RE: Fighter Thread #21,422 (Weapon Master's Handbook)

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I just downloaded the pdf today of this book, and considering the popularity of fighter threads the past few months I thought I should bring up all the cool stuff in this book.

Weapon Tricks are abilities you can gain based on a weapon group. They essentially give you a list of deeds that you can do once you meet all the prerequisites. Some of them are really cool and useful/skill related.

There are a ton of new style feats that aren't all monk styles.

The Advanced Weapon Training options have absolutely amazing fighter options that are finally abilities that are as good as rage powers. From granting entire feat chains, to granting the equivalent of being a 4+INT skill class, and a 6+INT skill class. The best part is that it is accessible via feat.

Weapon Mastery has so many crazy options. Magic Item Mastery is where things really get crazy, as they allow fighters to exploit the magic used to create his weapons to replicate spell like effects.

Plus a ton of more Combat Tricks to expand upon the stamina system.

The traits are also good, and a couple of the style chains are super fun. This was a pretty cool release, IMO.

I love that this product makes throwing weapon builds just as viable as archery! It might not be as great as archery, but now with feats like Ricochet Toss and the Startoss Style you are no longer bound to paying for multiple weapons or relying solely on Blinkback Belts to really get in all your attacks.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I love that pdf, it basically is the much needed Unchained Fighter

This book transformed weapon training, an otherwise undesirable feature (because it costed too much in terms of power budget for a relatively low gain) into the lynchpin of the class. I like.

Every archetype that trades Weapon Training loses.

Not necessarily. Most of the archetypes that trade weapon training basically have a built-in, archetype-specific version of advanced weapon training. For example, the archer archetype trades the first iteration of weapon training for "bows-only weapon training," then trades all subsequent iterations of weapon training with special abilities and actions that you can do with the bow. In many ways, those archetypes were the precursor to advanced weapon trainings, and while they might not be as broad nor as general as the advanced weapon trainings, they're still great options.

That said, if enough people ask Owen for it, maybe he can be persuaded. I certainly have no problem writing more advanced weapon trainings! (I actually keep a file of them on my computer in case Owen ever asks me to revisit the concept in a future product.)

With all of the positive reactions that I've been seeing in the wake of the Weapon Master's Handbook, I would be VERY surprised if the Player Companion line doesn't revisit the idea of advanced weapon trainings somewhere down the line.
