflex for half.

Does that sound about right to you?

Rocks fall, everyone dies

Yeah. Raxus needs to make a targeting roll, though.

V: 56/56, W: 74/74, Temp HP 18, AC 17*, Fort +11*, Ref +9, Will +10*, Rage 23/23 , Power 9/9, Psi 7/7, Active Effects: Bull Strength

Ranged Touch Attack, power attack: 1d20 + 19 - 3 ⇒ (19) + 19 - 3 = 35

Direct damage (bludgeoning, Cold Iron), two handed strength and power attack (from Hurling): 6d6 + 15 + 9 ⇒ (4, 6, 4, 5, 1, 2) + 15 + 9 = 46
DC 25 Reflex for half (as per Hurling)
Penetrating Damage applies Cold Iron to barrel

Indirect damage (bludgeoning and piercing): 6d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 2, 1, 1, 4) = 18
All within 30 feet, DC 20 Reflex for half.

I'm not sure how far away Raxus is, but the range increment on these barrels is 200 feet.

Rocks fall, everyone dies

Nalfeshnee can be quite tough to hit; but at the extreme distance, the demon never sees the shots coming, as a barrel of gunpowder and a number of holy arrows fly into it, banishing it back to the lower plane it came from.

Noticing the lack of effect his lightning had, Drisquar, still in wind form, rapidly flees into the smoke and vanishes. Figured without an action, Drisquar will re-stealth, which might be better than getting swarmed by a dozen Vrocks.

Inubrix disappears into one of the Hezrou, which coughs and gags in surprise.

Round 3, allies:
Jiator's hill has now grown to 30' high.

Siabrae 1 disappears back under the lava, perhaps in an attempt to catch a new group of demons by surprise.

Siabrae 2 swims to square E2, dragging demons through the lava behind it. Unable to immediately reach him on top of his rocks, it waggles its tentacles menacingly at Anaxian's meatsuit Woundwyrm, preparing perhaps to strike or cast a spell.

Siabrae 3 moves into the deep smoke, disappearing from view.

Rocks fall, everyone dies

GM rolls:

Stomach: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9

Glab fort: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (20) + 18 = 38
Splash: 10d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 3, 5, 4, 1, 6, 1, 2) = 33

Inubrix's square:

The demons in Inubrix's square stand around for a few seconds, blinking, and wondering if the huge creature really did get swallowed so easily once its size was dispelled. The locust demon laughs, briefly, a scratching, grinding sound, until the Nalfeshnee slaps it across the face, peering around through the rubble.

Inubrix takes 9 points of acid damage from the ooze that seeps through the inside of the creature's mouth and throat.

Anaxian's Woundwyrm square:

The Glabrezu, surrounded by its mirror images, calls out to Anaxian telepathically. ::Marnaugh!:: it cries in a mental voice undercut with pain, ::Leap over the walls and devour our attackers! Honor your contract with Shaorhaz today, and you will be rewarded by Deskari himself!::

Big Anaxian's square:

Anaxian successfully bull-rushes the un-mirrored Glabrezu out of the gravity field, though it steadies itself in the air, landing with a crash that lights its legs on fire but does not completely envelop it. Both Glabrezus respond by firing Unholy Blight spells at Anaxian, who is completely unharmed. The Hezrou fires a similarly useless Blasphemy spell.

Anaxian, because you're facing towards the lava again, DC 27 Will save or blinded for round 4.

By Illia-:

The Katpaskir shouts something unknown in Abyssal, and throws a crystal at the ground, which shatters; Illia- and the creature are suddenly enveloped in darkness, as a crystal hemisphere 50' in radius rises over them.

Several demons consolidate, and some smoke clears. The flock of Vrocks have now risen high enough to be visible to the crusaders (though their swirling movements make it hard to pick out individual targets, providing partial cover against ranged attacks).

I'm in D3 invisible. I need some input to be able to make an informed action. Do the demons appear to be able to see through the smoke or are they fumbling around?

Edit: Actually, regardless meridian takes action, but weather or not they can see is going to be relevant soon.

Meridian flicks her hand and 9 of the unattended weapons that the largest weaponry pull themselves free and fly at one of the demons. Meridian becomes visible in the process, but maintains a look of unconcern.

To hit:
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14

to confirm the one crib 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31

Damage is going to be dependent on how many hit and what the weapons were. Standard damage with no strength bonus. Hence i'd be choosing whatever weapons were the largest. Large great swords(for example) would do 3d6 each plus whatever enchantments they had.

The following is a mental conversation that takes no real actions, but mid-battle is definitely an awkward time for it. I put it in spoilers to keep from detracting too much.

After telekinetically flinging some weaponry Meridian has a thought.

To Anaxian, but she's broadcasting to the group as a whole:

"Anaxian, "

"Do these goodly types we find ourself in the company of seem a bit more than ... I'm not sure what to call it. Just more than they should be. They seem a bit too impressive is all. It makes me wonder. Perhaps they've tapped into something we're as yet unaware of. "

Technically i'm talking about mythic, but as we don't know what that is i'm keeping it vague.

In almost the same mental "breath" meridian shifts to a completely separate idea.

"Oh, Also I had an idea for a fortification/weapon that we can use in the future. I'm going to run some calculations and see how many brick-shaped stones I can permanently animate using Herman (The permanently anthropomorphic elephant simulacra-blood slave she keeps chained up in the basement for this exact reason. If it sounds ridiculous it's because it is). Basically my thought is that if I make enough of them I can imbue them with flight and the ability to follow simple instructions (as part of animate objects+permanency). Then I can form them into a wall with instructions to pummel anyone/anything that gets too close, reforming into a wall afterwards of course. Further, I can bring them with me as a floating platform/engine of destruction. It'll be so much fun. Pitty I didn't think of it earlier. It would certainly make this fight go faster. You're smart. Can you think of any way to make it better? "

If there was anyone well suited to having complicated conversations while in the middle of stressful combat, it was Anaxian. He simply shuffled the conversation off onto his autonomous spirit-duplicates.

Telepathic broadcast
Now is not the ideal time for my analysis. I have only two minds able to focus on your idea rather than my full compliment. However, I can say that your plan has merit. I have three thoughts.

The first would be liberal use of Symbol spells and their like, placed on one face of the bricks. When the right stimulus was given, the bricks could turn themselves to reveal or hide the symbols.

Second, constructing them out of Adamantine, Cold Iron or Silver would increase their versatility as weapons.

Third, there is a type of construct originally developed by the mage-kings of ancient Thassilon called a Rune Guardian. They are relatively inexpensive, autonomous, and designed to work together as part of a collective. The bricks could be made in such a way to house a Rune Guardian, wearing them essentially like armor.

Still invisible and triangulating for his counterparts, Anaxian's original body, possessed by the mind of his Phylactery, circled above the fight, considering it's options.

He retrieved the ring of braided iron and silver from around his wrist and enlarged it to it's full six foot diameter. Drawing my demon-binding ring and dismissing the Shrink spell on it.

At the same time he used his tail to draw a metal rod from his stomach pouch.
Drawing an Immovable Rod.

The eyeless wyrm flew around the demon who'd addressed it, it's blind head tilted towards the hellspawned monster. Then without warning it opened it's maw and released a pressurized blast of acid.

I'd like to line up my 100 foot Line breath weapon to catch the Glabrezu and as many other demons as I can. I'll let you figure out which ones are hit.

Rocks fall, everyone dies

In the interest of moving things along, here's the next round; if Counterpoint Gopher, Ellsuana, and Raxus want to take retroactive Round 4 actions, they can do so (for double volleys) because enemies are far enough away that it shouldn't matter.

Rolls:

Meredian damage: 9d10 ⇒ (5, 7, 7, 3, 4, 10, 4, 3, 8) = 51
Glab dam: 20d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 5, 4, 6, 4, 4, 1, 3, 1, 2, 6, 1, 6, 6, 3, 5, 6, 2, 5) = 77
Glab swim: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29

Round 4, wrapup

Meredian lands some decent hits, against a few scrawny and already-injured demons. Unfortunately, most of her weapon throws fail to cut through the creatures' damage resistance, and only one of them is actually brought down.

Anaxian manages to knock the summoned Glabrezu further into the lava; it thrashes about, but manages to free itself quickly, though still on fire and heavily injured as it drips molten rock from its shoulders, burning new grooves into its scaled skin.

Anaxian, remind me of what your "Demon-Binding Ring" is? Is it just a Magic Circle?

Biggest Anaxian manages to strike both the Glabrezu and its mirror images, and the creature collapses, its corpse falling out of the sky, images disappearing on impact with the ground. In a neighboring square, a second Glabrezu is hit by the acid, though a third one dodges out of the line of attack.

Drisquar sinks his blade into one of the Vrocks, but the creature pulls free and continues flying, dripping blood through the air.

Sir Pala Din, with a Bane Enhancement on his bow from the mysterious occultist, just barely manages to pick one Vrock out of the cloud, which falls, still conscious but unable to fly on prickled wings, to crash and break on the ruins of the fortress below.

Rocks fall, everyone dies

Inubrix, you forgot to roll your Vital Strike damage (you can vital strike while grappled, as far as I can tell) so I'll just assume average. And dear lord that was a great roll.

Maybe it's skill, or maybe it's luck, but Inubrix lines up his shot perfectly, and the X-laser hums with energy, overloading its circuits into a massive, fortunate blast. The laser cuts straight through the Hezrou's chest, spilling blood through the hole where its heart pumped seconds earler, and striking the Nalfeshnee with enough force to bring it down as well. The laser manages to clip the nearby horse demon as well, burning off part of its face, and causing the badly-injured creature enough pain to collapse, unconscious, into the smouldering rubble.

In the neighboring square B2, two more Hezrou are hit, both collapsing under their own weight and instantly unsummoning; in square B3, the hole bores straight through the wing of a flying Nalfeshnee, the pig-demon shrieking as it falls directly onto a bank of spiked ironwork.

Inubrix, you're now trapped inside the dead body of a Hezrou, and will need to cut, squirm, or burst your way out...

Perception (DC 30 Inubrix, DC 45 anyone else):
The lava-elemental Siabrae has shifted under the largest nearby patch of demons, and now seems to be rumbling under Inubrix's feet... it might be a good idea to get out of his way, fast.

Rocks fall, everyone dies

Round 4, allies

Despite biggest Anaxian's sudden betrayal of the nearby Glabrezu, the Siabrae (2) in his square seems a bit slow on the uptake, and lashes out at him with several of its tentacles, which clatter harmlessly off the ancient beast's calcified scales.

The other visible Siabrae moves through lava, looking for new demons to fight.

Jiator's platform rises to 40'.

Inubrix's Square:

The three demons left near Inubrix back away slowly, unsure of why half their fellows were just murdered by a blinding ray of off-color sunlight.

Big Anaxian's Square:

The flying Coloxus demons from a neighboring square reach Anaxian. The large dragon is targeted with two separate Mind Fog clouds, which his antipaladin training allows him to easily shrug off.

The nearby Glabrezu and Hezrou, perhaps sensing the impossibility of escape from the dragon, instead turn to strike back, lashing out with claws and spines. And while none of the hits break through his armor, the Hezrou does manage to grapple him in its claws.

Meredian's Square:

The remaining four demons jump and swing at the flying Meredian with no success, hurling insults as well. But the Nalfeshnee instead begins to chant, casting a Feeblemind spell which yep, you guessed it, has no effect on the mentally-defensive dark elf.

Illia-'s Area:

::So you can't fly away!:: the Katpaskir shouts, lunging forwards. And then there is a great tearing sound, and the demon suddenly compresses into a single point, and then vanishes.

::The Gate summons trap worked,:: Sir John's voice informs the party telepathically, moments later. ::We're strengthening his binding circles now, but you should be free to teleport safely.::

Way up in the sky:

The flock of Vrocks turns, suddenly, and in a single motion all begin flying at rapid speed towards the party of crusaders, ending the round 400' away, but clearly visible as targets.

Drisquar: you can make an AoO. The Vrocks aerial ran, and are now 200' away from you.

Int DC 22, Drisquar or crusaders only (use a guess for crusader int if you want):
The Vrocks are clearly flying in some sort of practiced formation, which appears to keep one specific Vrock in the center at all times.

And the battle is...

A1: NW corner of fortress. No signs of movement visible.
A2: Only rubble.
A3: Three demons, a Glabrezu and two Coloxus (the Glabrezu injured and surrounded by five mirror images) hover 50 feet above the ground. Part of a structure still stands, into which a second glabrezu has crashed, lava lapping at its feet. A Hezrou on the ground has successfully grappled Anaxian. Big Anaxian is here, in midair
A4: Only rubble.
A5: Only rubble.

B1: Three demons, standing in confusion at Inubrix’s disappearance. Inubrix is here
B2: Only rubble.
B3: Mind Fog (DC 21) fills this square. Siabrae 1 was last seen here
B4: Only rubble.
B5: Only rubble.

C1: Only rubble.
C2: Part of the inner structure still stands, though slowly sinking into lava. Eleven Vrocks appear to have escaped from it, now just over 100 feet up into the air. (A - 40)
C3: A sizable portion of the inner structure still stands, with no demons visible Siabrae 3 is here
C4: Only rubble.
C5: Obscured by smoke. (Fogcutting: an abyssal Retriever construct scans the area around itself, no longer on fire but unable to see through the smoke)

D1: No lava in this square; nine figures of various size appear to cast spells, protected by a Resilient Sphere.
D2: Two Glabrezu demons stand back-to-back, one of them clearly summoned.
D3: Fogcutting: four demons continue rifling through this portion of the rubble for weaponry. One summoned Glabrezu is attempting to rally them, surrounded by 6 mirror images. Meredian is flying here
D4: Only rubble.
D5: Obscured by heavy smoke. (Fogcutting: Only rubble)

E1: The bubbling has settled. Only rubble
E2: Only rubble. Small Anaxian is in a Woundwyrm here. [b]Siabrae 2 is here, erroneously attacking Anaxian
E3: Only rubble.
E4: Only rubble.
E5: Only rubble.

Most of the smoke has now cleared. Party up! Some crusaders may get double actions if I skipped them.

Counterpoint Gopher's familiar definitely doesn't rip off Anaxian with a Enlarge Arcane Concordance, while Counterpoint Gopher activates a readied dimension door to appear 1800 feet above the fortress, after the Katpaskir is removed from play. Any crusaders who want to come along may do so, and have feather fall cast on them afterwards if they so desire it.

Now in striking position and falling 60 ft a round, Counterpoint Gopher unleashes one of his personal Telekinesis uses, just to be sure, to eliminate the Coloxus demons.
