Components V, S, M (a ball of bat guano burnt in a chunk of dried lava)

Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Area 20-ft.-radius spread
Duration 1 round/level

DESCRIPTION

You briefly open a small rift to the Elemental Plane of Fire where molten lava bursts out at incredible pressure.

Everything in the area of effect is coated by lava unless they make a Reflex save. On a failed Reflex save creatures and objects are coated with Lava and take 1d6 per caster level (maximum 20d6). Creatures and objects that fail their Reflex save must also resist a bull rush attempt as the force of the lava from the rift. The CMB for this bull rush is equal to your caster level plus your Intelligence modifier.

Creatures and objects that successfully saved that remain in the area of effect take 1d6 per three caster levels at the end of their turn.

The lava remains in the area for 1 round per caster level until the lava cools.

Creatures and objects that failed their save take 1d6 per two caster levels each round until they remove the the lava.

Removing the lava is a full-round action that provokes an attack of opportunity during which you still take damage (1d6 per three caster levels). At the end of this turn you can make a DC 15 Reflex save to also put yourself out, otherwise you are still on fire.

Ice Storm reduces all damage for those inside by half.

same base damage as DBF at a level below, but save avoids. add bull rush and DOT, with no spell resistance, plus ice storm interaction... it's fairly powerful, but not insanely so. it's blasting with elements of lockdown and area denial...

i like it. not sure it's balanced, but i do really like the concept of the spell and its effects.


Once its balanced you could make a version of it for each elemental plane. Was thinking of spell that would stop the rift from opening that would counter the spell completely.

Do you think it should be level 8 instead of 7?

Its Conjuration so there's no SR. If it was a Figment or something they yeah it would have SR.


well, it does a lot and does it well, but i don't really think it's that over the top as a 7th level spell. the raw damage comparison is with Delayed Blast fireball, but i'd hardly consider that fair as in my opinion DBF is massively overlevel for what it does.
only reason i'd up it to 8 is that it ignores spell resistance, which is very powerful.


But its Conjuration...like Acid Arrow. There's real Lava that's there, that's my justification for no SR.

i understand and agree with the no spell resistance, but it was just a bit too powerful for level seven at a glance.


What if I reduced the range to Close to keep it at 7th? As a 7th level spell the spellcaster will be as least level 13 and have a Close range of 55-feet (25 + 5/two levels).


interesting idea. i like it a lot, as ripping the very fabric of existance apart should be harder the further you are away.

so lets recap: good damage,
ignores spell resistance,
good-sized area,
short range,
minor area denial,
continues to deal damage for several rounds... maybe half the duration as well, though to be honest that'll rarely come up...
bull rush attempts against anyone who fails their save,
successful save avoids all damage.

not shabby and a solid spell in the arsonal of any blaster, but not an i win button at the level you get it. i think that you're onto a winner here.

out of curiosity, where are you going to use this? are you playing or dming?


I saw another thread talking about Fireball and I recalled a conversation of a friend of mine in another group that traveling in the Negative Energy plane... and then **poof**, got the idea for this spell.

Oh one more edit since Lava can go around corners.

back in three point five there was the exploding spell metamagic, which basically blew everyone in the radius of a spell to the edge of the area. was a vital part of the locate city nuke, if i remember correctly.

Your component is a bit wonky. Why not a piece of obsidian or pumice? Bat guano has nothing to do with lava, that is fireball territory.

1 standard action seems pretty quick to open a rift to another plane.

I know you think long range was pushing the distance, but why not medium?

Make sure the damage is listed as fire damage.

If the rift is being held open for the duration? Why is the lava not spreading each round?

Check out the the Core Rulebook, Ch. 13 Enviroment, the Lava Effects section. You could have referenced this to help clarify your spell. Maybe even lower the level.
