Roc Animal Companion

Scarab Sages 2/5

Hello all. Just a quick question - I'm currently running a tengu druid with a roc animal companion. However, in my group there is some debate as to whether or not rocs are valid in organized play. Is a roc a legal choice? I've seen it under the additional resources legal for organized play, but the other person argues that nowhere does it explicitly state that druids can take a roc animal companion. The FAQ, which we would normally go to, only talks about Rangers being limited in this regard. Thank you in advance for any feedback!

Find the book it is in. Bestiary 1 I believe. That books entry will have the relevant details. I can't think why it wouldn't be allowed. Unfortunately I am on my phone and can't look.

As a Druid you can have any Animal Companion that is listed as legal; classes such as Rangers and Cavaliers which are restricted to what is listed in the books they appear in must have an archetype that opens up the full Druid list to them in order to take them. Rocs appear in Bestiary 1 and is listed as legal under the additional resources page so it is legal for your druid to have a Roc as a companion.

Beastiary 1, page 236, "Roc"
Rocs taken as animal companions by druids or rangers are typically newly hatched birds -- a baby roc is the size of a person and ready for flight and hunting within minutes of hatching. Unfortunately for druids seeking animal companions of legendary size, an animal companion roc is limited to Large size -- still large enough for a Medium druid or ranger to use the flying beast as a mount.

If you're allowing the roc to go beyond Large size, that's your call (at higher levels, I'd probably allow it). However, while as a DM I don't usually require PC's to track their food, keep in mind that a full grown roc is 30 feet beak to tail, has an 80-foot wingspan, weighs up to 4 tons and carry off elephants and other big animals for food.

So, just how is this tengu druid feeding its roc?

I think you can only take a roc companion if your character's name is Sinbad.

The Exchange

Yes, the Roc entry says druids can take them. For PFS you still have to own the beastiary.

4/5

Well that is the thing, the Bestiary lists Rangers as legal, and is itself a legal source.
