Racial Points Clarification

Rules Questions

How many RP are usually allowed when making a custom playable race? I understand 1 - 10 is for a standard race and 11 - 20 is for advanced. Then 21 - 30 is monstrous, right? So does this mean 1 - 20 could all be playable races?

I'm trying to make a race of playable sentient undead, but undead by themselves cost around 16 RP if I remember right.

As many as your GM allows.

I'm the GM. I just want to know if there's anything in the rules that gives a set guideline for this. It helps me to have a general guideline for making player races.

The point costs and the resulting races are not really balanced, especially since you need to consider how their interactions with classes, feats, and other player options.

A low point cost race can be OP and a high point cost race can be easily UP, so you more or less gotta eyeball the effects.

That said, 10-20 is a good range as any.

Well you can look at the races Paizo has made and their popularity. Aasimars have a high RP, and they are super popular.

Because they have powerful racial traits and abilities, advanced and monstrous races require greater challenges, especially at lower levels. The basic guideline for accomplishing this is to treat a group of characters with advanced and monstrous races as a level or more higher for a number of levels based on their total RP spent, using the following chart. Calculate the party's adjusted average party level, and use that number, rather than the actual APL, when creating encounters and adventures for the group. For groups with mixed power levels, average the RP and round the result to the nearest multiple of 10.

Avg RP Average Party Level
1–5 6–10 11–15 16–20
20 +1 level +0 level +0 level +0 level
30 +2 level +1 level +0 level +0 level
40 +3 level +2 level +1 level +0 level

Also be careful. If you're giving your players the change to create races it can lead to problems. I've theory crafted races that are perfect for a certain class and build. Like a race that has fatigue immunity and a Str and Con bonus with a cha penalty for the old wild rager barbarian.

There's no specific "limit" to the number of points.

If you want guidelines:

-The highest RP "player race" that I know of is the Svirfneblin, at 24 RP.

-The average is between 10 and 16 RP. 16 being the Aasimar, one of teh better races.

-The final, most important guideline is that RP means jack shit whatsoever, since many things are cheaper or more expensive than they should be, and the race builder can VERY easily be min-maxed. Like, so easily it's hard not to even if you're trying not to.

also is this race supposed to coexist with the other normal races? Or are you doing all custom? Because if you wanted to fit in then 50+ is way overboard. But if you want to have some sort of epic alien super campaign, then 50+ for all the races could be awesome.

Please keep in mind the racial point build was likely meant as a GM tool. With that said, I wish you good luck in your endeavor.

The best solution would be to give the players up to 10 racial points to build a single race, or play a race from Pathfinder Society legal races, or a race you have created as a playable race for your campaign. Your sentient undead race could be built by you as an option for your players to use since the GM can create a PC race with whatever amount of points you choose.
