Drunken Brute - Using An Alchemist Extract

Rules Questions

Silver Crusade

Just looking for an opinion from everyone.

Is a Barbarian (Drunken Brute archetype)/Alchemist able to consume their extract while raging? The description for using an extract says it is like imbibing a potion.

Secondly, while raging a Drunken Brute can consume a potion as a Move Action that does not draw an AoO.

It's cheesy but one could interpret this to mean that this build could basically cast a spell as a Move action without expending a Feat or using a magic item to do so.

Logically, and in fairness to the game, I would think that the use of an Extract should remain a Standard Action.

Another reason why it could be ruled not to work is that Rage does not allow one to use Intelligence based "skills" or "ability that requires patience or concentration." That is a stretch IMO though.

Thoughts?

(I did try to search for this topic but I didn't have much luck)

Thanks in advance.

From a strictly RAW perspective, no, because drinking extracts works differently than drinking potions. Keep in mind that the standard action for drinking an extract includes drawing it.

I'm happy to let the alchemist use one move action to draw his extract, and another move action to drink it, but doing it all in one move action is pushing it too far.

Also, this should be in the rules forum.

The reason you probably could not find any threads about this is because this isn't the Rules Forum, it's the Pathfinder Society General Discussion Forum.

I'll flag it to be moved to the appropriate location, so you can better get the answer you're looking for, but since Paizo's closed today it might not get moved until tomorrow.

My understanding is:

Yes, you can drink an extract while raging. You can't MAKE one, but you can drink it, since that doesn't require concentration or mental effort. You're just drinking something you've already made.

You can't make a bomb while raging, because you have to actually do chemistry right then to make it.

You don't get to drink an extract as a move action. They're close, but potions and extracts are different. Effects that modify the use time of a potion don't apply to the use of an extract.

The same question already came up some time ago about the Accelerated Drinker trait from Cheliax: Empire of Devils, which uses the same language. TL,DR RainyDayNinja and SteelDraco have the right of it. While extracts in many ways function like potions, they are not potions and thus cannot benefit.
