Special Req Prestige class on creation

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Long, unhelpful title aside, I was wondering how you would rule characters starting at high levels(10-15) with a prestige class that requires a special condition( Such as the Mystery Cultist "Must have been spiritually awakened by the presence of a celestial being—either by being rescued from the brink of death by a willing good outsider of CR 5 or greater or by being the recipient of a beneficial spell or effect from a celestial being of CR 10 or greater.") where the special condition is written into backstory

I assume it'd be fine, but I'm curious what everyone elses stance on it would be.

No problem with that. As a GM you'd work that into their backstory with the player.

It's fair grounds to ban evil prestige classes or something like that.

Option one, Are you the GM okay with it? Option two, poll the other players.
Is it reasonable for the being to have been encountered or is it way out there?
Grant the benefit of that powerful being’s attention but it also draws the attention of the entity’s equally powerful enemy.

My main concern is would it unbalance the party? As long as the character 'fits' the flavor of the campaign and party, it should be fine.

On the other hand, if it goes counter to either just explain to the player that it doesn't fit the campaign and deny the request on that basis. It is better to deny something that you think is going to cause a headache later than to wait for it to prove it won't work.

Considering most prestige classes are weaker than the normal PC classes I would have no problem with starting a higher level character with levels in a prestige class. But like any character I would evaluate it in comparison to the rest of the party and if it was overpowered I would veto it.

If you're starting a game at 10-15th level and the character's desired class is "Hellknight" you should let them have it and say they did the thing with slaying a devil: otherwise you're just locking them out of ever doing it, and it gives an opportunity to play with that class you usually don't get.

(Ect, obv, just using Hellknight as an example).
