MW Surgeon's tools

Rules Questions

Does anyone think it's possible/feasible/advisable/legal to have MW surgeon's tools to give someone making a Heal check an additional +2?

Well, you could argue that, but for me that wouldn't be a very good argument since heal checks are described more as binding wounds and setting broken bones. Surgery is a very delicate process that requires a clean environment and multiple sets of hands to deal with all the messy internal organs sloshing around while you work.

I wouldn't balk at the idea of masterwork surgical instruments, I'd balk at the idea of performing surgery in the middle of combat.

If you want to have surgeons performing healing in hospitals or in M*A*S*H units where combatants are carried after being wounded in battle, then sure, masterwork surgical instruments would come into play. But I don't think that's what you are getting at.

The MW tool for Heal checks is the Healer's Kit described in the core rulebook.

It should not be a problem assuming: 1) The heal check is surgically related and 2) The bonus type does ont conflict with other bonuses' the character is getting.

As previously posted in the thread, you may want to have those 'surgical tools' be part of a regular MW Healing kit for simplicities' sake.

The Exchange

Actually, I assume the OP is talking about the surgeon's tools from the Adventurer's Armory, which raise the healer's kit bonus to +3 when they're used together. The question being, can the surgeon's tools be masterwork as well to add a total bonus of +5 Heal?

The answer, I'd guess, may be to do with the bonus type - a circumstance bonus of +2 for the healer's kit which is boosted to +3 if surgeon's tools are used as well - i.e. it's still the same circumstance, the extra surgeon's tools just improve it. To me that implies that the character is getting their total +3 circumstance bonus for using the correct masterwork tools, and tools can't be 'double masterwork', so no, there shouldn't be any additional bonus from making the surgeon's tools masterwork as well (since they themselves already make a healer's kit 'masterwork +').

On the other hand, allowing the extra +2 is hardly game-breaking.
