Can Seoni use a dagger and force missile for a combat check?

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Seoni found a Dagger in her searching about at the Farmhouse. Seoni decided to strap that baby on her hip even though she had no idea which way to point it at the bad guys. Low and behold she meets up with a Bandit. She decides to throw the dagger and cast a Force missle.

giving her: 1D12 + 1D8 + 3D4 +2 Arcane

question do the people at Paizo like what she has done? I found in the rules; for a check a character can only use one boon type per check in this case it is a weapon and a spell, but from what I have read in some posts I am getting the impression this is against the rules. I'm basing this card play that a character can use one card type per check. I have yet to find in the rules that I can not use two skills in one check. any help please

Follow up to as yet unanswered question:

Could Seoni instead of playing two cards use her power to discard a card to roll her Arcane die: 1D12 +1D6 +2

in this case 1D12 +1d6 then reveal the Dagger to roll her Dexterity die +1d4

giving: 1D12 + 1d6 + 1D8 + 1D4 + 2?

The problem is that both of those things "Determine which die you're using" so you can't play both. You can only play one thing which does that be it a spell, item, or weapon. They all state "For your combat check..." on them to make it easy. If you were playing a different weapon on that check, you could use the Dagger's secondary ability (bottom part of the card) to discard it to get d4+1 added to the check.

Seoni's power counts as a spell and is phrased just like any spell with the "For your combat check...". Bottom line is you can never play an Attack spell AND a Weapon on the same check.

While you can play one card of each type, you can only play one card that determines the die and skill for the check. In other words only one card that says "For your combat check" is allowed. You can play other cards that add to that, but only one card can determine the initial die and skill. So, you either play the dagger to determine you are using Dex, or Force Missile to use Arcane, but not both.

Same with your second question. Discarding a card for her power is determining it as using her Arcane skill for the check, and you could not add a weapon to it.

Thanks for the quick replies. I will correct in future games...we only have played the first scenario and this came up for about three combats. Should we reset our decks and redo this first scenario as we did the combat check rule wrong, or continue on with our current constructed decks? I would hate to have a bad mark against us going forward for integrity sake if this is a serious infraction.

I don't see any reason to replaying, but that's up to you. In the end, there are no "serious infractions". You're number one goal should be to have as much fun as you can. If you feel like you've done something awful, then by all means replay that scenario. However I can tell you that one scenario with that mistake won't make a difference so early in the Adventure Path.

Hell, if you wanted, you could keep playing that way as a house rule of you decided that made the game more fun for you. Unless it's part of the recently announced Organized Play program, the rules aren't set in stone you should just play how you have fun. For some people, that means following the rules to the letter. For others, they make their own rule modifications here and there to make it more enjoyable to them.

well said Andrew,I think well keep it the way it is and keep going.

I'll try my hat as a DM: As Seoni plunges her newly found dagger into that vile Jubrayl Vhiski she can feel power escaping from it,as the dagger begins to glow ever more faintly, she thinks to herself that Villian must of been riddled with some serious dark magic to effect such an enchanted blade. Oh well, at least Harsk can use it for cutting up rabbit.

I wouldn't bother replaying either. I think virtually everyone discovers something they did wrong in the first scenario or two. I know I did. Just correct it in future scenarios and enjoy the game.

Now replaying so you can experience other characters, now that is a different story.
