Zen Archer with Wings!

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hey there, I'm playing pathfinder for over a year now and I've came up with this crazy idea.

In the last session my character died, so I had to make a new one for the next session. I made a level 12 Qinggong Monk/Zen Archer and my next move will be a 1 level sorcerer dip, followed by taking the Dragon Disciple archetype. (Atleast that's the plan)

I think it's cool that (if I make it to level 22) I will be able to fly around like an angel, shooting arrows from above and be able to buff myself and cast spells. (Yes my DM allows us to go beyond level 20)

I would like your guys opinion on this idea.

I will post my stats if you guys need it.

If you want to be a flying Zen archer just be a slyph. At 9th level with two feats you can fly without wings.

I already choose my race, Oread.
And I want to fly with Wings, also i dont want to play a strix because they're ugly. :D

Plus I wouldnt be able to cast spells.

Alright then. Dragon Disciple is a prestige class. You get wings 9 levels into the PRC.

So with your current build, assuming you take DD the next level, you'll have wings by level 22.

It's not a particularity efficient, but it'll work.

Alternately, buy a cloak of flying.

Just be a half celestial

Yes, as I stated above, I will have wings by level 22.
I don't want to waste a slot just to be able to fly, the idea is to be able to fly natural, like an angel.

It's a long shot, but eventually worth it IMO.

What's that? Will I be able to buff myself that way?

You seem to have it figured out. What kind of input are you looking for here?

I was looking for other ways of becoming an "Zen Archer Angel" and possibly post my character's stats and have your guys opinion on it and/or look for things that improve it.

Also opinions about this idea.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

...how have you missed Aasimar, Angelic Blood into Angel Wings. I mean, I know you said Oread, but they're literally called Angel Wings.

I'm going to look this up, thanks!

That way I would only need 1 dip to be able to cast spells.

In terms of actual utility, it's not very optimal. You wind up throwing away a hell of a lot for this. Your best options, honestly, are one of these:

1. Ask your GM if you can respec to Aasimar, Sylph, or Strix. In the former two cases, you'll then take the requisite feats to get flight. Aasimar gets bonus points for being an actual angel.
2. Acquire a magical item that will allow you to fly. There are several, and you might want more than one.
3. Ask your GM if he would allow the Fly spell to be affected by Permanency, and how much that would cost (expect the answer to be "a lot")
4. Take the Eldritch Heritage feat chain with the Elemental (Air), Draconic, or Celestial bloodlines. The first two require four feats and level 17, the last requires three feats and level 9, but you're limited to (Character level -2) minutes/day of flight.

You're going about all this in the very worst way. I'm not being mean, I'm just stating a fact; you're going left 3 times to turn right.

If you want an uber-Archer, who looks cool, flies with Wings, and casts spells, you just described a Scion of Humanity Aasimar Warpriest.

Scion of Humanity Aasimars count as Humans for all purposes, including Racial Favored Class Bonuses, which, as a Warpriest, means you get additional Bonus Combat Feats at lv6, lv12, and lv18.

You get up to 6th Level spells, and taken from the Cleric spell list.

As an Aasimar, you can take Racial Feats that allow you to gain both Wings and Wing Attacks.

The Air Blessing is just stupid. You can use it to completely ignore all penalties invoked by range. You can LITERALLY fire around the world at your opponent who's standing 10ft from you, and hit them in the back. AT FIRST LEVEL. (RAW, of course, but still)

Ranged Attacks wrote:
With a ranged weapon, you can shoot or throw at any target that is within the weapon's maximum range and in line of sight. The maximum range for a thrown weapon is five range increments. For projectile weapons, it is 10 range increments. Some ranged weapons have shorter maximum ranges, as specified in their descriptions.

So your max range would be 1100' with a composite longbow, 800' with a Rifle, 1200' with a heavy crossbow, or 4000' (roughly .75 miles) with a gargantuan trebuchet. Still impressive because you would be as accurate at a quarter mile as 10 ft.

To the OP: Since you're probably not as tied to your physical stats as most martials, you might be able to get away with a 1 level dip into Synthesis Summoner (since it is for more flavor than power I can see it being allowed), 1st level you would get physical wings with an evo point to spare, possibly being put into increasing the speed by 20' (80' fly would be sweet). Plus if you wanted to continue into DD, summoner qualifies.

You sure know your s#%$! Thanks alot! I will build this Scion of Humanity Aasimars Warpriest! Too bad it ain't a Zen Archer, but hey, at least I can build my Angel Archer ♡

Race Aasimar - Acid Resistance 5, Cold Resistance 5, Electricity Resistance 5
CL1 Wrp1 - Point Blank Shot, Weapon Focus (Longbow)
CL2 Wrp2
CL3 Wrp3 - Rapid Shot, Precise Shot
CL4 Wrp4
CL5 Wrp5 - Angelic Blood
CL6 Wrp6 - Weapon Specialization, Deadly Aim
CL7 Wrp7 - Angelic Flesh (Brazen [Fire Resistance 5], or Steel [+1 Nat Arm, Unarmed = Cold Iron])
CL8 Wrp8
CL9 Wrp9 - Snap Shot, Combat Reflexes
CL10 Wrp10
CL11 Wrp11 - Angelic Wings
CL12 Wrp12 - Clustered Shots, Improved Snap Shot
CL13 Wrp13 - Metallic Wings
CL14 Wrp14
CL15 Wrp15 - Point-Blank Mastery, Improved Precise Shot

----

If you don't want the Metallic Wings, you can forego the Angelic Flesh feat as well and instead take Greater Weapon Specialization.

If you do go with Metallic Wings, You can later take the feats Weapon Focus (Wings), Feral Combat Training (Wings), and Dual Enhancement, which allows you to add up to +5 to your Bow and both your Wings for the cost of 1 use of Sacred Weapon.

Try these: Lesser Wings of Flying and these when you can afford them: Wings of Flying

Dark Archive

Raw scion of humanity does not work with assimar :( only works on humanoids not outsiders.

Even better, if you become sacred fist warpriest and you get Crusaders Flurry. You can actually flurry with a bow AND get all warpriest giminicks + monkish things like wis to AC and improved unarmed strike

Scion of Humanity is an alternate racial trait that replaces the Native Outsider subtype and the Celestial language. This means your Aasimar is considered Humanoid (human) for any purpose, while still retaining the benefits of being an Aasimar. Your Aasimar can take Human or Aasimar feats, favored class bonuses, racial class archetypes, and be affected by things like Enlarge Person and Charm Person since s/he is considered humanoid.

Check the Advanced Race Guide.

Scarab Sages

Also, Tengu can grow wings with a feat. Dragon Disciple isn't a bad class, but it has almost no synergy with Zen Archer, and it isn't a very optimal choice.

It's also not thematic at all for an Oread.
