In light of Brock's ruling allowing group-level bans I started working with my local group to create a banlist and a sort of group "gaming constitution".

This is going to include everything from banned/limited classes and archetypes, to feats and spells, to general rules about behavior/attendance/DMing expectations.

Has anyone else considered such a thing? If so, would you mind sharing?

I'll post mine here once it's done.

Why do you feel the need to create a list of banned material? If you feel the rules for PFS are too liberal, then why not just play a non-PFS home-game? You won't be able to employ such a restriction list at public events, so you will still get exposed to the things you feel should be banned. Unless, of course, you never play anywhere except within your private group, in which case again, why disguise yourself as a PFS group anyway?

I guess I just do not understand the point. The only rule/s I would have for my private PFS group (if I had one) would be, bring something to contribute to the community snack fund, and put the toilet seat/lid down when you're done.

I'm curious where/when Mike said such a thing.

Liberty's Edge 5/5 **

Because we still play outside our group as well. We enjoy the modular aspect of the campaign and attend conventions and larger game days. You meet some great people and have some amazing experiences playing outside your comfort zone sometimes - you also have some really bad experiences.

These rules would be for when we play among ourselves and allow us to create our 'ideal' gaming environment.

I understand if this isn't for you. I'd like to have an open discussion with the community that does want to discuss this.

Agreed.

Since every character option that isn't in use at a given table may as well be banned, declaring something as such is unnecessary. If you and your friends want to set your own restrictions for what choices you will and won't make for your characters, and you want to maintain control of these group decisions by having a private game that you know no one who doesn't share your vision will impose upon, then by all means, do so.

We've made our stance on this clear.

If this thread devolves into anything less than pure smiles and sunshine, we'll lock this thread as well.

Perhaps a better place for this would be the homebrew forum, as that's ultimately what it's a discussion of, rather than a specific Pathfinder Society discussion.

5/5

My list would be extremely short. I could care less about what class your playing. There are only two things banned at my tables: overly annoying people and Dragnmoon.

Wait, that's only one thing.

Let me reemphasize from my first post:

In a private game, because of the tacit agreement between the GMs and players to participate at all in the private environment, you may place whatever additional restrictions you want on the game because everyone who is present at the private event is understood to have agreed to those restrictions. To clarify, if a player wishes to impose additional penalties or restrictions on his or her character, that is the players prerogative.

This DOES NOT mean you can run an official PFS game with fewer restrictions than are outlined in the Organized Play Guide or other campaign documentation. For example, you can not run an evil character, you can not use Words of Power or Hero Points, or any other specific rules that are not permitted in the campaign.

I just wanted to understand why someone feels this is necessary. In any case, my fear is that this discussion will lose focus (as forum threads tend to do) and will mislead readers into thinking they can freely change PFS guidelines if they conceal it behind the "home-game" tag.

Mark, I know this is going to be a sensitive subject for some. However, it's for PFS and for a subsection of PFS. Instead of squelching this whole thread, why not censor those who come post off topic or inflammatory posts?

I actually like both of these. Unfortunately, a couple people in my group are in a perpetual state of financial instability and I wouldn't want to put them in a tougher spot.

How sad is it that I'm actually considering adding the second one? =/

Not when you come on all of them and make comments like that. You're not invited to my home game any more.

And when you play outside your private play group in a private setting, such as your own home, with a controlled group of friends. the PFS rules are followed and any character class, race, concept, etc... that is legal will not be banned from play. That is the difference between public and private play.

Unless anyone here posting is going to be playing in your private home setting, by invite only from you, there is no need to post your personal home ban list because it applies to no one here.

Dark Archive 1/5

Some people want to trumpet what they dislike. Oooo look we banned this in our PFS homegame.

Whatever. People can go all hermit and hide in their caves. I don't want to hear about it.

What I find really amusing is now that the edition wars have pretty much wound down and we're becoming one big happy disfunctional family once more some are looking to sow dissention in the ranks yet again.

I may not like your character choice but I'm pretty sure I can game with you without bringing my baggage to the table.

Feral wrote:

If you actually have to codify that into your group's gaming laws, then you might have bigger issues than restricting supposed "broken" game mechanics.

Isn't that against the PFS rules? If I show up with a legal character, don't you have to run a game for me? Even at 3 a.m. when I nudge you awake from your dreams of Wicked coming to Seattle?

What if you're at a convention and you've already checked out of your hotel, but the shuttle isn't scheduled to come for several more hours?

Hmmm if I banned Dragnmoon from my table I would feel like I would be missing almost 1/3 of my PFS games, since he is my CON GM. He did try to kill me more times than I can remember...

Wouldn't it be better to encourage him to play at your table? After a few sessions, you would permanently kill all of his characters and assuming that he's running out of scenarios to play, he would just go away. ;-)

Those aren't just dreams! Not only is it coming to Seattle, but it'll be here for over a month (Oct 10-Nov 17). link.

It would probably be something more general like, "Be mindful of the home and property of session's host. Leave everything cleaner than it was when you arrived and treat the host's home with respect."

My group is fairly mature but sometimes people need a reminder.

I have gotten so tired of the 'took an arrow in the knee' jokes that I had to tell a couple of the kids who play at my venue that there was a rule against 'arrow in the knee' jokes in PFS. I know, its wrong, but that joke was making me want to punch (those) little kids in the face. And I dont think anyone wants that. (Right?)

Hi

So, advertising games on a public server, asking publicly for players, but still banning certain legal classes, is that considered a 'Home Game'?

Talking playing online here, not in someone's home.

Thanks

The reality is, you could just as easily swing your banhammer around for a public event as for a private one, but players are much less likely to accept it. Inviting someone into your house, but restricting them from legal material, is somewhat tolerated by the community. It is, afterall, your house, which seems to afford you a marginal level of deviation from the standard guidelines (more restrictive rules, no time limits, freedom to explore side-trek material, etc). However, a public event (even one online) is expected to be accessible to anyone in the community regardless of character choice, assuming they do not have a history of being a jerk. Placing restrictions in that venue is very likely going to earn you a "jerk GM/organizer" tag and have a negative impact on growing/sustaining your game.

Every time I kill a PC I say, "Kyle Happens". I need to get that on a t-shirt.

It's kind of funny how Kyle is becoming an urban legend in PFS...

Did you guys hear that Kyle collects the character sheets from all the PCs he kills that aren't Raised and pins them on his bedroom ceiling? He said that it helps him go to sleep happy and wake up with a purpose. Many times he doesn't even need to roll the damage, players just accept the inevitable and hand him their character sheets.

Actually Greg Vaughan got the idea for that creature from Kyle's baby pictures. He was very colic-y... Kyle, not Greg.
