Chris, I'd agree those two examples you gave are clearly breaking the rules. If the character is clearly not old enough to have been grandfathered in as a boon race (when that race was normally playable), you NEED the boon or you can't play that character. It's not a valid choice.
I'm guessing Mr "retraining' doesn't spend prestige to retrain each and every time either, right? If you take feats that are only useful when paired with someone with a compatible feat, you're SOL if nobody at the table has that compatible feat. Sure, you could retrain the feat out. But then you play every session with the new feat, not only when your buddy isn't around.
