Any Thoughts On Why Devil Imposter Is Banned?

At this point I am trying to make sure that there is not something that is obvious to other people, but not me. It seems to me that from a setting stand point, the Devil Imposter is no more evil then the Appeaser. I do appreciate that some material from Agents of Evil is allowed.

Well, what does a Protean Eidolon look like with this archetype? Mandatory "detects as evil" could be an issue. (Although Clerics already do that with evil deities, don't they?)

Nothing leaps out, but it's not one where I'm surprised.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So, in the rough format of Jiggy's unbanning of a certain trait, here are a couple points for consideration:

1. Is it imbalancing the class? There's an argument to be made about the eidolon getting additional effective evolutions and evolution availability (in theory, but not actually in practice: there are no evolutions that Devils get and Proteans do not in the Unchained book itself) in place of Shield Ally at 4, but we're looking at a fairly significant trade-off here. Nothing else is overly impactful.

2. Does it imbalance the table? Not really. The most concerning thing would be alignment detection, but we already have several legal options that create this issue, not least of which is the cleric of an evil deity.

3. Does it negatively impact the campaign? I can't really see why it would. Again, we already have multiple classes that can emulate the main piece of this, which would be the alignment detection.

The main reason that I would like it to be sanctioned is that I see the idea as a rich ground for background and rp material. I have not really developed any of my ideas, but a lot of them revolve around a good character with a good Eidolon who either grew up in Chelix, or is infiltrating an evil organization.

Is there a link to this archtype, or can you post the text? Without access to the book, it is hard to address the question.

Here it is.

Seems like it should be legal unless the actual flavor for the class greatly differs from the pfsrd description. I don't own the source material for this.

Does it say that they have to be proteans? Couldn't you use this to unlock all the various poison evos for good eidolons? Great way to get a mount evo on your Agathion.

Shield ally, which requires you to be adjacent, in exchange for 2 extra evo points? For skill monkey eidolons or frontliner eidolons, this would be a very nice trade.

4. Does it require clarifications to work?

Also does the natural attack granted by fiendish appearance grant it's various riders? For example, if I have a poison tail sting attack on my eidolon, do I just get the tail sting evo (which doesn't work without a tail?) Or do I get the Tail, tail sting, and poison. What about if I chose wing buffet? This requires me to gain wings, so now I have wings, can I fly?

5. Does it fit the flavor of a campaign?

I could see a Protean or Psychopomp or elemental, being fine with this, maybe even an inevitable. But any of the lawful good eidolons? In a home game a GM could make a call based on backstory whether the eidolon would be willing to carry out the deception. In PFS, this could be jarring. (Why of course my lawful good archon has no problem pretending to be a devil...)

6. Is it cool enough that we want to save it for a boon reward?

Could be.

I'm way too sick to be reading things for depth. I mentally inserted Protean in there for some reason.
