Dune Drifter Cavalier

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

A gun-based cavalier archetype.

Their challenge does absolutely nothing for them until level 11 when they get their mighty charge replacement.

Any guesses as to whether this is intentional or an oversight?

Most likely an oversight, they dont always have a paizo dev writing these and the editor is bad at catching these.

I suggest houseruling it to be like luring cav xhallenge.

On the other hand, the Whip prof. and Fedora banner make me think the class feels more like Indiana Jones than Paladin. Indy has been in far more melee fights than gun fights, and while the gun is clearly a big part of his abilities, he is more of a switch hitter than pure ranged with it.

Considering the class tosses away most of the melee abilities of cav I am inclined to disagree.

Since they thrown in "replace share spells" for animal companion archetypes that were clearly expected for cavaliers, I'm gonna chalk this up to another instance of an oversight of a non-core class's abilities.

I'm inclined to agree that it's a goof as well.

I wonder if they'll ever errata the poor guy or if he'll forever be in the world of house rules like the Titan Mauler.

It's worth mentioning that the challenge for the Order of the Land gives a bonus to ranged attacks. Not to the damage, though. So that's a partial help.

The worst part is that the Cavalier already had a gun-based archetype: the Musketeer from Ultimate Combat. That one traded the mount for the gun, this one loses the charging abilities and tactician.

Did the Cavalier need a second gun-wielding archetype in the first place? Hell, the main reason I considered Musketeer in the first place was because I wanted to play a Cavalier without needing a mount and the Musketeer trades it away.

Well needs is tricky. This one looks like an interesting take, and fits thematical onto Golarion specifically in the Spellscar desert. Essentially this is aimed at playing a cowboy/lawman type.

It is probly my favorite archetype from the book, except for the errors I love it.

I suppose it also could mix fairly well with a Mysterious Stranger. Though I forget if you did that could you get the Quick Clear deed.

The Dune Drifter gives you Amateur Gunslinger at level 1, which lets you pick Quick Clear. Though if you then take Mysterious Stranger, you have to trade away Amateur Gunslinger for Extra Grit. Since Dune Drifter lets you gain more deeds as you level up, it seems like multiclassing it with actual gunslinger levels would conflict.

Is this another error/oversight? Maybe the Dune Drifter should have just gotten the grit class feature for real?
