Thanks a bunch for the suggestions guys. I will see how many of these I can track down. :)
Freehold, your interpretation of Gundam Wing and mine are a bit different I think. It has been a few years since I watched it though, so I'll look at it again before I show it to the kidlet. It might still be a bit old for him. It's always a fine line to walk trying to figure out what is and is not age appropriate for him to watch.
that's more than fair. Keep in mind my experience with wing is from fansubs, sure things were cleaned up for the dub and they(gundam boys) were made akin to freedom fighters. Also, as this is a young kid, I would also suggest g gundam, as it was also made for a young audience.

G gundam...got it. I will look for that one.
Yeah, thinking about it more he might not be ready for gundam wing. It's hard to figure out who the good guys are since there really aren't any. And at ten he still likes his morality in black and white. :)

Did anyone else snag all of the jaeger cards? The theater I went to had baseball card-style tradable cards with stats for the different jaegers. Apparently, there was a Japanese jaeger that either wasn't in the movie or was seen so briefly they never called it out.
This was the first movie I've ever seen at IMAX and I've got to say, if you've never been to an IMAX theater and you're not lucky enough to live near a Cinerama, this is the movie to watch on that screen. Just pay the extra $10 or whatever it is and bask in the glory of giant robot on kaiju mayhem. Besides, the more money this thing makes, the better the odds we get that Mountains of Madness movie. It's like a kickstarter.
Based on this, I'm pretty pumped for next year's Godzilla reboot. Legendary, who also put out Pacific Rim, hired Gareth Edwards (director/writer of Monsters) to direct Godzilla, and it's going to feature multiple kaiju.

well you need to gauge your enemies somehow...

Ok, saw it. My initial thoughts.
The feel of the story never really settled. Everytime Idris Elba was on screen it felt like it wanted to be taken seriously. Anytime Charlie Day was on screen it felt like they didn't want to be. Humor is great, but they should take a lesson from Tony Stark in Iron Man/Avengers on how to do it without taking you out of the movie.
The wrong person was the main character. Mako should have really been who the movie was about, her character was much more interesting. Most main characters heroes are more interesting if the audience sees them go from inexperience and unsure of themselves to capable and confident.
I would have liked more done with the other Jaegar teams, especially the Russians. I would have especially liked to see more women Jaegar drivers developed in the story. Too much sausage-fest.

True, but most movies if they don't make a big splash that first weekend tend to fade quickly. They don't usually get more popular, but instead less.

Saw this film last weekend rather than this week (realised I was at Paizocon UK this weekend so something had to be done :-).
I loved it, with (minor) caveats.
I got the see it in Vue Xtreme 3D, which was definitely the best way to see it, outside proper IMAX.
The 3D was completely appropriate and helped immerse the viewer in the action. I never thought any detail was lost in darkness despite 3D being dimmer with glasses.
The plot was good, not amazing, but good. It took a bit to get past all the introductions and set up stuff (first fight involving Gipsy Danger notwithstanding) before really getting going, but I wasn't bored. It increased the believability of the setting to be honest - we knew the world was on a precipice of doom. Once we got to the HK Shatterdome everything was in top gear and stayed there. Didn't notice the time passing at all.
All of the characters were believable and had a reason to be in the film, and if they weren't fully three dimensional (that's the SFX), they didn't come across as cardboard cut-outs either. The weakest link I'm afraid is Raleigh - he was a bit predictable to be honest, but offsetting that were the fabulous Stacker Pentecost and Newton Geiszler, the mad scientist - these great characters came from great performances by Idris Elba and whoever that other guy was. Charlie Hunnam wasn't bad in this, but what he had to work with was a little bit formulaic unfortunately (although the Drift sequences and associated psychology was pretty cool/interesting/evocative).
After which, we get to the real star of this picture and it's the CGI-heavy action scenes. Some might take that as a pretty harsh criticism, but it's anything but. I have not grinned ear-to-ear like I did during this film since Avengers Assembled. And AA is my favourite film of ALL TIME.
The scenes thrilled, surprised, delighted, entertained and AMAZED without exception. Standout (spoilerific) sequences (from the first major battle only!) include:
Crimson Typhoon
Cherno Alpha
Gipsy Danger
A kaiju
American football
There's more, obviously
I've taken too long with this so I'll leave it there.
tl;dr version: If thinking about giant robots makes you smile, go see it, you will want to see it again and then you'll buy the Blu-ray. Probably on 3D.

Lynora, you might want to check out Mazinger Z. However, I would look for the Japanese or South American version of it since the American version got... ~tries to think of a polite term~ butchered and shortened. I loved watching it as a kid and I even learned Spanish to understand it (I was in South America at the time). Granted, the last time I watched it was over 30 years ago, and yet I still remember enjoying it.

It'll be interesting to see how well the film does in Japan (it doesn't arrive until 9 August). It's getting lots of advance press over there and people Hideo Kojima bigging it up will likely draw a lot of interest. Success in Japan won't save a film if it's tanking elsewhere of course, but it can certainly help (especially if the break-even margin is tiny).
One problem with the film's prospects (middling so far) seems to be launching in a busy season: too many big kids films around, too many comedies (there's a lot of excitement here in the UK for THE WORLD'S END, out tomorrow) and too many blockbusters (with MAN OF STEEL mopping up a lot of casual viewers a few weeks back). The name draw is also problematic: I think the studio was banking on Del Toro's name too much, and Del Toro's name means nothing to the average cinema-goer (there's very few directors who do, to be honest). Also, they seem to have failed to mobilise the same people who went to see TRANSFORMERS, indicating people are either bored of giant robot movies or only interested if it ties in with some kid's show they watched almost 30 years ago.
I think the film will probably break even at the box office and then do very well on DVD and Blu-Ray. A late surge cannot be ruled out, and the word of mouth on the film has been excellent, but it's very unusual for that to happen in the cinema. Del Toro and Legendary both seem keen to do the sequel, but that's only realistic if the movie makes a substantial amount more than its budget (twice the budget is usually the golden figure, since that will also cover marketing).
Hopefully I should be seeing it tomorrow :)

Saw it yesterday.
I thought it was fun but too much fighting cut the time to really explore some of the cool ideas (cross-planar hive-mind communication!)
After watching, I was chatting with my fiance and realised the film this really reminded me of: Top Gun.
I thought Top Gun was better though: I cared more about those characters.
I can totally see why the Mecha / Kaiju fans on here are geeking out. It's your victory dance.
I thought the monsters were pretty cool but CGI robots clubbing things got boring pretty fast. The 'we've got an app for that' path to victory didn't thrill me either: glad at the end that some true grit was applied.
I enjoyed it though, lots of neat ideas, incidental detail and mini character arcs. Perlman's character was great too.

Seen it yesterday (local preview). And while I dislike the robot genre, I love Kaiju. Victory dance, yes !
Original version, undubbed and the cinema was still packed at 30°C outside and with a rare balmy night..... And the only major blockbuster this summer where the audience went into "spontaneous applaude" mode, despite the hectic 3D scenes which are usually a major turn-off. Beat "Iron Man 3", trashed "ST -Into Darkness" and even comparing it to Man of Steel seems like an insult (Which barely lasted a week around here, anyways), mostly due to the skills of delToro, who seemed like a major draw to the audience (as the discussions in the Lounge before and after showed ).
My brother who tagged along simply called it "the only thing worth watching this summer" and "almost up to Hellboy-standards". Heck, even the girls/wifes who had tagged along were pretty much enchanted
so.. thanks for having delToro put in charge of it and for once making it worth to pay a bunch of Euros each . Best call for director this summer.
Could someone now hustle him back to the "mountains of Madness" set ? He should be quite up to speed for some glorious otherworldy monsters^^
*asks nicely for a Shoggoth-Kaiju*

I guess I just don't feel quite as strongly about it as you. I don't really see the need for them to be forgiven at all, given that it was a different time, and most anime to come over through the 80s and early 90s was pretty strongly reworked anyway.
Harmony Gold are pieces of s***. Not for what they did with the Frankenstein monster which is Robotech, but for litigating against the distribution of any Macross materials outside of the Japanese market. Since their corporate overlords at Hasbro have more money for expensive lawyers, they can stop and have stopped Macross of getting international recognition.

I saw it this morning. It was pretty okay.
I don't think it was really based on a true story. Thus, I think they used some CGI or claymation or something for the effects.
Also, when we get the tech for robots? They should use them to land on Mars or something useful. (Not that fighting the aliens isn't important.)
From the conversations I have heard is that the only reason we don't have these mechs now is money.
Before it was that they would be too heavy/week and would collapse on their own weight with the materials available.
I heard recently that there has been improvements in metal material tech.
So I don't think giant robots really are all that far off, just like the space station from 2001 probably could have been made in 2001, but we just don't have the money. With this dire of a situation, money isn't an issue.

Saw it tonight...I preference this by saying I am not a fan of the big mecha stories to start with. So yes I do think Iron Man 3 is a much better film...and War World Z was a better film.
But I enjoyed this movie. It was very good. I just can't get into Giant mecha for a number of reasons I won't go in here. But it was defintly a fun movie.
Also personaly I think if they do a sequal it should focus on a certain character looking for his shoe...and the character who has his shoe...I think such a movie would be hilarious.
