Wishcrafter level 3 is kind of a bummer

Rules Questions

Quote:
Expanded Wishcraft: At 3rd level and every 2 levels thereafter, the wishcrafter grows more adept at altering reality to fit the whims of others. She may add an additional spell selected from the sorcerer/wizard spell list to her list of spells known. This spell must be one level lower than the highest-level spell she can cast. A wishcrafter can only use these spells in conjunction with her wishbound arcana ability. For example, if she used this ability to learn cat's grace, she can only cast it when another creature wishes for it, and can't cast it on herself because it is a targeted spell. She cannot use these spells to craft or recharge magic items. These bonus spells replace the bloodline spells gained by the sorcerer's bloodline.

At third level, a sorcerer's highest level spell is 1. So basically instead of getting a bonus first level spell (like you would if you were a regular sorcerer) you get to have any one additional *cantrip*, that you can only cast to grant someone's wish. Obviously, at higher levels this becomes a bit better (you're trading power for versatility, which a sorcerer is normally lacking), but man, third level is going to suck. I can't even think of a good cantrip to grant someone's wish. Prestidigitation?

I'm making a Wishcrafter for a one-shot with my local group and just ran across this. I'd almost rather have the spells from my bloodline instead of an extra cantrip!

(Building 5th level and the Elemental Bloodline's 2nd level spell is Scorching Ray. There is no 1st level spell I'd take instead of that, especially with trigger requirements!)

I wish I knew what this magic item did.

*detect magic*

I wish someone would tell that orc to chill out.
*ray of frost*

I wish I could see bloody worth a damn!
*light*

I wish my pants weren't soiled.
*prestidigitation*

That said, Prestidigitation IS the ultimate "I wish" cantrip.

I don't know the limits of those wishes but if it's legal mending could be cool.

Fighter: Damn, we're walking too much, my boots are becoming worn thin. I wish they were as good as new.

Rogue: And I broke one of my lockpicks. I wish I could repair it.

The thing is, you GET six cantrips already. You can even pick up Prestidigitation normally. OH AND THE WISH THING WORKS ON THEM.

The "has to be 1 slot lower" limitation is just the "f*ck you" for being special instead of a normal sorcerer. A normal sorcerer not only gets a 2nd level Bloodline spell, but he can cast it any time he wants to. The wishcrafter? Punched for both spell power AND when he can use it just to get a benefit he gets on all his spells anyway.

The "only works on wishes" and the "can be any spell" should have cancelled out. Being a level lower is just a jerk move to make people not play archetypes.

Hi, I'm Ben Bruck, I wrote the wishcrafter archetype.

I agree its a bummer, my original turnover gave you that ability at 4th (and every even level after) so you could take a 1st level spell at the start. It got changed to 3rd, I'm guessing so that it was at the same level of the ability it replaced.

If you're not playing PFS, I would suggest your GM remove the "one level lower" restriction and let you pick a 1st level spell, but of course that's just me.

But otherwise, Draco is right, my intent was to be a jerk, screw people over, and make them not play my archetype. That's just how I roll, son! :)

The jerk was the guy who dropped the level requirement from 4th to 3rd without thinking about the implications. As YOU wrote it, it would have been fine. :)

It's not a PFS game, and I'm already discussing the issue with my group.

Basically it revolves around being 5th level and using Mage's Tattoo plus the Wish-component to turn Scorching Ray from 4d6 into 8d6. I'd be a little less b@@@+y if it was 6d4 (burning hands) vs. 6d6 (scorching ray) if Scorching Ray scaled like a NORMAL spell.

6d4 vs. 8d6, on the other hand, is a little different.

(Also, burning hands is a touch spell, requiring melee distance, instead of a safe and respectable 25 feet away like a sane squishy)

Thanks for the info. Makes much more sense that way.

That means either remove the restriction or move it up one level, both ways work.
