  • Where did you study swordfighting?

  • In the thread you spoke of adventuring as a form of worship for your goddess - how did you first hear about her? What made her feel the appropriate one for you to worship?

  • Tell me about your goddess as an individual - What is she like that you are so enamoured?

  • How common is this form of religion for elves? How do others feel about you doing this? And, of course, what are Elves like as a people?

  • What brings you to Sandpoint?

James Pollick

  • How do you feel about goblins? Is it a thing where you blame them for your birth parents’ death as monsters, or is it more that, you know, “if people didn’t adventure, the goblins would have left us alone” kind of thing, seeing them more as just wild animals.

  • How does Michael feel about adventuring? Does he romanticise it as others his age? Does James discourage that?

  • Tell me about the sword you’re forging now - what's it like? who is it for?

  • Sandpoint is a coastal town, and gets a fair amount of travelers, by both land and sea. Some look for adventure, others are running from past lives. How do you feel about them being in your town? Are you ever concerned about who comes through?

  • Is it typical for an agent such as yourself to work alone, or is it more because of the size / distance of Sandpoint from anything resembling importance. Along the same lines, is there a particular reason that you specifically have been sent to Sandpoint?

  • How large / widespread is your cult? I don’t necessarily need specifics as much as comparisons. The other you mention is one about Cthulhu, but I imagine that there are more? Is that one larger / more powerful? Where does yours rank, essentially.

  • How much does your cult keep things secret? Do you try to keep your affiliation hidden? What might they do if they found out you leaked knowledge about their existence? If it is a secret, what do people think you do? And how do you get information back to your cult?

  • How long have you been in Sandpoint?

Anduil studied swordfighting at his family estate, which is situated just outside a major city - not the one nearest Sandpoint, but the next closest. (I assume we're using Golarion as a base, making the city Korvosa?) As the second son of a noble family, Anduil was taught the noble arts - dueling, riding, hunting, painting and rhetoric. Despite being an easily distracted student he proved to have a natural flair for the blade. His instructor, an ex-adventurer named Elegon, made sure that he was a competent fighter outside the ring.

He was an adventurer long before he was a worshipper of Desna. After a disagreement with his father lead to his departure from home, Anduil took up adventuring, believing that he could do some good with his skills (and earn enough gold to keep himself in the style he was accustomed.) The first proved to be true, though the second has been.. inconsistent.

During a voyage through the depths of a forest, rumoured to be enchanted, Anduil caught a glimpse of the goddess running through the trees. It was night, and the starlight glimmered on her long hair and her bright eyes. She was laughing, leaping over fallen trees with ease, and her laughter carried her divine essence: daring, luck, joy, adventure. She caught Anduil's eyes as she passed and smiled at him, and he's been in love with her ever since. He's learnt a lot about the goddess in the decades since then, and swears he can feel her presence at times, encouraging him.

The worship of Desna is very rare in elves, as she is the goddess of travelers. Elves are diverse, but almost always settled. They establish a community (a forest, a noble house, a citadel) and they tend to it for centuries. Anduil gets away with his eccentricity through personal charisma, but more conservative elves often view him with distrust.

I'd like to tie this character closer to some others in answering that last question; does anyone have any ideas for how the characters are connected (if at all?) My bonds are:

• ___ realizes just how great I am.
• ___ is someone I can rely on to make me look good.
• ___ needs to work on their appearance.
• ___ needs education on this heroing business, and I will provide it whether they want it or not.

DM wrote:

Read:

Agents work alone and are unaware of anyone else that may even be working the same town, village, city, etc. They are purposefully kept in the dark so they won't accidentally give away another agent. The training is done in such a way where a master trains, teaches and guides 2 to 5 apprentices. Once they reach the age of 16 they are allowed to serve as agents of the organization but never work in the same town or one adjacent to prevent accidentally giving each other away with recognition. After given an assignment they must answer the following questions within 1 to 2 years:
1.What is the city or municipality's greatest resource and why?
2.What or who can be manipulated to control (and why/how):
-The City or municipality?
-The Population
-Their resources?
3.Could this city or municipality serve the organization?
4.What is Haster's will for this city?
Agents are encouraged to glorify Haster while on assignment. Once the questions are answered they are to report back to their master. It’s rare that reasons are specifically given to city assignment and Sandpoint isn't an exception. This is Mae's second assignment. The last she had heard, the first city she had been assigned to had burned to the ground. This was welcome news indeed.

Mae was 1 of 2. Her Master's name was The Bricklayer. He called her The Raven. The boy she was raised with was The Downtrodden

DM wrote:

Read:

Mae is completely unaware of how large the cult is due to the structure of the organization mentioned above. The apprentices can't see beyond their master, their master can't see beyond his master, etc. She suspects that she one of many tentacles that extend down from a small body of elders with Haster at the very top. In reality it is a council of 20 with 7 tiers under them. The total members number in the thousands.

The details of Cthulhu's church and the church’s control are unknown although it is rumored that there are more members. A single Cthulhu monastery is known of. Their belief in love and peace is believed to be a front or at the least…dumb.

Members of the organization are taught of the final battle and....rest assured Haster will win. The order of the elder gods (as spoken of) are Cthulhu/Haster (brothers who will fight for control of the world's resources/inhabitants), and then the less siblings of chaos: Hnarqu, Gol-goroth, Cynothoglys, Xoxiigghua, Volgna-Gath, Ut'Ulls-Hr'Her and Sedmelluq. They are worshipped by lesser cults less worried about their discovery and power. Haster is occasionally spoken of in ancient texts as the lesser of the 2 main brothers.

DM wrote:

How long have you been in Sandpoint?

Read:

The knowledge of Haster's existence isn't a complete mystery to the world. As far as the general public knows, there are only a few who STILL worship a god named Haster. Most consider it an outdated and unpopular religion.

Agents must be discrete about what they share and how they act. Their assignment and the nature of their assignments are however forbidden knowledge to the public. Anything that could implicate the organization in general is strictly forbidden. Not following the rules or turning against the organization frequently results in members disappearing off the face of the earth. Presumably they are tortured for the glory of Haster first.

In the previous town, Mae worked her way up to the position of mayor's assistant. From there she was able to determine that the town was of very little use and would make a wonderful sacrifice to Haster.

In general, I think I’d like to angle Mae as being frustrated with the organization and the total secrecy within the organization. She would rather glorify Haster without the secrecy. She has doubts about what the organization really does and if they truly serve the ultimate lord of chaos and entropy or if they just aim to gain power for themselves.

@Anduil I could see me being someone you think needs to be taught how to be a hero? Might lead to some fun disasters.

As far as dwarves go...I'm always interested in mixing things up so I'd definitely be ok if they didn't exist in general or were replace by something altogether different.

Yes, for now. 2 days. Staying in a small tavern just outside of town until she can get a good grasp of the situation.

The forums being down most of the day has limited my ability to post a lot this evening, but I'll read the answers super in depth tomorrow and give more questions as they occur to me.

Reminds me a bit of Felurian from The Kingkiller Chronicles. In a very good way.

Same, which is why I asked. Anything to get away from the Tolkien-esque standards, honestly.

He hasn't popped in here yet, but Mooshy's "Jin'roku the Curser" is a more tribal take on the Halfling, which he proposed as something particular to his people, but it could be all Halflings if that's a direction that he/you guys want to go in.

But it opens up interesting questions to not have them - they're widely accepted as being, you know, "oh they're in the mountains, they do the mining, they fend off the Drow and forge things." Okay, sure, so what's the world like if they don't exist? Has someone else moved into that position? Has no one?

Also, about Bonds / Pathfinder Canon

I mentioned this to Group 2 already, so I'm just going to say it here, too:

Yorick wrote:

When it comes to Pathfinder canon, 100% ignore it. We'll use a couple of names and the Adventure Path will serve as a loose template, but we're still going to make things up. Basically Sandpoint as canon for us is like, "~1000 people coastal town, reasonably popular with trade and travelers."

The Pathfinder stuff is there if we want to use it, but certainly don't feel like you have to. Hell, this could end up not even really being Rise of the Runelords after a few months, who knows!

As for previous relationships, you can establish bonds with specific characters if you want to, but if you've adventured together before, it wouldn't be around these parts, so don't worry about trying to force an existing relationship. You'll murder-kill things together soon enough.

Bonds are definitely a good idea to get started, because even if you don't yet know each other, it'll help you guys establish what you want or expect the relationship to be like. It'll help keep people on the same page.

But again, don't worry about forcing it if something isn't coming to mind, or if you want to see how the characters interact together. You can make up bonds at literally any time. And, of course, you don't have to use the ones on the sheet, but obviously I'll want to veto it if you choose a bond like, "Onrik doesn't know how to tie his shoes, but I will teach him."

Do they actually know each other's real names? Or are these more terms of enderament or codenames? Also, your Holy symbol is composed of the bones of a Raven. Is that coincidence, or is it common that a follower of your cult would have a holy symbol tailored to them?

For the first 5 years of apprenticeship, members are stripped of their name and forbidden to use it. At the 5 year mark, apprentices are tasked with going into the wild and coming back with a symbol that represented their passion for and relationship with Haster. When they come back they are given a name based on their particular brand of devotion.

Mae was 7. She had hiked higher into the mountains and spent the night wedged under some roots that had grown over an outcropping of rocks. She spent the morning watching a mother Raven tend to a nest of screaming baby birds. Haster darling, help me be as crafty as the Raven and I will make a sacrifice of a fool. Mae cursed the bird’s wings as it left the nest and it fell helplessly to the ground. She took the unconscious bird and nailed it to a tree. Mae hid and waited. With the next few hours a fox came to investigate the now cawing bird. Mae cursed the fox with weakness and blindness and while it crawled on its belly for an unseen safety she knocked it unconscious with a rock. She delicately cut open its rib cage and chest to expose the still beating heart. Haster darling, I give this fox to you as I give myself. She created an alter inside the fox and lit it on fire. She killed and ate the Raven and took the bones with her for cleaning later. Her master named her The Raven. She made the holy symbol after. She was never told why her master was The Bricklayer or why the boy was named The Downtrodden.

You know, it strikes me that dwarves are basically designed to make D&D style play work. They build sprawling underground complexes, collect treasure, craft items, and are prone to awaking ancient evils or disturbing subterranean threats (which kill them and take their dungeon). They basically show up and build location-adventures.

An idea for the dwarves.
One of the elder gods resides in the mountains and corrupted elves to work the mines. They are the "drow". Maybe some could be saved?

Another idea: Dwarves once existed but died out several thousand years ago. There are hints at their culture but its little more than legend. Dwemer from Elder Scrolls kind of thing.

Female Dwarf | HP 25/25 | Peerless Fighter 1 | XP 2 | 3 Armour | Battleaxe (close, +2 damage, +2 piercing) [d10 dmg]

Haha the lore in our group is making the elves an ancient and extinct race, and you guys are suggesting the same but for dwarves.

That makes me want the lore of dwarves in this group to be something crazy....like....people always thought dwarves were a thing but it turns out they were just diglets.

I like the idea of Elves having been corrupted by this dark god, and into this race that's part Drow, part Elf, and part Duergar. Because of the situation with the mountains, it could be possible that we don't actually know their fate? Maybe it's hundreds of years since anyone has seen one or something.

Crunch is up! Allow me to introduce myself to my fellow players.

I am Jin. My full name is Jin'roku, and I am called the Curser among my own people, from whom I am exiled; but none of you are close enough to me yet to know that.

My bonds are as follows:

I have shown _______________ the power of the arcane arts.
I suspect _______________ fears what they do not understand.
_______________ knows the secret to my powers.

I would say that Anduil probably thinks I need to work on my appearance. My home is far less "civilized" than what you're used to, and our cultural norms are very different. As a result, I stand out pretty dramatically where I am. Halflings being the tribal, retiring, xenophobic race that they are, I may even be one of the few halflings that you know personally.

If we have had any combat-related encounters together, I would say that Mae is perceptive enough to know the secret to my powers.

The only thing I want to add to what is currently forming in our discussion re: dwarves is, I want them to be the world's foremost in the field of astronomy and star-reading. They named the constellations, they advanced astronomical sciences, they build enormous, complicated telescopes through which to view the night sky from their mountaintop homes. Sound cool?

I like that they don't really have anything to do with underground-y things. That could be interesting. Could still use the corrupted elves idea to explain the underground and the mining or just add an additional piece of fiction to the game. Or the diglet idea...

  • James has a simple opinion of goblins. They're vermin. Horrible vermin, but like one calls the apothecary to systematically ensure that your crops aren't being eaten by weevils, so one should call the guard to ensure that the goblins stay in the environment they exist in instead of sending in crazy people with something to prove and a hunger for treasure.

  • Michael does often romanticise adventuring, which James is not a fan of, but does not feel that he can truly stop his son from having his own opinions. Still, he attempts to keep the boy away from the adventuring type and attempts to push him toward more... stable role models.

  • The sword James is working on now is a Longblade, called in some areas a Bastard Sword. It is the largest sword James has ever made, as he's attempting some new forging methods he had discovered which he hopes will keep the longer blade lighter and stronger. It seems to have imbued the blade with a strange pattern to the metal, but James considers the wavy darkening in the metal a bonus, since it will make them easily identifiable. The weapon is shockingly light for as large as it is, leading James to jokingly call is Pyngd (an old word for 'weight'), though he suspects that the eventual buyer will likely rename it. James is forging this sword more to see if he can than for any particular client. Perhaps not the smartest business move but James has always been more passionate about the craft than the money.

  • James is as concerned as any parent about the people around his child, but he feels that the cosmopolitan nature of the community is good for his family. Plus these people and travelers are his livelihood, and he can often be found in his open air forge near the square showing off his wares and his methods in attempts to manage a sale.

Male Human Improved Fighter lvl 1 0xp

As for Bonds on others sheets, I think James would be best served with the following ones.

For Mae:

_______________ has insulted my deity; I do not trust them.

James could very well have insulted Hastur or the Mystery Cults in general in normal conversation. They certainly don't represent his beliefs.

_______________ is a good and faithful person; I trust them.

A bit odd, but I suppose if Mae trusts in faith, even in something she doesn't believe in, James is a fairly faithful person.

I am working on converting _______________ to my faith.

This would be a challenge, and not likely one that would succeed, but she'd be free to try.

For Anduil:

• ___ is someone I can rely on to make me look good.

James would not be attempting to show off, so I'm sure Anduil would look good in comparison.

• ___ needs to work on their appearance.

Yeah...

• ___ needs education on this heroing business, and I will provide it whether they want it or not.

James is disdainful of heroics and adventurers, so maybe Anduil could attempt to change his mind.

For Jin:

I suspect _______________ fears what they do not understand.

James certainly would, particularly if he had to rely on it.

_______________ knows the secret to my powers.

This ones a tougher sell, but it could work ok I think.

For my own bonds:

_______________ owes me their life, whether they admit it or not.

I could have saved any of you previously, though I prefer Anduil or Jin for this spot.

I have sworn to protect _______________.

Jin, particularly if I knew the secret of his power for whatever reason. Could be a source of tension.

_______________ is soft, but I will make them hard like me.

Anduil again. Possibly Mae if I don't know her religion, or maybe even if I do and think I could turn her.

I worry about the ability of _______________ to survive in the world.

Pretty much anyone works here.

What's everyone think?

Yay Ryuko is here!

I have my in person game tonight instead of Wednesday, so I'll respond to James's answers, compile Jin's questions, and have a dottable Gameplay thread all up in the morning.

  • Where did your mask come from? Is it something you found or something you made?

Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shapeshifting master of darkness I was a young halfling in a small, insular tribe with no name. The only faces I ever saw were those of my mother and father, and of animals; all others were masked or hooded according to our culture. Before a young halfling is permitted to leave his parents' hut, he must create a mask to wear from materials his parents provide for him. My three masks are made of painted wood, from an old log my father hauled home with the help of his donkey. I made three because my father cared enough for me to bring me enough material. The three masks were primitive and simple in nature, until the witch doctor of the tribe painted them with mystic pigments. The paint varies from mask to mask; brightly-colored and garish yellows and greens on the face expressing ecstatic joy, dull and cool blues and browns on the mask of despair, and two simple unmixed tones - black and red - for the mask of rage. When I next wore the painted masks, they awoke the magical potential within me; at levels unheard-of among the halflings. Immediately, I went from being a regular member of the community to being feared and mistrusted simply because of my power. Even my parents knew fear when they saw my budding talents, despite the fact that I never meant anybody any harm. This built a deep-seated resentment and mistrust of others in me, and encouraged me to twist my magic toward deception and trickery.

YoricksRequiem wrote:
  • Does your magical power come directly from the mask itself, or is it more like a conduit that channels naturally existing magic?

They were the awakening catalyst, and they now channel the existing magical potential within my soul. In-character, I honestly do not know if I could perform magic without them; being without them is a completely alien idea to me as a halfling, since I never take them off except to sleep, and never reveal my true face to anyone but close family. I wear white paint on my face under my mask to avoid embarrassment if I must switch masks or remove my current mask for any reason. It's highly culturally taboo to show your uncovered face to others, for halflings. We dealt with outsiders very rarely, but enough to know that they don't think anything of showing their true face to anyone, so it's not a shock for me in Sandpoint; however, it takes me some getting used to, seeing everyone look so naked like that.

YoricksRequiem wrote:
  • Where / How did you learn about controlling magic?

Halflings tend to know small, petty spells, complicated and ineffective; I began there, learning how to concentrate and focus on what I desired to happen. However, my natural talents soon far outstripped anyone else in the tribe, which drove them to hate and fear me.

YoricksRequiem wrote:
  • Are mages common for Halflings to be? If not, how do they feel about them? Revered, Feared, Respected, etc.

Mages pop up every 100 or 200 halfling babies or so, across the entire species. Because my tribe was so small, they had not had to deal with a true Mage baby in their tribe for many generations.

I was exiled for refusing to stop using my magic on others. I was warned, multiple times, that practicing my gift in ways that involved other people was going to get me into trouble. Still, I thought I could get away with it without getting caught.

I knew I would be leaving the tribe eventually. My only real regret of my exile is the disappointment my parents felt when I was punished. I don't miss the rest of the tribe. Small-minded fools. They're the ones who dubbed me "the Curser," because of my harmless little magical experiments on a few of them. You mess up ONE spell and suddenly all you do is curses? Please.

My only friend - the person I will miss most - was a halfling woman named Tali'yah. Simply Tali, to everyone else but me. Outside of my parents, she is the only one to have seen my unmasked, unpainted face. It was heartbreaking having to leave her behind.

  • With Halflings being tribal and xenophobic, what brings you to Sandpoint? Not only a town, but one that contains a lot of people and likely no (or at least few) Halflings.

I had heard tales of magic-practitioners being more common among the Big People of the world. I wandered into Sandpoint because it was the nearest, biggest city to my tribal lands, which are four weeks' ride north. I rode in on a wild Ass that I had found and befriended, but at the time of the beginning of the story, I have lost him in the city.

James could very well have insulted Hastur or the Mystery Cults in general in normal conversation. They certainly don't represent his beliefs.

Accidental sounds good. I'll mark you down for that one.

I think this is the one that would end up working the best. I'm not strong at all. Maybe you think I rely on casting too much.

For my bonds:

James has insulted my deity; I do not trust them.

_______________ is a good and faithful person; I trust them.
This could possibly be Jin in a twisted kind of way. His devotion to what he wants to do could be inspiring and Mae trusts his ability to cause a bit of chaos. This could also be James, also in the twisted way that I can trust that he will always try to do the "right" thing (despite what Mae really things).

_______________ is in constant danger, I will keep them safe.
Could also either be Jin or Anduil for the same reason as above. OR I might want to find out more information about Jin's culture and he's the only tie back to it that I know of.

I am working on converting _______________ to my faith.
I'm probably going to abandon this one for the moment. It could be something that pops up later if the opportunity presents itself.

Good, Like it.

We could also twist this one into something along the lines of "James' faith makes him predictable." I could see Mae believing herself very able to manipulate James due to his simple convictions and straight shooting nature. Just a thought.

I'll mark Mae down for worrying about surviving.

I'm going to compile the world-building information that we have decided on and start filling out the Campaign tab and also get the first Gameplay post up soon!

Also, how about this to consolidate our feelings on Dwarves:

Quote:

The Dwarf people were never a particularly large population, mostly living within a single mountain range. While they would mine and smelt ore for trade, their true passion lay in the stars. All of the constellations were named by Dwarves, and they pioneered the first telescopes.

What happened to the Dwarves in the last 100 years is a mystery. They began trading less and less, eventually stopping entirely. Their gates do not open at all anymore. Where there was once black smoke billowing from the mountains for their smelting, it now has a green/yellow hue to it.

Sometime within the past 50 years, the Dwarves completed construction of a massive observatory, believed by some scholars to be a more sophisticated telescope. They'd like to ask more about it, but unfortunately for them, they haven't seen a Dwarf in decades: The stone doors open for no one.

Haha, I totally meant that and said it in a very confusing way. Something for another time we do bonds.

I definitely like the missing dwarves aspect. One wonders what they're up to.

Paizo's numerous hits from the humble bundle is severely limiting my ability to interact with the forums, which I assume is the same for many of you. I'll do what i can to post over the next few days, but it took hours to access anything today, so let's anticipate some slowdowns a bit.

Male Human Super Cruel DM 10

Is that what the issue is? I tried to write a post for the other game three times and bad it eaten each time. That makes more sense now.

Yeah it's.. not good. It took me 3 hours to write a post last night.

On the bright side, I did take advantage of the humble bundle and get a bunch of Pathfinder PDFs for a great price.

Sorry guys, weekends are not super great for me. I'll have a post up tomorrow.

Taking a 3 day weekend from posting today guys, I'm released early from work and it's too bright outside to sit at my computer for now. Might update tonight, otherwise have a good weekend and will update Monday!

Site was down during the only time of day that I had free to write updates yesterday, which is why I didn't post anything. Too busy at work today to post a full update now, but I will be taking care of that when I get home from work tonight. Update coming in the evening! Cheers folks

Storyweaver 10

Yeah the last few days of downtime was upsetting, no worries, though!

Things will actually get exciting soon. :)

Storyweaver 10

I may have forgotten to say this, but DW ordinarily has "End of Session XP", wherein you mark XP for:
- Following your Alignment / Drive
- Resolving bonds
- Learning something notable about the world
- Defeating a notable enemy
- Looting a notable treasure

Since we aren't doing sessions, I think we'll be doing this as like, "scenes". They'll probably longer than most Sessions tend to be, but it also will give more time to ensure that you actually do get XP out of it. The first scene will be coming to an end within the next couple of days (depending on how long combat takes).

In the future I'll probably just say "End of scene" in the Game and we can chat here in Discussion about which things were / weren't achieved.

With it is still being early, don't worry if you haven't been doing anything with bonds - most of you haven't met yet, but again, now that you can (as players) see how each other operate, you can still think about what kinds of bonds you'll like to have when you do meet in-game.

For Anduil and Jin, who have already met, feel free to add Bonds at any time. And likewise, Mae, you can add Bonds as soon as you meet the others.

As I said on Reddit, I'm open to creating a second character for this group! I love dungeon world :D

Storyweaver 10

@Smith - Thanks! I think there's enough new blood that I'd like to give someone else a go, though. You and Swan both expressed interest and while I'd love to have you, I definitely want to give other people a shot.

@Jin / @Mae - I both revived the Recruitment thread and threw a post up on Reddit so there's a bunch of people coming to submit. Once there are a suitable amount and I close down recruitment, we can have a couple of Private Messages about it and decide which two to bring in.

Dark Archive

Just a heads up. I'm going to be out on vacation for a week starting tomorrow. In all likelihood I'll not be posting, but I'm still interested in playing.
