Playing a Wizards (Magus or Riftwarden) in WotR

Wrath of the Righteous

After reading the demon hunter handbook to prepare myself for the WotR Campaign we gonna start in a few weeks I am curious about the Riftwardens. Unfortunaately I have never played a wizard yet and would like to ask two questions about it.

1. Can you tell me if a wizard fits into the campaign since I have read that they are only useful as supporters due to the DR of the demons and since they are often immune to fire/cold/acid (btw. I do not want to play a summoner). I actually wanted to play a magus but I am not sure if this would make fun at all if I cannot deal damage.

2. Do you think a (prestige class) riftwarden would make sense in the WotR and how would you build it?

Wizard with Riftwarden fits into WotR perfectly. Without giving any spoilers, lets just say that Riftwardens are a big part of the campaign. I am currently playing a Wizard/Riftwarden here on the boards.

Battlefield control and buffs are really where you want to focus with Energy Resistance being on most opponents you face. For your Mythic focus, take Archmage (obviously) and Wild Arcana as your primary Archmage ability. It basically gives you access to every single Wizard spell at +2 CL for only 1 MP. I'll give some more suggestions if you're interested.

Great! Thanks for your answer! Could you maybe help me finding the right path (e.g. schools, archetypes and what abilities are important) on the first levels before going into the Riftwarden prestige class? That would be very very helpful for me.

I think you mean SR of the Demons. Wizards work just fine in WotR. While I was playing a Sorcerer, SR was just as much of an issue. The effective response is simple; buff your teammates, battlefield control. As a Wizard, blasting (i.e. direct damage spells) is sub-optimal anyway. Yes, the first few levels, you will feel as though you aren't contributing as much in the fight as your companions, but I can tell you there are plenty of non-combat situations in which you can be active as well.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Irnk has the right of it. Initially you will definitely feel like you're lagging behind the rest of the party; however, don't let that discourage you. Once you start picking up mythic tiers you will start coming into your own. Here's a link to my character's profile. Feel free to look through it and ask any questions.

Schools
The school I use for my wizard is Void, because it has some phenomenal abilities; Reveal Weakness is a god-send for this character. Coupled Arcana is a great combo; you have to burn 1 mythic point, but you can use Reveal Weakness (which scales with Caster Levels and not Character levels) to automatically lower your target's Saving throws and then hit them with a Save or Suck spell. Void Awareness grants you an Insight bonus to STs against spells and SLAs. The downside for Void is that the bonus spells are not great, but they are not terrible.

Race/Archetypes
I took the Spellbinder archetype, because I went with elf for my race. I would highly suggest it as you can really customize your daily spell list easier that way. Plus elves get a +2 bonus to overcome Spell Resistance (which is big).

There are a few other archetypes that would probably fit in well here, but I would avoid the ones that focus heavily on their familiars. Spellslinger would be an interesting archetype, but it completely loses Arcane School which is a big downside in my mind.

Spells
Magic Missile is actually a really good spell for RotR. The mythic version of magic missile can do some serious damage if done properly. Protection from Evil and the Communal Version are very properly for this AP. Obviously Haste is one of the most popular arcane spells. Heroism is a good one. Shield and Mage Armor for yourself is a good choice in case you get singled out. Resist Energy is a good choice.

Mythic Abilities
Mythic Spellcasting is obviously a good choice. Coupled Arcana is great. Eldritch Breach is another must have for a wizard if you are wanting to use spells against your enemy (allows your to roll twice for overcoming SR and take the highest result). Eldritch Flight is great to get when you hit 6th tier (gain a supernatural fly speed of 60 at will).

That is a nice build. I will take a lot of it for building my character. As far as I can see you are using Summoning for damage dealing (besides magic missiles) and battlefield control (Spell Focus: Conjuration -> Augment Summoning). Could you tell something about the efficience since I have read that Summoning is not very effective in mystic adventures since the summoned creatures are not mystic. Is that right?

There is one thing I would like to ask and I was not aware of until I run into this thread. Apparentely the Riftwarden PrC is closely coupled to the cleric level and the charisma modificator. Since you have a very low Charisma Attribute I was wondering if you have any houserules to overcome this backdraft or how you handle this.

So far the summons have been decent, but I use them a lot for battlefield control as while; setting up flanks and such. For the mythic bosses, I plan to keep those summon spells for countering demon summoning abilities.

In regards to the Riftwarden and Charisma, yes it unfortunately tied to Cha. My GM is allowing me to Houserule up a feat that will allow my PC to use his Int as the primary ability instead of Cha. When I initially looked into the Riftwarden I misread the abilities and for some silly reason thought that Int covered everything. My suggestion is to talk with your GM about Houseruling away the Cha to Int, because I frankly don't understand why it's Cha anyway...

Sovereign Court

I'm currently running WotR and we are nearing the end of Book 4 the Midnight Isles.

The human universalist wizard 14/Archmage 6 is just destroying encounters with mythic augmented fireballs. When you ignore energy resistance and immunity and use maximize metamagic (either a rod or the feat) for 212 damage twice in a round (Wild Arcana) it's devastating. He was doing around 100 points with mythic magic missiles and focused on making Phantasmal Killer his thing. With Save DCs from 28 to 31 anything non-mythic is just toast.

Trust me on this.. with mythic in play, you don't need ultra fine tuning. I played an Elf Wizard/Riftwarden who laughed at the notion of spell resistance. WOTR is the campaign where you don't have a need for optimization to excuse not playing the character you want instead of one approved by Charoppers.

our wizard uses Dazing mythic magic missiles to lock down opponents and dole out some reasonable damage, also the mythic path power that lets you roll twice on SR checks is basically required if you want to use any spells that directly attack enemies because of how many demons there are, however with wild Arcana you basically become the party's all-purpose utility knife. We literally skipped half the downtime events and teleported straight into the ivory sanctum, two levels earlier than we should have.
