Now on an alien kick...

Selenites: From The First Men in the Moon by H. G. Wells. An medium insectoid race that lives on the moon. In the book, the moon gets bright and unleashes an alien forest where they live.

Wow I just watched the movie version just last week.

Well if we're on the subject of aliens, has anyone else read The Forever War?

The Taurans would make for interesting inspiration I think. Acidic bubbles could probably be used as a cone-shaped breath weapon or as a terrain-altering affect (perhaps creating slow-moving large bubbles of acid, similar in function to the Pleroma Aeon from B2's Sphere of Oblivion, only far less deadly.

The Teddybears from the same story too. More annoying than dangerous, but perhaps with dangerous consequences for those who kill them to get them out of the way.

Very early on we chose to walk away from many past RPG's vision of the fey

Speaking as a customer who only buys setting-neutral material and does not get the APs: That idea did not come across in the bestiaries. I got the impression the fey ruling class--Queen Mab or Queen Titania for example--were missing.

Now that you explain it, I appreciate more what you are trying to do, but I'm still a little foggy on how the fey are organized in PF.

As for the Tane, here's another great example of us wanting to take our fey, their creations, and the First World in new directions. We've published stats for all of the Tane originally mentioned in Pathfinder #2. So, the trick now is how to naturally add more. I have no interest in just throwing three more big monsters into a Bestiary (a hardcover or AP Bestiary) and say "Oh yeah, these monsters you've never...

PF #2 might be the missing piece for me as I only get the hardbacks. I first saw The Tane in Bestiary 2 and 3 where I was impressed by the concept. Help on using them in non-Golarion campaigns would be GREATLY appreciated.

For them to have stats for the fairy Queen(Titania, Queen Mab, etc.)they would need stats for actual faeries. Wich of course would be nice to have the stats too.

I would love some more Tane.

This news makes my cryptid-loving, Coleman and Keel reading heart happy. Maybe youguys should get a copy of "The Field Guide to Bigfoot and other Mystery Primates Worldwide" and see about using it for inspiration. It'd be awesome to see what could be done with the Fear Liath More AKA Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui.

I agree on the Fear Liath Mor, could be turned into a nice creature!

Here are some mythical creatures I could see making interesting bestiary entries:

Abaia: a giant eel that can pursue opponents onto land by calling forth a roving wave of flood waters.
Bakonawa: a dragon that causes eclipses; sort of a living, draconic analog to the tzitzimitl.
Buggane: a burrowing, swimming ogre that works as an enforcer for hags and fey.
Cherufe: a creature made of molten magma that dwells in volcanos and demands human sacrifices in its honor.
Empusa: a woman with flaming hair, bronze hooves for feet, and the ability to cause sleep paralysis; probably a type of lamia, given her origin.
Galatea: a sentient stone idol brought to life by the devotion of its worshipers.
Geryon (the Greek myth version, not the D&D version): a giant with three heads and three bodies. Probably a weaker, mortal cousin of the hekatonchiere, in the same way giants are weaker, mortal cousins of ordinary titans.
Ichneumon: an earth-encrusted, dragon-slaying creature from medieval bestiaries.
Ipotane (or Silenius): an outsider that serves as a drunken reveler in the retinues of wine gods and similar beings.
Kamaitachi: a lightning-fast flying weasel that creates mirror images of itself while ripping foes to shreds in an awesome blur of fury.
Kuchisake: meaning "Slit Mouth," a ghost (or possibly a kyton) with a mutilated mouth and a pair of scissors it uses to attack its victims.
Lampade: an underword nymph from the retinue of a witch-goddess, known for carrying lanterns whose light can drive mortals insane.
Llorona: a.k.a. weeping woman; a skeleton in a white dress that disguises itself as a living woman to lure victims closer, at which point it grapples and drowns them.
Maenad (the Greek myth version, not the D&D version): drunken, raging women (possibly fey) that tear apart their prey with their bare hands.
Makara: a crocodile-fish that disgorges summoned monsters from its mouth when threatened.
Morgen: the namesake of Morgan le Fey, a race of high-CR fey with healing powers and a "fata morgana" ability that creates semi-real illusory terrain.
Namazu: a giant fish that creates earthquakes, tsunamis, and similar effects.
Peuchen: a flying snake with a paralytic gaze; possibly a low-CR dragon.
Raiju: a flying thunder beast with a combination of electricity, fire, and sonic attacks, making it an energy-themed monster that isn't a one-trick pony.
Talos: A mid- to high-CR construct with wings, so higher-level PCs can't just fly around it to reach whatever it's guarding.
Ushabti: A swarm of miniature construct servitors for the dead pharaoh who has everything.
Xana: a fey bound and corrupted by a curse inherent to her kind, giving PCs the chance to either fight her or transform her into a gentler fey by lifting her curse.

Some North America monsters:

Mahaha (aka Tickling Demon)

Quote:

Mahaha is a maniacal demon that terrorized parts of the arctic. This creature is described as a thin sinewy being, ice blue in colour and cold to the touch. Mahaha’s eyes are white and they peer through the long stringy hair that hangs in its face. This demon is always smiling and giggling. It is strong, very strong and it is always barefoot. Mahaha is usually seen with almost no clothing on yet it never seems to be bothered by the cold. This cold demon takes pleasure in tickling its victims to death with sharp vicious nails attached to its long bony fingers. Many elders have remarked on the expression of the dead victims Mahaha leaves behind. It seems all of the victim have a similar expression on their dead faces – a twisted frozen smile.

Although this demon is twisted and evil, Mahaha is easily fooled. Most of the stories told about Mahaha end with it being fooled. Usually Mahaha is tricked into leaning over a water hole to take a drink and is pushed into the open water and swept away by the currents.

So if Mahaha ever corners you alone, ask it to have one last drink with you by the water hole before it tickles you to death.

Ijiraat

Quote:

The Ijiraat are the shape-shifters. These land spirits are elusive and can transform into any arctic animal to disguise themselves. Most often they take the shape of a raven, bear, wolf or even a human. The only part of the Ijiraat that it cannot disguise is its red eyes. In all of it forms, both human and animal, its eyes always remain red.

These hidden creatures are portrayed as evil and malicious in many stories. These stories warn that the Ijiraat lie in wait for lone travelers, changing shape to fool and get close to the travelers.

Some elders argue that these land spirits and are not inherently evil, but rather misunderstood. One elder warned that these spirits are surrounded by mirages. When mountains or islands on the horizon look bigger or closer than they really are, an Ijiraat might be near. It seems some elders believe that the Ijiraat often appear to bring messages to travelers.

Although many interpretations of the Ijiraat exist, one thing seems to be certain: After an encounter with the Ijiraat people tend to experience memory loss and quickly forget the details of what happened.

If you ever encountered an Ijiraat, remember to talk to as many people as possible before you memory begins to fail and you forget the experience.

Taqriaqsuit

Quote:

The Taqriaqsuit are also known as the shadow people. They live like we do in a world like our own. Their world, however, is beyond our perception. They are almost never seen, but sometimes when conditions are right the Taqriaqsuit can be heard. Have you ever heard the sounds of footsteps or the sound of talking or laughing in the distance but see no one around? Maybe it was the Taqriaqsuit.

Sometimes these shy beings are noticed or people sense their presence. When this happens, the Taqriaqsuit seem to disappear into the ground and vanish. Stories tell us that some Inuit have crossed over into their world, but few have ever returned to tell us what it is like.

If the Taqriaqsuit invited you to crossover into their world for a visit, would you go?

Qallupilluk

Quote:

These are marine creatures of the cold arctic waters. They are often described as having scaly and bumpy skin, not unlike a scalpin. It is said that these ugly creatures reek of sulfur.

The Qallupilluk is a child-snatcher. No one really knows why these creatures love to take children. Perhaps they take children because they are lonely and like the company, or maybe they like how children taste?

Many stories of the Qallupilluk tell of them wearing eider duck clothing with large pouches on their back to carry children in. The Qallupilluk hides in the ocean, waiting for children to play alone on the beach or near the breaking ice.

Usually the Qallupilluk jump out of the water and grab children without any warning. Sometimes, however, you can hear them knocking under the ice. Some elders have said that if the ocean begins to become wavy in an area or steam begins to rise from the ocean, a Qallupilluk might be hiding underneath the water.

One thing is certain, whether a Qallupilluk is hiding in the water or not, it is never safe to play alone on the beach or near the broken pans of sea ice.

Inupasugjuk

Quote:

The Inupasugjuk are northern giants. Very little is known of these huge creatures. Inupasugjuk are rarely seen and almost never talked about by elders. It seems the males are larger and less common than the females. Very little is known of the males. Perhaps that is because no one has ever survived to talk about them?

Female Inupasugjuk seem to be more common. These Inupasugjuk find humans amusing and will catch them to use as playthings. Some elders warn that the females will grab people and carry them away in their amoutiqs.

If you ever see an Inupasugjuk, crouch down and remain very still, your best chance of escape is to avoid being seen.

Tuniit

Quote:

These are the people who lived in the north before the Inuit. These beings spoke a simple language, sometimes referred to as “Kutak” or “baby-talk”. The Tuniit were a peaceful people who minded their own business, if left alone. Artifacts of the Tuniit can be found all over the north.

The Tuniit were the same height as regular people; however, they were thick and extremely strong. If angered, the Tuniit were a powerful enemy.

If you ever come across a thick and strong person dressed in skins and using the tools of our ancestors, it might be the Tuniit! If this being speaks to you, answer slowly and don’t use big words.

Of course, you may want to alter the names slightly, but there's some cool stuff in a lot of the North American mythologies.

I really wish they had a Hag subtype.

Ooh, good point. We've still got Dust, Steam, Ooze and Salt Mephits, so there's precedent for there also being Dust, Steam, Ooze and Salt Elementals.

Not to mention more planar-themed sorts, like Negative and Positive Energy elementals, or First World elementals or Shadow Plane elementals, or some that play on the different elemental schemes of distant lands, like Metal, Plant/Wood and Void elementals...

Mmm. Void elementals. Yum.

Elementals are also easy as pie to template up. Make an earth elemental from graveyard soil, and give it some undead-themed / necromantic abilities, or a celestial 'sun' elemental from a fire elemental with some traits from the celestial bloodline, celestial template, archon/angel subtype, etc. or a 'hellfire' elemental that does half fire damage and half profane damage and can smite good.

Most of that is too basic to be a worthy monster entry though. It's just kit-bashing ingredients already present into new dishes.

====================================================

I Say a BIG yes to all these monsters, they all sound good to me! The upper two + of course Namazu are top of the list.

Many greek monsters, but not Argus, don't you like Argus or did you forget about it?

Also Ladon is missing from that greek monster list.

BTW. Ooze Elemental? Isn't that just an ordinairy ooze but than a elemental? Never understood Ooze Elementals, the others are all good tho.

Actually i'm in love with the Kamaitachi or better for Pathfinder, the Sickle Weasel!!

Isn't that the best forgotten creature like ever?

I would like it to have mirror image-powers and super swiftness, also its arms ending in scythe-like weapons.

Picture of the Sickle Weasel:

+1 to that idea, definitely.

Well you might consider all creatures of the Fey creature type fairies, because in this context fey is just another word for fairy. However, if you mean fairies as in small, winged fey then sprites would pretty much fit that bill.

Traditionally "fairies" (faeries) are one specific type, while "fey" (fae) represents the overall group. I get the impression that that's what they were going for with the fey creature type.

On the above note, I definitely want to see more fey. Bestiary 3 did a great job of covering them compared to bestiaries 1 and 2 (that's pretty much the main reason that 3 is my favourite bestiary), but it's mostly touched on just the traditional, small fae.

The Tane start to get into the truly bizarre, dangerous, and downright insane (by human standards) that powerful fae are capable of, and yet they're magical beasts, dragons, plants, and non-fae creatures that simply come from the same world. Now I think we need to see some more of what the actual dangerous fae are capable of.

No, that's actually not true at all. Fey is a synonym for fairy.

...My opinion strongly differs from yours on that. This isn't the place for arguing such things though, I'd probably get nasty, and I don't think that would change someone's opinion anyways. My general pathfinder-related point remains, being that now that we've got powerful non-fae creatures from the first world I'd like to see some more powerful fae. I'll leave it at that.

It's not my opinion, it's the definition of the word. Saying that they're in anyway different is basically like saying that a cat, a gato and a neko are different things.

Isn't semantics fascinating?

Hey, all I did was point out to someone that what he wanted might already be in the game...

If I may, 'fey' is not a synonym for 'fairy'. Gluttony has the right of it, fae is a blanket term that covers faeries, pixies, sprites, and all manner of other creatures. Please, do you research before you try to speak as an expert on such matters.

lordzack wrote:

She.

Anyways, putting semantics aside for a moment, my point is that no, there isn't really much of that in the game so far. The most powerful first-world creatures (by far) are the Tane. Most of the creatures that actually have the fey creature type are relatively weak. There are only two fey creature type monsters in the bestiaries that are even at or above CR10, those being the Nereid from B2, a CR 10 exactly, and the Rusalka from B3, and it's only CR 12. If you add in monsters from APs we get one more, the Ankou from AP36, and that's still only a CR 14.

What I'm hoping for is one or two high-CR fey creature type monsters. Something in the CR 18 to CR 20+ range. And we haven't got that yet.

Fairy is also a blanket term that covers many creatures including pixies and sprites. Sometimes even goblins, gnomes, sidhe, elves, dwarves... They aren't a specific type of fey creature. The two words can pretty much be used interchangeably.

Kinda sorry I dragged this out, but what I'm saying is true and I don't like people to tell me I'm using a word wrong when I'm not.

The Tanes are among the most powerful but there are unique linnorms such as Fafnir.

I mean Faerie as race of beings with the fey type nor faeries as all fey.

Modern versions have them as tiny humaniods with wings wich is one type I would like to see.

but older stories have them as 5ft tall very atractive humaniod creatures that looked more like elves. example would be the lady in the lake and kingdom she was from. This is also a version of Faeries I would like to see.

Differen't versions of a related group of fey with an actaul faerie queen(medium size with multi-colored wings) around CR 20. Weaker versions being more like sprites, atomies, pixies but with different abilities based on themes like nature, the elements, light, moon, the seasons, etc.

Also sprites aren't even close to what I am looking for since they are too weak and dumb. Pixies are closer in abilities but too big and have a lot of racial HD.

I wonder if Tanes can have the Fey type, that would be interesting.

Also like see some fey that are huge size or bigger, a few more large sized ones would be nice.

I actually like monstrous, less-fairy-pretty-woman fey creatures such as Kelpie and Nuckelavee and the Ankou of course.

I would like more of those monstrous fey, I'd have enough pretty girl fairy creatures to begin a unique army with.

Monstrous fey all the way!

(and of course the sickle weasel! still suprised it didn't showed up somewhere already as its such an amazing cool creature, i'm pretty curious what Wesley's excuse is for not having worked on the Sickle Weasel/Kamaitachi yet) ;-)

Humm... Moving on from fey, lycanthropes!

I'd like to see a wereleopard lycanthrope, as I think weretiger can easily be reskinned to cover "big cats" (as per the druid animal companion specifics), but that "small cats" (as per the same specifics) deserve their own form of lycanthropy.

...And yes I'm biased in favour of cats. :3

Also, weresharks! For the sake of an aquatic lycanthrope. (By that logic I guess I could argue some sort of flying lycanthrope too, but I can't think of anything that particularly interests me for that.

And wererhinos. I don't really think the game has a great need for them, but it would still amuse me to no end.

I love the "fairy-pretty-women-fey" and there is room for both them and the ugly-creature-eat your face-kidnap your children-kind as well. Also the crazy-doesn't take sides-dangerous joker-kind would nice to fill in that fun CN alignment.

Werebats, Werecats, Werewhatever, a few more Lyconthropes isn't going to hurt to add to this possible future product.

Some interesting parasitic creatures would be cool like ones that feed on knowledge, magic, talent, beauty, youth, emotions, etc. instead of blood, brains, skin, etc.

Some actual symbiotic lifeforms would interesting.

Um, isn't lycanthrope a template? As in you can already take any animal any use it with the template?

lordzack wrote:

Just a note... Not all the people buy these books for usage in games, some just collect them and for those buyers a template is a cheap page.

Anyway I want a werefox and maybe a wereshark but I think the Adaro is good enough already, werecats are not needed for me personally, but I like a werejaguar for the fun of it.

In creating the tuyewera for Pathfinder Adventure

to make something of a brand new creature, but one

The result is a fun way to make a monster—take
something from legend and adjust it or combine its
powers with other creatures from similar legends and
presto—new monster!

This comes from one of the AD books, why is it that this creature has this rule but other creatures from folklore must be 100% like their folklore counterparts? I wished every creature from folklore gained some abilities and new facts that they DON"T have in mythology/folklore to make them more awesome and more special.

For example the Argus shouldn't be pink-skinned... it should be peacock-feather colored, which peacock-feather eyes all over its body.

lordzack wrote:

There are five lycanthrope templates (or rather five examples of the template in action); werewolf and wererat in B1, and werebear, wereboar, and weretiger in B2. There are six lycanthropes if you count the jacakalwere in B3, though that one doesn't use a template.

None of those carry over well to sharks, and the template is one that applies to humanoids. As in you can't stick the lycanthropy template on a shark to get a wereshark.

And as I said, I only really want to see a wereleopard because I'm biased in favour of cats (especially leopards), and a wererhino because it would amuse me.

As for why I don't do it myself, well some of us unfortunately aren't as good at monster creation as paizo's professional design staff, and would rather leave it to them than attempt it ourselves and wind up with a result that's not as good.

I like the idea of lycanthropes based around other races. Elven were-vipers or were-owls (or, more Golarion-specific, were-wasps). Dwarven were-rams. Gnomish were-badgers or were-monkeys. Halfling were-panthers or were-foxes.

A simple template to allow any of these to be strapped onto a common humanoid race would be funky.

Tengu were-ravens might be seen less as 'cursed lycanthropes' and more as blessed folk, able to touch some ancient heritage or future potential (and, most likely, not able to reliably infect others, so as to prevent all Tengu from gaining this 'blessing').

A variant 'curse of lycanthropy' that is more likely to kill someone (progressing as a disease) than transform them might be less 'all-or-nothing' than the current set-up.

The werebat was stated up in Carrion Crown (AP#45).

Also Jackelwere is not a lyconthrope, it is a jackel that can take human form and hybrid form. They were never human(or humaniod) to begin with.

A weretiger can't be a lycanthrope as well, as Lycan means wolf and not tiger... :p

A Weretiger is a lyconthrope by D@D/pathfinder terms. A Lyconthrope was a humaniod to begin with wether cursed or not, that's what the template is added to. A Jackelwere/Wolfwere is the oppisite, it's true form is that of the animal. Plus there is no template for them and the wolf and jackel versions were the only existing ones I have seen for D@D.

Bleh, more semantics. Lycanthrope is the term paizo has elected to use to describe their therianthropes, so for the sake of simplicity I use the official term.

(And Dragon, that's pretty much the reason I added the specific "if you count it as one" line about the Jackalwere :P)

Okay you attack me while I was trying to help you against Dragon... the good guys always end up being the victim...

And I was only kiddn btw, try to find out what :P stands for.

Anyway I think Pathfinder needs a Anubite-like creature that doesn't have links with Anubis... I don't really like Jackalwere's so something that doesn't take human form would be sweet, dressed in egyptian-styled clothing and voila.

A more erudite noble and very lawful Egyptian-esque race of gnolls, more like the Anpur of Hamnuaptra or the Sibbecai of Arcana Unearthed, could be cool. Normal gnolls could be to them as degenerate serpentfolk are to civilized serpentfolk. Lower the strength bonus, eliminate the intelligence penalty, dump the racial HD, and they'd make a fine PC race, with the bulk of the changes being flavor.

Huh? I just use :P when I'm being silly. What do you use it for? (edit: Just Googled it, according to wikipedia it's used for disgust or silliness. I didn't know about the first meaning, so apologies if it seemed like that's what I was going for)

Anyways, what about the Graven Guardian from B3 as a kind-of anubite-like creature?

Um, isn't lycanthrope a template? As in you can already take any animal any use it with the template?

There is only one lycantrophe template. There are no separate templates for specific animals, just one that you can use with any animal. There's not even guidelines for creating specific types of lycantrophe, just example stats... so I really have no idea why you think you can't use any base animal you want. If it's just that you're bad at applying templates that's one thing, but it's already set up to do what you want.

If you wanted to I could whip up some weresharks, wereleopards, etc. fr you. Just ell me what you what race, class, etc. you want the base creature to be (or give me some stats, and I'll apply the template to those).

No thanks. As I've said, I want certain things in bestiaries because yes, I could make them myself, but no, I don't want to.

I'll fully stat up monsters or NPCs if they're major villains, or important to the plot, but if I just want something neat to show up I don't want to have to apply entire template or make something myself, I have better things to do. I'd rather take an already-made monster from a bestiary and be done with it.

You probably run things a different way. You're probably better than me at applying templates or building enemies from scratch, fine, that's great, good for you. But please stop shooting down all my suggestions because they're not what you would do. The point of this topic is to say what we want to see in a future bestiary, not to say no to what other people want to see.

There's been a disturbing amount of that in this thread.
