Quote:

Both the men hold the woman down, covering her mouth to prevent her from screaming.

"Easy, wretch, you will see you will like this!"
But then, from behind them, a dark figure appears, and without making any noise knocks one of the assailants down. The other one looks up, sees the dark shadow and turns to run away, but before he is able he is knock down too.
The woman, tears in her eyes, sees that both of the men are unconscious, moves to remove the crying from her face and searches for her savior.
She is alone in the alley.

I will run a "test" campaign for the Ultimate Intrigue Playtest. I had the idea in mind, and then I found THIS, so I decided to go for it.

I will recruit 4 players on July 6th. I will try to cover all of the Vigilante specializations (Avenger, Stalker. Warlock, Zealot). I will select only characters that clearly will work in a team. Loners and psychopath vigilantes need not to apply.
- The game will be played on the Paizo PbP Forums.
- You should be able to make at least one post a day, even on weekends. If you are unable to please leave the opportunity for someone who can.
- You should be able to play uninterruptedly at least for the next three months. If you can't handle it (vacations, work, school), please leave the opportunity for someone who can.
- Your character will be a level 4 Vigilante Class Human. No other races/classes here. MAYBE I will accept a Half Elf or other core race, but don't count on it.
- Your character will be a know vigilante in the Taldan city of Zimar.
- We will use a finite set of rule books.
- Rules lawyers and Min-Maxers will not enjoy the game. I tend to ignore Rules Lawyers, and exploit the "Min" of the Min-Maxers.
- I like roleplaying a lot (but not self-centered drama).
- Be nice and friendly. Willing to have fun.
- Your characters will have an "adventure" at level 4, and if everything goes ok we will have another at level 8, and so on.

John is a tall muscular Human usually found wearing a full length robe with hood. Due to an injury that kicked off his

retirement, John walks with a limp and uses a cane. John is also usually seen with a longbow over his shoulder. He is a

veteran of the Taldor army. Back then he was a ranger known to be a fierce warrior and fantastic archer. Retired now, he

spends his days in the saloon or elsewhere around town. John seems to be a very upstanding member of the town and seems

to be friends with nearly everyone. His main source of income is hunting wild animals to sell to the saloon who then in

turns cooks and sells the meat to customers, hence the bow he is seen carrying.

The secret is, John doesn't really have a limp. He uses a sword cane so no one knows he has a sword on him. But the sword

is a bit of a red herring, as he really doesn't want anyone to know that he is actually a magic wielding Vigilante known

as the Bolt. When he pulls off that hood and robe, under it is a all Black leather suit, with a dark blue lightning bolt

on the chest, and a mask.

John had a son and wife. They were murdered. You see John is convinced that King Gulreesh's men are responsible. So at

night he goes out to kill or harm the Lord of Filth and his men. He does this out of both vengeance and as a way of

    protecting other innocents.

Going Avenger if possible, think wonder woman ("Lioness" as nom de guerre)

    P.S.

I was intrigued by the idea of a zealot devoted to Serenae but this being in Zimar it seemed quite difficult to have her work well with the population and local authorities

    Liberty's Edge

Rogar: Au contraire...which better use for a Vigilante than a Sarenrae worshiper helping a town that hates her?
Wondering Monster: King Gulreesh is not human... and his minions neither. On the other hand, what does it means that "The Bolt" is Chaotic Neutral? Bent on Vengance, no matter the cost?

    Sczarni

Human or not I don't think it would matter what race King Gulreesh is to work with my back story.
So I was thinking Chaotic as working outside the law, Neutral as in doing what must be done. If anything he would be borderline Chaotic Good, but willing to do what needs to be done to protect the innocents, while also looking for revenge of his family. He may try to Kill or torture for information Gulreesh's people, or Gulreesh himself if given the chance, but all other criminal types he would treat more like Batman treats the common thug. Beat them up, tie them up, turn them into the authorities.

    Liberty's Edge

    Sounds good

    Liberty's Edge

Well, only two submissions so far.
Let's give it more time to see there is more interest.
Is not like we are in a hurry, doesn't we?

    Liberty's Edge

Question, if it's a test, shouldn't the party consist of at least one solid core class for the sake of comparison? Isn't that the point of the playtest to begin with?

    Liberty's Edge

    The short answer: No. :P
The long answer: The 4 "flavors" of vigilante seems to be the four "core" roles (fighter, skill, divine, arcane). That is what I want to test here.
And that way there isn't and "odd" character. They all share the same "stealth" abilities, and the social personas.

    Liberty's Edge

But all you're doing there is comparing them to each other, it does nothing to compare them to rest of the of the classes. Admittedly I don't see this class doing well in the same campaign that would allow most adventurers to shine, but a bard would probably be a good mix with the concept if only because it's a generalist which would make it a good benchmark. Which unless I miss the mark is the point of a playtest. Piece said. I'll say no more, I've either convinced you or not.

    Dark Archive

I would really like to roll up a stalker a la batgirl, and I can get an alias/submission up soon.

And personally, I think the class seems like one that would shine the most in a whole party of vigilantes so the story can play off of the secret identity aspect for everyone, so this campaign sounds great.

    Liberty's Edge

Sahisysha Tree-Singer: About bards... been there, done that. I want to see the Vigilantes in action.
    Sersi: Welcome aboard.

    Liberty's Edge

Alright then, and if you'll have me despite my arguments before, I'd put down as a Zealot.

    Liberty's Edge

    Welcome!

    Liberty's Edge

I'll work up some crunch over the next couple of days. Late right now, my argument is all I'm mentally capable of right now.

Dervish Dance Use Dex modifier instead of Str modifier with scimitar

Hidden Strike +2d6/+2d4 (Ex) Starting at 1st level, the stalker vigilante gains the ability to deal 1d6 extra precision damage on melee attacks (or ranged attacks from within 30 feet) against foes who are unaware of her presence (or who consider her an ally). This extra damage increases by 1d6 at 3rd level and every 2 vigilante levels thereafter. Once she has gained renown in a community, whenever she is in her vigilante identity, she gains a +4 circumstance bonus on Intimidate skill checks. This bonus applies only while she is within a number of miles equal to her vigilante level from the community in which she has gained renown.

Shadow Strike (Ex) The stalker vigilante gains low-light vision and darkvision 60 ft. If she already had darkvision, its range increases by 30 ft.

Social Grace (Ex) Should anyone suspect her of being anything other than what she appears to be while in her social identity, she can make a Disguise skill check with a +20 circumstance bonus to appear as a member of polite society. Whenever the vigilante is in her social identity, she receives a +4 circumstance bonus on Sense Motive skill checks.

Up Close and Personal (Ex) When the stalker vigilante attempts an Acrobatics check to move through an opponent’s space during a move action, she can make a single melee attack against that opponent as a swift action. This attack applies the stalker vigilante’s hidden strike damage as if the foe was unaware of the stalker vigilante. A stalker vigilante must be at least 4th level to choose this talent

Lylin grew up in the lap of luxury as the only child of a wealthy merchant. The Silverveins legacy was well known in Cassomir where they profited greatly in the shipping business, but they relocated to Zamir two generations ago. Even as the empire declines, the Silverveins continue to remain profitable by contracting to the town's large garrison.

Lylin grew increasingly dissatisfied with her life as she was expected to follow myriad rules of high society life. She saw it as a pointless facade covering up the city's real issues of crime and the people's despair. Soon her desire to stop the wrongs of Zamir became an obsession which took on a life of its own. She worked tirelessly to hone her abilities with a sword and to be able to move undetected in the shadows. She spent her days as an heiress glad-handing nobility and her nights stalking the crime filled streets dealing out justice through her blade.

As time passed her renown continued to grow in both arenas. Lylin's wealth, beauty, and exotic blonde hair made her easily stand out in the Taldan city. And under the guise of a black wig and domino, a heroine known only as Nightveil became a source of tall tales spread in social circles high and low.

    Dark Archive

Corsario, if you are ok with me borrowing a feat from a book not on the list (Pathfinder Player Companion: Advanced Class Origins), I would like to tweak one part of my build and take the Fencing Grace feat instead of Dervish Dancing (and replace improved initiative with weapon focus (rapier) so I meet the prerequisites). It would feel much better flavour-wise for the character to use a rapier instead of a scimitar as the latter has more of a Qadiran feel. And given the rocky history of Qadia and Taldor, I can't really justify why my character would have been trained in a scimitar over a rapier. Anyway, just a thought. Feel free to say no.

    Liberty's Edge

Sersi: I think it makes a lot of sense flavor wise. Go for it..

    Liberty's Edge

    Yeah I can't think of s~!#. I'm out.

    Liberty's Edge

Sahisysha... if I can recommend... The idea of a Sarenrae believer, hidden in Taldan... that sounds promising.

    Liberty's Edge

I've still got nothing. I'll post something if I think of it. But best not to hold your breath.

Still here if you'll have me. It's been a rough week but I have not forgotten about this.

    Liberty's Edge

I'll have you! Just waiting for more Taldan's heroes to step up

    Sczarni

Are any of the roles not filled yet?

    Liberty's Edge

    John Smalltree - Warlock
    Lylin Silvervein - Stalker
    Rogar Valertis's character - Avenger?

So we are probably missing a Zealot.

    Yes avenger.

Question: not items above 2k gold means no magic weapons? Because the +1 enchantment costs 2000 gp, so you can't have a weapon better than a +1 sling (which is fine actually, just asking).

I'm working on a dual whielding shield fighter, actually a mix between Captain America and Wonder Woman. Done with the character sheet, the background is a Taldan woman who joined the church of Gorum in order to gain the strengthto avenge the death of her elder brother, assassinated when she was a young girl.

    Liberty's Edge

Or a quarterstaff, right. But in short it's no, no magic weapons, for now.

I think my character is finished. I just doubled checked over my numbers, so it should all be ok. I didn't know how excited I would be about this class when I first read it, but now after building on I am super excited about the vigilante.

And I still don't actually think you can get a magic version of the no cost weapons like sling, club, or quarterstaff because you need a masterwork version (300 gp) then you add the enchantment cost for a total cost of 2,300 gp.

    Liberty's Edge

Yes, you are right Sersi... so no magic weapons for now.

As I said the stats are almost done (not knowing the adventure's focus I decided not to go with a min-maxed character, so exotic weapon proficency instead of power attack, and I've not completed the magical item selection as I'm torn between and hat of disguise, a cloak of resistance or a ring of protection, each one has it's uses depending on the type of game).

Here's what I came up with so far Heria Thaenis "the Lioness of Taldor"

    Liberty's Edge

    Looking good so far Rogar

    Liberty's Edge

Still recruiting for a Zealot Vigilante, and we are go!

    Sczarni

I can't believe that no one wants to try something new. Come on people, where is our Zealot?

    Dark Archive

Maybe if we advertised it as a game for the play test? It might be that people don't know that by just looking at the title?

    Adventure Path Charter Subscriber

I will download it tonight (I can't download at work) and I will play your zealot.

    Liberty's Edge

    Perfect! Welcome aboard Ira!
I think that makes the four of us, we are a go!
First order of business: If you haven't add your hero origin story... what made your character become a Vigilante? What are your exploits so far?

    Heria Thaenis 1st part:
I decided to go with the Hat of disguise as magic item, it's probably less combat effective than a ring of protection or a cloak of resistance but it explains pretty well whay no one yet discovered Heria's identity and it could become useful if the game involves intrigue of some kind not just fighting.

As for heria's details I'm working on them but basically she's the sole daughter of a noble family living in an estate in the countryside of Zimar("bearded" as they say in Taldor). While her parents are the streotypical snobbish taldan nobles, Heria is quite a different story.

Heria could have ended just like her parents but she grew up wanting to be exactly the opposite, and the catalyst for this choice was her brother Markus, whose life and later death had a profound impact on heria.

Markus was a rarity among the taldan nobles, a caring soul enamored with the stories of valor and justice from Taldor of old. Values he took at heart and teached to his little sister, Heria. Markus saw the blatant injustice of Taldan society for what it was and argued vehemently against it. While this was seen as an amusing distraction by most nobles, including his parents it also didn't win Markus many friends in high society and later on ended getting him killed by the minions of one of the many nobles who felt insulted and threatened by a member of their own caste who dared question the constituited order.

This event had shattering effects on Heria and her family. While her parents raged and plotted they revenge out of wounded pride and vengance but ultimately condemned the philosophy that Markus endorsed as dangerous and foolish, Heria saw the death of her brother as proof he had been right all along. There was very little honor left in Taldor and even less justice. Her brother's been right, yet his only mistake had been fatal, he wasn't strong enough to back up his claims and exposed himself too much, making himslef an easy target. Yet what people needed was an example, someone they could proudly follow, someone strong enough to challange the injustice of So Heria took upon herself to become that person.
In a martial city like Zimar it wasn't difficult to find people who could trian her. Yet finding discreet ones was another matter entirely. Knowing her parents would never approve if they knew what she was up to Heria needed someone who would help her become strong, yet did it while not arousing suspicion. For a while Heria despaired yet one day fate answered her prayers. While raiding along a crowded street she witnessed a lone woman, armed with a mere stick put down 4 guards of a noble who was bullying a local merchant. While most people run away, fearful of arousing the nobleman's wrath, the woman looked unconcerned and sent him packing, laughing in his face, then, showing great nimbleness and stealth she disappeared into an hallway as if she never existed. Heria had seen what she needed to see. She decided she wanted the yet unnamed warrior woman to be her teacher.

    Liberty's Edge

What is the "blatant injustice of Taldan society for what it was"?
    Economic?
    Social?
    Aristocratic?

Okie doke. I think it is up accurate and such on my sheet. And I updated my backstory. But I still need to add some specific is about my exploits.

    Sczarni

I just got emailed that there is an updated version of the playtest released today. So we may want to look over that and update our characters.

    Liberty's Edge

Yes, please, let's update to the last playtest.

@ Corsario: All of the above. Taldor as described in the surcebooks is a decadent old empire where all the power belongs to aristocratic elites who are too lazy and jaded to care about the state of utter corruption their (once) glorious empire has fallen into.
So Heria fights against all she perceives as corruption and degradation of the original taldan ideal (best incarnated by Taldor defeating the Whispering Tyrant). Mind you: she's no political activist, she very much believes aristocracy is the right form of government. She "just" wants aristocrats to take responsability for their actions and lead the country with justice and honor not with their self interest and depravation as the main motivators. So she punishes those who in her eyes betray the concepts illustrated above, those who exploit other people and foils their plots exposing their corruption and shaming them in the process. She also fights petty crime and does what she can to give the people of Taldor a figure worthy of respect and admiration in order to promote her ideals. That's why she created her vigilante persona, "The Lioness", to exemplify her ideals through action and galvanize the people of Taldor out of their complacency and submission to a decadent order and regain their former glory.

She's probably very naive, but she tries.

    Adventure Path Charter Subscriber

I'll have the character ready by Monday.

    Liberty's Edge

Rogar: So she is a "noblesse oblige" kind of person?
But she is trying to change something? What? how?
Or she is just trying to do whatever she can against a corrupt society?

    Liberty's Edge

Ira: Sounds good. Use the "2nd round" test rules that came out yesterday

She's fighting injustice, in her mind nobles are the best qualified to lead Taldor as evidenced in its golden age. She believes nobles have the duty to lead with honor and they have an obbligation to their subjects. So while she's more than willing to disgrace corrupt nobles and beat their minions she's not fighting against the system per se, she thinks that once she's removed the bad apples and shown virtuous aristocrats the way, things will naturally get better and Taldor will be able to regain its former glory... Also, she's not really over what happened to his brother and would very much like to nail down the ones responsible for his death.
