Looking for a new "package"

Thought that might get your attention.

Our home internet connection went out recently and we are looking at potential options to upgrade and/or change our situation with our internet connection and/or phone(s).

Basically, we're looking for the best package out there.

Right now, we don't have cable TV and don't really care to have it at this point. Most shows we want are already being streamed on the internet legally and those that aren't we can generally rent/borrower from the netflicks/library.

We don't have cell phones, but feel that we should try and have two. (Actually I have one, but work has been paying for it and they are cutting me off.) We don't talk on the phone a lot. (Also a consideration is that we seem to be in a "black hole" even though we are in the middle of town. We usually have 1 or 2 "bars". That guy who is always saying "Can you hear me now?" never came to my house.)

We've been using a DSL modem for internet and have a land line.

We really need the internet (and soon -- the withdrawal symptoms are getting bad). We need at least one cell phone and possibly two. We are kind of indifferent on a land line for a phone line, but it might be nice since cell phones aren't always the most reliable at our house. And we don't really care about cable TV.

So, what do you think is the best "package" out there? What do you use? Is it worth it?

I work for the cable company. I spend less than $40 a month. I am not the best person to answer.

We have TELSTRA Wireless Broadband at fifty a month. It averages two bars and you need to constantly unplug on one bar and restart...which is slower and more useless than the most useless Dialup over a phone line internet. Worse Still the Aerial seems to be running at six bars and constantly crashes due to overheating.

We are one mile from a Hospital, university, Shopping complex, primary school, highschool...its one of those ideal spots where you get s#@@ty internet and cell reception.

in the end i think my neighbours are freeloading off my service.

You are in Darwin - one of the most isolated cities in Australia..... Service is not going to be the best.

I also do not use a lot of (voice) phone time, and have been very happy with pay-as-I-go Tracfone. Unlike a lot of other pay-as-you-go plans from AT&T, Virgin, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc., Tracfone does not charge you extra hidden fees (like "You used your phone today. That has an extra $1 charge." I'm not kidding.); you only pay for the minutes you use and texts you send. Basic phones run around $20, and the $40-$50 phones usually come with free Double Minutes (you pay for 120 minutes and you get 120 minutes free). Most unused minutes expire after 90 days, but if you re-up before then, they all roll-over. Cons: The available phones are very basic, with minimal Internet features. Also, Tracfone piggybacks on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks (varies by region), so your service will be only as good as the one used in your area.

Depending on your circumstances, there are free "lifeline" cell services. Here in FL, it's Assurance Wireless (run by Virgin Mobile) and SafeLink (run by Tracfone). If you meet certain income or retirement or disability requirements, you qualify for a basic free cellphone and 100-200+ free minutes per month of usage. If you go over your monthly free minutes, then you are billed for the extra used. My sister has a SafeLink phone and seems happy, but I've never used it.

In our area, we have limited options: Comcast (cable modem), CenturyLink (DSL), and cellular internet through the national carriers. Of these, CenturyLink has been the most reliable and affordable, albeit the slowest. I have nothing else to say about Comcast that would not get me slapped with a libel/slander lawsuit; maybe the problems are entirely with the local Comcast branch, but it makes me wary.

Whatever you choose, ask around and see what works/what doesn't in your area. Some municipalities even run their own local ISPs.

Good luck!

P.S. I have seen advertisements for WildBlue and HughesNet satellite Internet, but haven't heard anything good or bad about them.

Actually Wireless used to be aewsome in Darwin...then some fool began building Apartment blocks in the Burbs. There is a three story bugger between me and better TV (only SBS is spotless) and Wireless reception.

I'm glad you asked Moff.
