advice on stats for a barbarian

Advice

so im working on a barbarian starting at level3
i rolled 18 14 15 10 10 7

i was thinking
STR18
Dex15
CON14
INT 10
WIS10
CHA7

what i was wondering should i get more strength or pick a race that would allow me to have more constitution to round out the character more. First time making a barbarian. so im curious. or even make my dex higher. im not sure what to do with this character. For story reasons i want it to have a strong dex score and i thought 15 would be good and probobly pump it at level 4.

Do you know who else is going to be in your party? Barbarians are of course very fighty, but they have a pretty wide variety of builds within that niche depending on what exactly you're looking for.

rage powers and feats can really focus a barbarian (in and out of combat), so I would determine some basic back story, and also what combat style(s) you want to use, then just pick stuff that fits your theme/build. I played a Throw Anything dwarven barbarian who's melee and missile option was dwarven war axe, very very fun and effective, as his personality was just way too much fun (waxed philosophical about what rage is and why we have it, eventually took some levels in druid too, which worked really well) Oh, and blink back belt makes that theme/build quite nice, I loved when enemies realized I was NOT just a dumb melee barbarian, usually around the time a magical dwarven war axe flew 20 feet and buried itself in their skull!

Strength. Always more strength.

Switch the dex and con so you can pick up Raging Vitality, it's my personal favorite feat for barbarians (after power attack).

Switch dex and con. You are always going to be easy to hit, a 1 higher modifier after you spend an ability point increase on it wont make enough of a difference. You want your con to be at least 15 so you can pickup raging vitality feat. The feat is basically required as a barbarian so you don't die when knocked unconscious. Str and con are your two most important stats, they should be higher than everything and anything else.

If you're looking for further advice, play a human barbarian. Use the choice of stat bonus to boost strength. Pickup power attack and raging vitality as your first two feats. Use a greatsword and be awesome. Use your favored class bonus to pick up the bonus to Superstition rage power which will give you incredibly good saves.

Str 20
Dex 14
Con 15
Int 10
Wis 10
Cha 7

my one thought if i decide to do a angel born aasimar, i would get access to alter self for more strength and also have access to arcane strike. but having access to heart of the fields might be to good to pass up

Arcane Strike no longer works with SLA. SLA's no longer count to satisfy a prerequisite for anything at all. Not for caster level, or anything else. So you can't use your racial SLA to get access to it or use it count as a scaling caster level to increase the damage.

As for using alter self to get a +2 bonus to strength, that does work. But remember it only works once per day. Which is basically going to be only one fight per day. Sure, it will stack with many other bonuses. But it doesn't stack with the ever important Enlarge person spell, which you also don't qualify to have cast on you as an Aasimar unless you take Scion of Humanity.

Enlarge person gives a size bonus to strength same as Alter self. Also, you can't cast enlarge person on someone under a polymorph affect, see polymorph school magic rules for why. And as Aasimar aren't humanoids, they're native outsiders so can't have Enlarge person cast on them.

So, while alter self might be useful in the short term a ring of enlarge person or a friendly caster helping you out is probably a much better way to go.

if u are an aasimar u cant be enlarged due to being a outsider

There's an alternate racial trait for aasimars that let them count as human.

I'm going to go against the grain and say you don't need more strength. 18 is already more than enough, especially when you can rage. Try a race that gives a boost to one of your mental stats that you'd like to RP the character, and maybe a beneficial physical bump as well, or other useful racial traits.

I know, please reread the material I had posted above, now quoted and in bold.

Scion of Humanity would let you be affected by enlarge person.

However my point wasn't that you should play an Aasimar, but rather that you playing an Aasimar to use the Alter Self ability isn't really a very good idea.
1) It doesn't qualify you for Arcane Strike
2) It doesn't stack with Enlarge Person (which is a relatively common buff or can be had in a ring)
3) Humans can have Enlarge Person cast on them as opposed to Aasimar
4) The Aasimar alter self is once per day, and lasts for minutes equal to your level, which means its only good for 1 battle most of your adventuring career.
