Someone needs to not get shot and build the resistance after the unexpected but completely inevitable defeat at the hands of aliens.

I usually get rookies advanced a level or two, then name them after "friends" based on what the person wanted (if anything specific). XCOM does a good job of spreading out specialties, so if you lose your heavy, you can bet the next promotion will be to heavy, etc.
