Does aid another stack?

Rules Questions

They are untyped bonuses from different(?) or the same source.

Yes, they stack.

Depending on the situation there May be a reasonable limit to how many different folks that Can help in one task.

This...but yes, they do stack.

They stack as much as you want, but most GM's set reasonable and situational limits on how many people can cooporate on a single task.

An example:

Having one person help you pick a lock by holding a torch or applying pressure may be helpful, but I imagine having the whole party try to help could actually lead to a penalty, as you all crowd around. On the other hand, if someone were to try researching information in a library, having multiple people help you find the right book would be of significant help. In such a context, I would probably grant a time-saving bonus even beyond the normal benefit of Aid Another.

Another example:
Trying to force open a 5 foot door might be limited to a single person or two, whereas a 30 foot wide gate might allow the entire party to help.

They definitely stack if from more than one player. However it gets a little muddled when you take Swift Aid or the Investigator's move action aid another into account to try and aid someone more than once with the same character. This one is fairly often debated.

I'd allow aid another from the same person more than once per round if it was for different things, ie aiding AC and attack, but I wouldn't allow aiding on AC to stack with aiding on AC (if it was from the same person).

"Multiple characters can aid the same friend, and similar bonuses stack."

To me, I read that as if you were say, an investigator with aid as move action, and swift aid, you could aid another 3 times in your turn. You could use this to grant an ally a +2 to his next attack on the enemy, and +2 to his ac against the next attack. But you couldn't aid his next attack 3 times and give him +6.

3 different characters however can aid that character 3 times for a +6. To me the source of the aid is the character, so the same character can't provide aid that stacks multiple times. Same with skills.

As to opening a 5 foot door, only 1 person is allowed. If you have a portable ram it allows a second person to help.

I think one or two people can help to break down a 5-foot door. Portable ram allows them to automatically aid, no strength check necessary.

That's how I read it too, but there are a very large number of people who disagree with that. I see a thread on this topic at least once a week.
