Evolved companion and no pounce?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

why do so many people suggest evolved familiar to gain pounce, yet evolved familiar specifically says you cant select pounce or reach.... ????

Evolved Familiar and Evolved Companion are two different feats. Only Evolved Companion has the "no pounce or reach" line.

typo, I meant evolved companion, question still stands.

Grand Lodge

because "balance"
companions are meants to be frontliner and fight in melee.
giving reach/pounce to melee combattant is too powerful

on the other hands, familiars are squishy and not meant to be in melee.
so giving pounce is useless (unless corner case)

and giving reach is a way to give tiny familiars an actual 5 ft reach, so they don't have to enter the target's square (to deliver spells for example)

is this a paizo thing or is there an actual developers release errata or something?

Is what a Paizo thing?

It's in the feat text. Evolved Companion says no pounce or reach. Evolved Familiar does not say no pounce or reach.

If people were recommending you take pounce or reach with Evolved Companion, and context does not permit for them to have meant Evolved Familiar instead, then they are not fully understanding the feat.

ok, but did it always say that? why would people suggest it if it said that? do you understand the question now?

I cannot offer any insight as to why they are doing so. My best guess is that they missed the text; it is, admittedly, somewhat subtle.

Grand Lodge

it is a "recent" errata.

when the feat was 1st published, the limitation was not in the text.
so everyone suggested to take pounce/reach .

so many ppl suggested it that it raised the "nerf-errata" flag for Paizo and they release the errata for the feat which prevented the selection of pounce/reach for companion

so, the many ppl suggested it : either the posts date before the errata, or they didn't see it.

ok, so there was a version that did not include that, thank you.

If you're selecting an animal companion because you intend on using pounce or reach, you generally get one that has it built in already, such as a big cat which has pounce without the need for an evolution.

Reach is a different kettle of fish which I'll leave for someone else to stir.
