Breathing an air elemental

Rules Questions

I'm wondering whether an air-deprived character could breathe the substance of a friendly air elemental. That is to say, could a spellcaster summon one or more air elementals and ask it/them, to encircle his or another creature's head and then breathe normally while underwater? Of course, the elemental's substance would slowly grow stale and eventually poisonous as it is slowly transformed into a carbon-dioxide elemental. ;)

*files this under the same tab as "Summon Water Elemental, then summon a dire shark inside it" and "Summon Water Elemental, cast that Water->Booze spell"*

maybe, keep in mind the description of the air elemental says two important things that should be considered. One, that they "resent being summoned or doing the bidding of mortals" which means they might just decide in an inopportune moment to buffet the character. Which leads me to the second description issue. They vary a lot, some of them are made of smoke. You might not want to breathe it. Might be worse than drowning. It might cause that now upset elemental, who hates water by the way, to attack summoning spell be damned.

"An air elemental can move underwater, and although it is an elemental and thus runs no risk of drowning, it has no ranks in Swim and loses much of its speed and mobility when underwater."

No more than you could stick your head up a flatulent ogre's behind (even a friendly ogre) and expect to be able to breathe.

Also, remember that they are creatures made of enough substance to be damaged by physical weapons, so that would prohibit the actual breathing of its body.

And even if you COULD breathe in the summoned air elemental (which, I agree with Nebelwerfer that you can't because it isn't just air, it is "living air" with a solid form, and if you could breathe it in then everyone just got a stupidly powerful new attack to use against air elementals... grapple + breathe), what happens when the duration of the spell runs out, and the air which has been keeping you alive is ripped back to the Plane of Air?
