Item Creation

Rules Questions

Item creation rules have always been my achilles heel when it comes to understanding the rules. I have a player wanting to craft a wondrous item that causes a harmless electrical current to pass over the body with jolt. Anyone wanna walk me through how to apply the rules to this request?

There aren't really rules for item creation. As the line goes, they're more like guidelines.

What is the purpose of this item? What is it actually supposed to do, in game terms?

The guidelines for spell-in-a-can magic items are available online, but applying them is more art than science.

This doesn't sound like a spell-in-a-can item, though, because the electricity created by jolt isn't harmless. So Zhayne is right on the money -- what's really going on here?

Without further information, jolt wouldn't be a terrible prerequisite for such an item. Custom magic items like this are a matter of design, though, not rules. So long as the design meshes well with the existing rules, go nuts! (Note: If you're a player, remember that the GM can accept or deny your custom item ideas whether they follow the published guidelines or not.)

Ha! Ok, so apparently its some sorta jolt operated sex toy for our Lady of Calistra, who is constantly harassing everyone lol. I didn't realize that when the inquiry was first made. Still, I'd like to apply some sort of method here. The sorceress knows jolt and has CWI, so that seems good for prereq's. How should I figure out a price? She wants it to function once per day.

...Consider Polypurpose Panacea...for...err...Entertainment.

A command-word activated item is prices as: spell level x caster level x 1800gp. 0-level spells count as 1/2 level for pricing purposes. This gives you an unlimited uses item. (A use-activated item is: spell level x caster level x 2000gp.)

For a 1/day item, you divide the price by 5.

Well, probably use-activated. So spell level (0(.5)) x Caster Level (1) x 2000 = 1000. /5 for 1/day. 200.

200gp base and 100gp to craft it.

Or you could do it for 1000gp base and 500gp to craft to have it as a continuous effect.

why is unlimited uses cheaper?

Command word activated unlimited uses (takes a standard action to activate it). SLxCLx1800.
Use activated item unlimited uses (the effect is activated by using the item, such as wearing it). SLxCLx2000.

Limiting to per day is Price/(5/x) where x = times per day.

Unlimited uses isn't cheaper. Command word activated is cheaper than use activated.

If it doesn't have the full effect of jolt, though, it's within reason to lower the price. Likewise, if it has effects beyond jolt, consider raising the price.

Its not. Its just they way I wrote it.

The pricing table assumes everything is unlimited use. That is why there are specific entries for charged (50 uses or x/day uses) or single-use items. The rest of the formulas are for unlimited use.

*facepalm*

...also, aren't cantrips/orisons at will as long as they prepare it that day? I mean, why do they need a 1/day item of a spell they can cast every six seconds all day long?

Ah, I see. Thank you

You don't want a wondrous item. You want a wand.
