Favorite Con Moments

Pathfinder Society

5/5

I was thinking about this the other day as I was gathering things for an upcoming con.

What are you favorite con moments involving PFS?

Winning a set of dice one slot by rolling 6 natural 20's. Then taking that set of dice and rolling 12 natural 20's in the next slot.

I've only ever been to one Con (Con of the North 2012), but the highlight was probably the finale of the interactive special. I'd never played in a format like that before, and it was awesome.

The hellknight knighting ceremony at the early part of convocation at last years PaizoCon. I had to get my hand on a copy of the speech because it was so cool.

At FlatCon Oct 2012.

Rise of the Goblin Guild:

The party got to the sewer, and thought it wwould be a good idea to have Ekkie approach the guards and ask to speak to 'the one with the big floppy hat' again. One of the guards went to get the bard while the other waited. The guard and bard came back, crossing over the pit trap one at a time. Ekkie isnt able to hold the bluff for long, and battle ensues. A caster puts grease directly under the bard, who happens to be standing right on the edge of the pit, so half of the grease is on the pit trap door.
The bard runs away, making the save for the grease. Ekkie follows, trying to catch the bard, making the save for the grease. The monk decides he will jump over the grease and chase the bard also. he jumps successfully over the grease, lands on the un-greased half of the pit trap, fails his Reflex save, and lands in the pit.
Everyone looks confused. I had to explain what all had happened again so they could follow what had led to him being in the pit, lol.
The party half-heartedly gives chase to the bard who makes it to the Alrchemist lab before being caught, dragging those guys into the encounter as well.
So the party wound up 2.5 encounters worth of bad guys at one time in a really long fight.
Nobody died. Everyone had a great time.

Little Egypt Wars, Sept 2012

Portal of the Sacred Rune:

I was GMing for VC Michael VonHasslen, VL Tim Watkins, and a few other players.
They decided to teleport to the bottom of the pit and work their way up, instead of going down the stairs.
Aside from the normal hilarity this might cause because of unprepared-for-this-situation bad guys, the party seemed to be having fun. I was still a bit worried about the room with the 'rock ceiling' trap thing, but it occurred to me when they got there that nothing would happen. The trigger is on the bottom stair on the stairs that lead downinto the room, meaning they wont see anything until one of them crosses the room altogether.
"So basically, you are walking through the room. Arnim steps on the stair to head up, and the room changes, with the stairs behind you disappearing, a new set appearing where the hole in the wall was to the left, and now the ceiling looks like it's about to collapse."

At Dragon*Con 2012, I was handing out the tokens to players and GMs in one slot, the ones that you can turn in for a chance to win boons. I tried to give one to a particular GM, and he said he didn't want it. I asked "Are you sure? You can win a boon with it." He just laughed, and one of the players said he could get any boon he wanted. There was an awkward pause, then he said "I'm Michael Brock." How was I supposed to recognize him without his gold helmet?

Mine was trotting this little prop out for three of my Storming the Diamond Gate tables at Tacticon 2012 (don't look at the link if you don't want a spoiler). The reactions from the players were awesome, every time. And the dynamics it added to the combat were really fun.

Thanks to Myron Pauls for the inspiration, and Mike Brock for the encouragement, to give building the terrain a go. It worked out just as they said it would.

Nice, Dragon! We get to see Myron's terrain all the time here, it's easy to get spoiled.

You can go through the photo album to see how it was done, start to finish. It wasn't too hard, but it was a lot of work. I'm sure there are easier ways (this was my first ever attempt), but I wanted it to really stand out in the gaming hall, so I pulled out all the stops.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a specific moment, so I'll just talk about my favorite con overall: Dice Tower 2012 in Orlando, FL.

It's mostly a board gaming convention, and Pathfinder Society was the only RPG there, so they put us in our own little side room away from the rest of the convention. I came up with my regular circle of friends from southern Florida, and we had a lot of the "usual suspects" for Florida conventions. It was a small group in the RPG room, with only about 4-5 tables going at a time. So by the end of the convention, I'd pretty much had a chance to meet and hang out with just about everyone there.

Venture-Captain Kristie Schweyer did a great job organizing, bringing some fun boons and other prizes for people to win, and running a GM 101 session at the end of the convention, which had a much bigger attendance than I was expecting.

This was also only my second time GMing at a convention for people I don't know, and my first time running multiple tables at the same con. I hit my first GM star and got a certificate from Kristie at that convention.

My favorite game of the convention was probably the final session, when I played Storming the Diamond Gate with VL Dylan Williams as our GM. Our party consisted of my gnome sorcerer, my friend's gnome alchemist (both with stereotypical wacky gnome personalities), a halfling bard raised by gnomes (again, wacky gnome-like personality), a human wizard with a similarly ADHD-esque personality, a big, dumb bruiser type of fighter (maybe half-orc, but I don't remember now), and a dwarven monk who kept rolling his eyes at the antics of all five of the rest of us. I'm still not sure if his eye rolling was supposed to be in character or not. We may have been annoying the player as much as the character, but he's a quiet enough guy that I couldn't tell for sure.

I think that combination of players/characters would have been fun in any scenario, but the oddball mix of PC abilities and personalities made things extra interesting for this specific adventure. The final battle was just epic, lasting about 9 or 10 rounds, with everyone fully engaged the entire time. In fact, that great final battle is a large part of why I'm looking forward to GMing this adventure next month for my local group in my new home here in Chicago. But we had some weird fun with some of the earlier fights, too.

As an example,

Spoiler:
My gnome used his racial once per day spell-like casting of Speak with Animals and high charisma to talk the guard dog into leaving us alone while we killed its masters.

All in all, it was just a fun convention. The small size of the RPG room made for a relatively intimate setting, and I got to hang out with people I already knew and make some new friends, while playing and GMing a bunch of sessions over the 3 days.

That is amazing! I don't suppose you're anywhere near Chicago and would let me borrow it on February 11?

I wish I had time (and talent!) to build something like that.

Kublacon, 2012. I had a player try to use magical lineage and the merciful metamagic to cast Magic Missile as a cantrip. That didn't sound right to me, so I lean out and who do I see but Jason Buhlman. I ask, he answers, and the player gets his response. He wasn't happy with it, asks where I got my information. When he hears its the author of the system, he quiets right on down.

The 2009 Gencon special event. Everyone with banners of their team and everyone running around the convention looking for their next encounter. An area effect explosion trap almost TPKed my group, but a single PC was left at 1 hp with a potion of CLW. Yay! :)

Converting a bunch of 4E players to PF after GMing Frostfur Captives for them. :)

Seeing all the awesome unique magic items for auction at Gencon 2012 (that I couldn’t afford).

Meeting various forum personalities at Gencon (well, sometimes I knew them but they didn’t know me. Everyone is too busy at Gencon).

Getting the killing blow on a dragon.

Living through “Temple of EE” with our only healer being a Wizard (me), with Infernal Healing (wand) running on each and every PC and NPC. Using line of sight and range to avoid damage. 15 rounds of combat total.

Making friends with a lizardman tribe by spitting on each other. Taking linguistics afterwards to learn the language.

Kicking the **** out of King of the Storval Stairs and finding out later that it was a killer scenario.

The generous boons and prizes at Origins 2012, made the trip worth it. Also, I really enjoyed meeting the people there.

Getting GMed by top designers (like Mike Kortes)! In the future I think it would be fun to play at tables with Eric Mona, Jason Bulmahn, Mike Moreland, James Jacobs, Mike Brock, Pett + more! That would make almost any convention worth it.

Playing at a table of great GMs, who imo also make the best players!

Having a kid do his own solo mission during a PFS scenario, when everyone else is doing the main mission.

Joining a game with strangers at Origins in an empty slot and it being a great time.
^^^ To me, that's what conventions are about.

Sorry, Fromper, I'm in Denver.

But if you want to come to Genghis Con the weekend of February 14-17 and GM for us, I'll happily lend it to you (-:
