Familiars with Detect Magic and Identifying magic items

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

In a home Pathfinder campaign I'm about to begin, my Wizard has a problem. He's got high Spellcraft, but Divination as an opposition school. I originally thought having a Lyrakien Improved Familiar (we're starting at level 8), which has constant Detect Magic, would overcome the difficulty, until my GM told me to take a closer look at the rules for identifying magic items. Namely, that you must be casting Detect Magic to do so.

What I would like to do (but can't find any precedence for) is do the Identifying Spellcraft check, off of the Familiar's Detect Magic. I was hoping Share Spells or Empathic Link might provide a reason for this to be plausible. Any responses would be much appreciated.

Doesn't the familiar share your skills? So it should be able to use your skill ranks and do it itself.

First remember that your wizard can still prepare detect magic, he'll just need to find a copy to copy into his spellbook and use two slots to prepare. Easy to do during downtime.

You can also still use a wand - 50 castings for 375 gp.

Orfamay is also correct - your familiar has your ranks in Spellcraft, but it uses its own Int modifier and doesn't get the class skill bonus.

Personally I'd just go with the wand option.
