Lovesick drawback

Reign of Winter

Hello all,

I am starting Reign of Winter soon, and one PC has the lovesick drawback. This one is really vexing me; has anyone used this before? Is there a good way to tie it to the AP? How can I use it so it's a penalty, but not one all the time?

Just Pick someone they know from the start and let him/her be present in different ways. And let the idea of this person being somewhere be a major Draw for the lovesick PC. -2 on initiative and perception is bad but there are plenty of traits that Can be worth it.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

Reign of Winter spoiler:
Honestly, if their paramour lives in or near Heldren, once the PC's manage to close the portal I would do as the Drawback itself recommends & switch it out for the Doubt drawback. 'If you really loved him/her/it, you would have found a way to get back before the portal closed'...

But then I am universally acknowledged by all who know me as an evil bastard...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Oh, I can think of a way the drawback could work in Reign of Winter, although it assumes the player doesn't have to start out with a character to be lovesick over.

Reign of Winter Spoilers:
The best individual they could get lovesick over comes from Book 2. Yes, you know who I'm talking about, Greta! What better person to get lovesick over than one explicitly written to get lovesick herself? Greta getting all hot and bothered over a PC requires a successful Diplomacy check, but if you want to use the lovesick drawback in an interesting way you could have the pair just sorta fall in love with each other without rolling.

"But Mr. Bubbbles!" You might say, "Greta is in book 2! That's a whole 4+ levels away from book 1!" To which I say yes, yes it is! The PC doesn't need a specific love interest right from the onset, just the panging in his heart that says "I need someone in my life." In short, this means he will be suffering from the drawback for most of the AP until you guys meet that wily winter wolf waifu. This may seem unfair, but I'm sure most people here would agree that a flat -2 to Initiative and Perception for 4-5 levels is worth it if you're guaranteed to find mutual love with a beautiful, vicious silver-haired woman that can become an ice-spewing wolf-shaped killing machine at will.

If that's still too much, just have him get temporary "love interests" (read: Infatuation, maybe with Nadya?) that goes away after a couple days.

Its a tough one. There are all sorts of love options that can travel with the party starting with half way through the first module, but not really from the starting place.

You could tell the player there is an option coming up and wait for it.

This is actually a great idea! I'm only about 2/3 of the way reading through book 1, so I'm skipping ahead to see if this will work, thank you very much for the idea!

The question now is which woman you're going to hook the player up with, since like I can think of three characters that are straight up said to be "available and open to romance."

Personally I'd tell him to look out for the previously mentioned (in my last post at least) woman from Book 2, but in the end it's based on who the player decides is right for the character first. Can't hurt to warn him the first available choice isn't the last, though.

i disagree, there are plenty of love interests without resorting to Wooing a Winter Wolf, no matter what form they're in

Please, she's a winter wolf that wants to become a winter woman!

Reign of Winter Spoilers:
When your choice prior to Greta is a hardened widow with two kids, a grown woman that is straight up actively looking for a romantic mate is pretty much the best thing ever for a lovesick character.

dude,

:
have you seen Zorka, she has it all, super high charisma, a sense of humor, donkey ears and a beak, now she is a catch! or theres the odd ball dark as shit brady bunch potential with Granny Nan and her "children" as the house keepers:)

or think outside the box with Nazahena, she's a smart lady, she might not want to sink with Elvanna and Co. plus she's finally got that taldan chain off her neck with his smelly goat (ALL male goats are horribly smelly)

Fun stuff:)

in all seriousness, tho you forget Jairess Sonn from book 1, she's a catch and isn't evil, or a wolf:)

Well, the Lovesick drawback actually says the GM chooses the object of affection. So I'm planning on running a "love at first sight" moment when the PC comes upon Greta. You know, romantic music plays, slow close-up on the face, all the cliches! :)

Liberty's Edge

There's also always the possibility of another PC, assuming an appropriate one is available.

Plenty of adventurer appropriate options in the first two books.

Spoiler:
Book 1

Lonely widowed mom ranger and capable businesswoman.

Forlarren foreigner with a cold heart might want to worm her way into the heroes' confidences long term to be in position to eventually betray them or free her own heart.

Barbarian Sorcerer adversary with second thoughts now that she knows who killed her grand-dragon.

Air Maiden who is just with the bad guys for the rookery.

Book 2

Woodwife who lost her husband to a troll and wants a replacement.

Gate guard on the prowl for a mate.

Secret agent bath house woman with a heart and magical cleric mace of gold.

Chelaxian opera bard in need of rescuing.

Polyamorous relationship potential there as well.

Aloof dawn piper of the air looking for a fey affair?
