Would a Hat of Disguise (or the Disguise self spell for that matter) conceal the presence of Ioun Stones?
could it alter the appearance of the TYPE of Ioun Stones?
what about placing Continual Flame on an Ioun Stone - producing something that looks like an Ioun Torch, but is also an active Ioun Stone?
I would be interested in any other ideas involving the interaction of Hat of Disguise and Ioun Stones.
THANKS!

Too lazy to look up Hat of Disguise. I'd say no since the description of Ioun Stone (which I read yesterday) states that you release it and it orbits 1 to 3 feet from your head. It's wording doesn't sound like it is part of your gear but rather an effect that follows you.
I have nothing official for you though.

Tricky stuff. Here are the relevant bits; bolding mine:
You make yourself - including clothing, armor, weapons, and equipment - look different.
You could add or obscure a minor feature or look like an entirely different person or gender.
So the hat can affect equipment, making it to look like something else. Some might say that Ioun stones are a "minor feature" and so could be "obscured" somehow but personally I think it's a stretch to say that they can be rendered effectively invisible.
IMHO, I'd say that their appearance can be changed however you like as long as they continue to circle your character and aren't bigger than 1 foot in size (the maximum size increase allowed by the spell). So they could be made to look like different Ioun stone types, circling insects, small birds, or floating skulls.
Continual flame can be placed on an object, so there's no reason that any Ioun stone can't be made into a Ioun Torch with a simple casting.Cast light instead if you want the effect to be temporary, and cheaper.

I'm going to say no. Ioun stones orbit a distance from your body, so they're not affected by the Hat of Disguise. You want to keep them a secret.... get a wayfinder.
actually - I want to change the way they appear. or add them if they are not there. or know if they can be altered. I just figured hat if they CAN'T be changed, it would be a great way to determine if someone is real - do they have the correct Ioun Stones? "That's not Joe! shot him! - It's not got his Ioun Stones!"

could I change the appearance of an Ioun stone so that it appears to be an Ioun Torch? Would it actually light the area?

Remember, a hat of disguise makes you look different, it doesn't make you feel different. Throw a bit of flour at a disguised person, and the illusion is more or less revealed.
I would think the spell could cover a bit of flour - thou if you "interact with the spell" - (and I have had DMs rule that if you look at the person you are interacting with the spell) u would get a save vs. spell DC11.

Of course it's up to the GM, but since the spell description says that it can add "a minor feature" it might be possible to create the illusion of some Ioun stones (or any other trinket) floating around the wearer.

I'd say no, since the ability to create light where there is no light is the province of other spells.
Throw a bit of flour at a disguised person, and the illusion is more or less revealed.
Or just frisk the guy like a TSA agent.

nosig wrote:I would think the spell could cover a bit of flourIt could; effectively disguising yourself as someone not covered in flour. But it'd take an action for the hat wearer to change his disguise appropriately.
I think the spell would cover the change - unless you made the save. Otherwise, things like the wind blowing and waving a cape (part of the disguise) would be a problem. At most, it only gives +10 on a disguise anyway.
But like most Illusion spells, it's very much open to Judge interpretations.
YMMV. but I was hoping to get several different sets of imput on the interaction between Ioun Stones and the Hat of Disguise, rather than the effects of the spell Disguise Self (which is an entirely different can of worms).
