Felling Smash + Cleave: do these work in conjunction?

Rules Questions

Quote:

Felling Smash (Combat)

You commit all your focus to a devastating blow, trying to crush your opponent to the ground.
Prerequisites: Int 13, Str 13, Combat Expertise, Improved Trip, Power Attack, base attack bonus +6.
Benefit: If you use the attack action to make a single melee attack at your highest base attack bonus while using Power Attack and you hit an opponent, you can spend a swift action to attempt a trip combat maneuver against that opponent.
Quote:

Cleave (Combat)

You can strike two adjacent foes with a single swing.
Prerequisites: Str 13, Power Attack, base attack bonus +1.
Benefit: As a standard action, you can make a single attack at your full base attack bonus against a foe within reach. If you hit, you deal damage normally and can make an additional attack (using your full base attack bonus) against a foe that is adjacent to the first and also within reach. You can only make one additional attack per round with this feat. When you use this feat, you take a –2 penalty to your Armor Class until your next turn.

Can I use felling smash to trip someone if I intend to, also, use cleave to make a second attack?

Nope, Cleave is its own seperate action just like Vital Stike. So, unless you have two standard actions: no combining.

Silver Crusade

Whatever the case, tripping someone this way needs a swift action, which you have only once per round. So it just can't work.

Replying, then, from a "whatever the case" standpoint, you still have your one swift action, which means that you could still make your one swift action trip.

Whatever the case, trip-chaining with cleave or great cleave is entirely impossible, yes.

And as Starbuck said, YOU CAN`T USE THEM TOGETHER PERIOD, even just trying to make 1 Trip between the multiple Cleave attacks.
Cleave is effecitively IT`S OWN ACTION. ¨ As a standard action, you can...¨
Felling Smash specifically says ¨ If you use the attack action...¨
For the exact same reason that you can`t use Felling Smash with Cleave, Cleave can`t benefit from Vital Strike bonus damage, which only applies when you MAKE THE ATTACK ACTION. When the rules use different wording, it`s usually for a reason.

Actually most DM allow vital strike + felling smash and it's pretty neat. In this case felling smash procs on the first hit since it states "single melee attack" and cleave makes a "single melee attack + a condition based second attack"(if you could proc felling smash on both it'd be too op with great cleave).
Edit: Welcome to 2018.

NECRO'D!

I can't speak for most GMs, but the rules disallow it. Cleave is its own special action, and felling smash only works with the attack action, as listed in the Combat chapter.

However, you can combine felling smash with vital strike--a rare opportunity to double up on abilities that work via the standard attack action! I definitely have to remember that one.
