Suggest to me an AP

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

Hi all,

I've got a group of players who all haven't RP'd in quite some time and have never played Pathfinder, but wish to give it a shot (yay!).

I on the other hand am well versed in PF as a player, but have yet to GM a game (although I've GM'd 3.5 D&D games). We're planning to start a game in a month or so.

Given this info, can anyone suggest an AP for me? I'm currently in a Rise of the Runelords campaign as a player, so that's out. Otherwise, any other AP is fair game. It'd help if it was newbie friendly, and didn't take a whole lot of prep work on my part (I'm a lazy GM generally).

Thanks!

...all of them?

What sorts of games and what sorts of stories do you and your players enjoy? If you're enjoying RotRL, and like those kinds of themes, and if you like dungeon-crawl type games, you might check out Shattered Star. It's nominally a sequel, although I believe that it doesn't really spoil anything in RotRL. (I'm GMing a SS game right now myself, and playing in another RotRL game.)

THe only suggestion I would make is browse the site and read the descriptions. A lot of the APs are geared towards specific genres (e.g. horror =Carrion Crown) so if you're group likes pirates then S&S might be the thing.

For overall crowd-pleasing APs I'd suggest Kingmaker or Jade Regent. Shattered Star is very heavy on the dungeon-crawling but looks fun. Its a bit more work but Crimson Throne is in my opinion the best overall AP but will need some conversion work as its 3.5

While I love Kingmaker and will recommend it to any GM I know, if you don't want a lot of prep work I'd recommend steering clear of Kingmaker. Kingmaker is a sandbox campaign where a DM fleshing things out is really necessary to lift the game from a good campaign to a fantastic one. Also, by it's nature you need to be prepared for multiple things in a given session, since you don't know exactly where your PCs will choose to go that day.

From reading through it I'd recommend Curse of the Crimson Throne if you are willing to convert it to Pathfinder from 3.5e (minor changes mostly but enough of them that this is not an insignificant amount of work), or Carrion Crown if your group likes a little bit of horror in their game (though it is still heroic fantasy).

Given this info

There isn't a heck of a lot of info. All we know is that your group is new to Pathfinder, and you want to get them excited about Pathfinder. There are two problems with this. The first is that different APs appeal to different tastes by design. We don't know about your group's roleplaying style, or their genre preferences, or the classes they like to play. I happen to like fiddly subsystems, large-scope decision-making, and exploration, so Kingmaker, Jade Regent, Skull and Shackles, and Reign of Winter appeal to me. But your players may prefer the big dungeons of Shattered Star, the rich environment and NPCs of Curse of the Crimson Throne, or the gothic horror motifs of Carrion Crown. The second is that "getting people excited about Pathfinder" can mean very different things. Do you want to get them excited about the system, or about the setting? If the former, then maybe the 3.5 APs aren't for you, and you should check out Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition or Shattered Star. If the latter, then maybe Rise of the Runelords (again), or Kingmaker, or Carrion Crown, or Jade Regent will thrill you more.

There are currently 14 published adventure paths listed in the PFAP section.

It looks like the answer to your dilemma lies in a d14.

Bear in mind that Shattered Star is a sequel to RotRL, so you might want to steer clear of that one as well.

Shattered Star is also a "sequel" to Curse of the Crimson Throne.

I'd steer clear of Shattered Star personally because I really don't see the appeal of getting an AP for big dungeons. Kingmaker didn't do much for me. I'd personally recommend Crimson Throne out of all of those. Serpent's Skull appears to be okay as far as I can tell. Carrion Crown is also neat if they like horror.

Rather than starting an AP, why not select a module - they have some nice modules for levels 1-7, which would let you dabble your toes in GMing and introduce the players to Pathfinder without being a year-long adventure. Or multi-year if you're like my tabletop group... ^^;;

I would recommend Rise of the Runelords, simply because it was written with an introduction to the Pathfinder world in mind. It has classic elements and the first three sections are really good for general Roleplay. The latter half tends to bog down in serious dungeoncrawling, but there are still enough RP breaks thrown in to keep it moving for the non hack & slash types. Shattered Star and Jade Regent are really successors to RotRl, and they would be enriched by players having already experienced that AP before getting into them. The earlier advice about Kingmaker is valid. Although it is an excellent AP, it relies heavily on both the GM and the Players having extensive knowledge of how the world and game work.

The OP is already a player in RotR, so that option is not possible for him.

If you're willing to use a 3.5 adventure path, I'd vote for Age of Worms.

Recommend

  • Curse of the Crimson Throne (is 3.5) – Potential Spoilers for RotRL
  • Legacy of Fire (is 3.5) – Adventures 4 and 5 completely cut the heroes off from civilization/resupply.
  • Kingmaker – This HIGHLY rated adventure does require extra book keeping.
  • Carrion Crown – This is great if the GM and Players are fans of Lovecraft.

    Recommended with Caveat

  • Shackled City (is 3.5) – Non-Golarion (set in Greyhawk) so setting information may be hard to obtain of you don't already have it.
  • Council of Thieves (early Pathfinder) – This was written concurrently with the rules, so there are some unclear (and incorrect) areas. The first half of the first adventure is weak, but the AP picks up from there.
  • The Jade Regent – Not everyone is thrilled about the “romance/friend” mechanic. The “caravan” mini-subsystem also received “mixed” reviews.
  • Skull & Shackle – People either Love or Hate this AP. There are some complaints about repetitive dungeons.
  • Reign of Winter – Not everyone is thrilled about the moral ambiguity about helping Baba Yaga.

    Not Recommended

  • Second Darkness (is 3.5) – This is actually a strong adventure path if you can plan ahead and avoid the bait and switch. Book 5 is widely considered one of the weakest adventures that PAIZO has ever written.
  • Serpent’s Skull – This AP was “under-written” and you will need to do a LOT of work to flesh out the middle parts (books 3 and 4 specifically).
  • Shattered Star – Contains massive spoilers for Rise of the Runelords.
  • Age of Worms (is 3.5) – This is actually an AWESOME AP, but as the Dungeon Magazine issues that it appears in are owned by WoTC, it cannot be reprinted into a compilation. So the adventures may be VERY hard to get.

  • If you don't mind wrangling PDFs (and dealing with 3.5 set in Greyhawk), the Age of Worms AP is still obtainable from Paizo. You just need to buy 12 PDFs from the Dungeon line (issues # 124 - 135). There are also PDFs available of the 12 Dragon magazines which have the "Wormfood" series of support articles for the AoW AP (issues # 333 - 344).

Savage Tide is the last of the 3.5 Dungeon APs. It's good, but was published around the time that WotC yanked the Dragon/Dungeon licenses from under the feet of Paizo. Therefore - due to some arcane legal formulations - PDFs are not available of all the relevant issues (# 139 - 150). Again, Dragon had a series of support articles ("Savage Tidings", issues # 348 - 359), and - again - not all are available in PDF format.

Don't start with an AP. It's better to start with a module. It's less work for you, and it's a good introduction for your players.

You should check out the Dragon's Demand.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I hadn't considered single modules, so I'll certainly look into some of those.

Zimmerwald: I didn't provide more info because I simply don't know. These guys don't know what RP style they prefer or classes they want to play yet (although I'll probably limit them to the core book). I personally like horror themes, so I'll check out Carrion Crown.
