they keep the tourist areas really nice, but the other areas not so much.

the traffic is terrible, because there are only 3 highways. and in many cases, their idea of a "highway" is two lanes. then the president visits (several times a year), whatever highway he is on is closed in the direction he is going (so half of one of the three highways is closed, you can imagine how much trouble that causes). any big event like a big football game or the honolulu marathon shuts the roads down too with traffic. couple all that with the fact that no one here can drive, and the whole thing is just a nightmare. i live 20 minutes from work if there is no traffic, but i consider any day that there is only one crash on my way to work a good day. 2 crashes avg in the 13-mile stretch between where i live and where i work. only 4 of those 13 miles are highway.

If you aren't an ethnic hawaiian or some variety of asian, there is a lot of bias against you (especially if you are white) coming from the ethnic hawaiians. they have this sort of "reverse racism" thing going on. officially, i have only seen it manifest as certain housing areas where you must have verifiable ethnic hawaiian ancestry to rent/buy a home. unofficially, good luck going into "local bars/clubs", which will be defended in a very tribal and territorial manner by large ethnic hawaiian men. while on the beach i even had a woman come up to me claiming i was ogling her (while my wife was right next to me) in an attempt to get her "brothers" to come over and fight me).

this is a sweeping generalization based on my tainted personal experience, but i have found the local people largely to be poorly educated and boorish. the people you interact with in the tourism or hospitality industry will usually be very nice, but a large number around where i live (and i took pains not to live in one of the bad areas) are laughably terrible. for instance, my neighbors had some kids playing in a shared yard area behind our houses. the kids were being really loud, and my wife went out back to tell them to quiet down several times. she eventually told them that if she has to come out again, the police will be called (their noise level was well above acceptable levels as dictated in the noise ordinance). I was a kid once, i "get" playing loud, but it was too much and too close to our back window. ten or twenty minutes later, we get a couple knocking at our door complaining about us threatening to call the cops on their kids. we explained the situation, and the mother's argument was "they can be as loud as they want until 10pm" (false, noise ordinance just gets more strict after 10pm) and the father's argument was "they were here first" (which shows me just how unwanted my kind is here).

the weather (tropical) is very nice, but personally i do also like winter (read: snow) and going several years without winter (except when i travel during winter to somewhere that has winter) is a bummer for me.

and on top of all that, as expensive as it is to visit hawaii, it isn't much cheaper to live there.

granted, these experiences were on OAHU. I have been to the big island, and i didn't feel quite so ostracized there.

Don't let that ruin your trip though, because hawaii is truly an AWESOME place to visit. If you are coming to Oahu, i can maybe recommend some tasty places to eat or nice places to go have some fun.

Yeah in the several visits I've made to Oahu I've always enjoyed it, always family vacations so I've never had to drive but I can see how the bumper to bumper traffic could get annoying day in day out.

I've also read and spoken to people on the island about the state of poverty that is there, I've had people tell me that I could get a job there with ease because I'm a midwesterner and actually have a strong work ethic whereas a lot of the natives have the laid back and lazy island mentality.

Also its bizzare that there has been such a violent rise in successionist views in Hawaii especially considering the overall lack of education. But to be fair, America did overthrow an existing monarchy, though I don't understand how there can still be what amounts to racist state laws still in affect more than a hundred years later.

I do look forward to the weather though as I am in minnesota right now and it is -43 below 0 F with windchill.

Your in Minnesota too? I thought that I was the only one enjoying are warm balmy early January -43* temperature. Im in the mplp burbs.

ah yeah, i loved last winter when i got out of hawaii and went to Korea, it might not have been -40 , but definitely -30 to -40 with wind chill in the winter. thick coat and stiff drinks are all that can stop it.

The whole northern US is the same way. Part of the fun. :D

Just giving you all a heads up, just spent the past day and half in the hospital. Even though I took extra care with the crazy cold I ended up with the bronchitis. Add having smoked for 23 years and quit 8 days ago.. My lungs and such are going crazy. Im still inpatient,at the va here. No clue how long its going to take me to kick this. But like I said doc said maybe discharge me tomorrow.

To the best off my offhand knowledge you guys have either 10 or 12 BP, if you count the 2bp worth of gemstones brought back in april. The shovel will let ya build up to 10 BP worth of things.

To claim the silver mine or gem deposit you need claim the hexes in the route to it, you own basically everything that is built at, I don't think you claimed anything in april, I have to recheck. I don't have the focus atm to do so. If one of you want to go back the "april" session and just get that same format going, it make things real easy. Consumption will gain .05BP as your still not yet consuming 1 full BP of foods.

I am home, a friend came over when I was gone and cleaned up my computer area.. so Ive no clue where my notes are.. my maps, Anything.. She is not a gamer, was just trying to be nice.. but Expect something from me on Saturday. Im going to sleep now.. and not going to use the computer tomarrow.

It was just bronchitis, but this is the 15th year ive had it in a row.. and never before needed to spend a night, let alone most of a week in the hospital.

But im going to take it easy next couple days.. BUT this campaign has been hanging for a little bit so, I want to get things moving again. Magister If you want to PM me anything you would have yourself do over the next three months, beyond what you said at the first real council meeting. I don't know how much access you will have to the net/this campaign when you are gone so we can try to coordinate things.

My Goal is to get each week here on earth being a month of relative time for your characters. Perhaps twice a week even.

i totally would but i am in over 20 games right now. as much as it pains me, i have to pass on recruitments until i get down to a more manageable number.

That said, other PCs, what is our plan for the next month? As Treasurer, I am not really the driving force for our future goals and expansions and i like it that way, but more of a form of checks & balances in the form of regulating our money. Personally, I am a fan of going full steam ahead into getting those new mines operational.

I think a mine is a good idea. It only costs 6 BP though, so we might consider building some more farms as well, especially because we have the abundant natural resource bonus.

I would also request the construction of a Herbalists, possibly using that magical shovel, so the magic guild can be founded. Then we can start getting to work on the grounds of the Magical Academy for our noble scroll scholar.

I still recommend a market being build, who knows tomarrow morning a ship may sail by haven and stop in and want to trade.. Docks may be a good idea as well.

Oh, the market provides magic item slots, so that fits the requirement for the mages guild as well.

Next month I'll be going around for recruitment. Ideally it will pick up a few people, but the idea of the guild is collaboration, not teaching, so ideally they will have some experience already, but probably only looking for only one or two.

Its been a five days for any posts in the Discussion and an hour more for the Gameplay thread.

fabricator doesnt really have the skills to move to the vacant roles, and i dont have the time to invest in playing a second PC at the moment. over the past few weeks i have been avoiding joining new games so that my current games will dwindle naturally to a more manageable number.

I'm good with my role. I think the key thing is that the people running the edicts need to be on top of them, which I supposed is the marshal and explorer for the moment.

I am changing the construction rules slightly and will make note when I redo the main page links and such this week.

Its minor: Just removing the cap of X Constructions, Buildings, improvements per Turn.

I am also not having you guys worry about the houses that are supposed to be attached to various buildings (like the Houses attached to the Trade Shops) I am still charging you for them, but I "The Table" will handle the accounting for them when I give you your BP gain from the month in phase 1.

Short Version: Houses associated with buildings you create will be deducted from the month you finish the buildings in Phase One when we do the weekly turns.

I am still going to maintain the can only claim 3 squares based on size as per RAW.

You guys are size 26 after claiming 3 squares this month. it changed from 2 to 3 hexes at size 25. So I figured may as well count it this month as you guys reached that landmark size

You all think that with over half of the council Vacant, It would be a very good time to interrupt Klokk in the tower.. ..Perhaps on the marrow after you all come back from the Mine in the morning.

Once Verio stamps his approvial on the May Turn, I will jump us ahead to the morning when you guys head to the mine to meet the warforged.

For Example. In april you guys built 2 houses. because they were attached to the trade shops.

In the new way of doing things, You don't need to take the houses into account when buildings. You had far more BP gain then the houses BP Cost of 3 for each.

I am cool with the turn for May. I think there was good moves made there. I might edit the build list slightly, will have to look over it fully but for now... It seems fine!

I did actually mean 4th. :) All of you skipped 2nd and went to 3rd after arriving in haven and officially claiming it+the surrounding hexes + the storyline/rp brought you to halfway to 4th @ fast advancement.

Becoming a kingdom (size) and surviving for the first three months got you to 4th.
