Hey, FAWTLies. How goes?
I've been drowning in work lately and have had no time for catching up here.
But we did have our first PFRPG game Saturday, and it was *amazing!* My character kicks butt. Okay, I wanted her to be a damage machine, especially against evil beings, but even our DM was taken aback by the sheer carnage she unleashed on the big daemon we fought. :) After playing moody, complicated, magicky types, it's fun to let loose with a character who mostly just whomps on things with a big pointy stick.
Yep. Gotta change things up from time to time. And it's fun being the damage dealing machine. Glad you're enjoying it. :)

Hi all. Things not going so well.
We got some estimates, and we just don't think we can afford it. I think we are calling off the move.
Ach, I'm so sorry to hear that. Seems like nothing is going right for a lot of people lately. Maybe things will turn around soon for everyone.

Welcome back.
Isn't it though?? Love whomping things from time to time.

Isn't it? I love playing a crude barbarian or nasty-tempered fighter every now and again, especially in shorter campaigns. Long term, I prefer good RP chars, but it's nice to slice'n'dice on occasion.

The operation seems a success: thanks of the inquiries. They took a bunch of what looks like crab meat out of the area behind the disk that was poking into my nerves. The radiating pain is all gone now, and I just have intense back pain in the area of the surgery. Will keep you guys updated.
So, I take it I missed nothing in particular today? Goodnight, GBB. I hope to have a good burger for lunch tomorrow.

In addition to what Jess already said, there's usually a big to-do around harvest and slaughter-times.
Those times being early autumn and...spring? (Don't know a whole lot about farming, myself.)
Also, it may be relevant that my homebrew is a water-world, so there's a lot more fishing than farming.
A good place to start is the Jewish Calendar. Each holiday, corresponds to an event.
What's the Jewish calendar like? More or less arbitrary than the Roman?
One thing holidays across cultures seem to be attached to is heavenly events. Especially equinoxes and solstices. Most other holidays seem to be very culture specific.
I gots me to do some wiki research, then.
Are you looking for religious or seasonal based holidays? Because here we have religious holidays for several religions. If you're interested in more information post a reply.
Mostly seasonal, I suppose.

I would say it is somewhat more and yet at the same time less Arbitrary.
This is all generic information
The Jewish calendar is a lunisolar calendar, or fixed lunar year, based on twelve lunar months of twenty-nine or thirty days, with an intercalary lunar month added seven times every nineteen years (once every two to three years) to synchronize the twelve lunar cycles with the slightly longer solar year. Each Jewish lunar month starts with the new moon. The year 5771 started on 9 September 2010 and ends on 28 September 2011. This is a leap year.
Concurrently there is a weekly cycle of seven days. The Jewish day always runs from sunset to the next sunset; the formal adjustments used to specify a standard time and time zones are not relevant to the Jewish calendar.
The twelve regular months are: Nisan (30 days), Iyar (29 days), Sivan (30 days), Tammuz (29 days), Av (30 days), Elul (29 days), Tishrei (30 days), Marcheshvan (29 or 30 days), Kislev (29 or 30 days), Tevet (29 days), Shevat (30 days), and Adar (29 days). In the leap years (such as 5771) an additional month, Adar I (30 days) is added after Shevat, and the regular Adar is referred to as "Adar II".
The days are numbered 1, 2 and so on for 6 days and then the seventh is the day of rest.
Holidays, Well New Year; Passover (based on an event) 15th of the first month; A sheep butchering feast on the 14th of the second month; a holiday counting the mid range between passover and Shavot (when the 10 commandments were given out); A fast day in the 3rd month which is once again is about an event in the ancient past; A fasting day once again in the tradition of celebrating the worst events imaginable; followed a love Holiday that is all about the grape harvest, both of which are in the 5th month; Nothing in the 6th month but then several holidays in the 7th.
Whats funny is the holiday most of us know of Hanukkah is a relatively minor holiday.
I do not know how well it will work for you in a water world but some of the ideas can be easily adapted. A fish harvest festival. The commemoration of a battle or major religious event.

We don't really have and seasonal holidays as such unless you count Ney Year's day which isn't really fitting a season. The closest are Easter and Christmas which are religious that happen to fall near seasonal turnings.

Hmmm off topic has got very serious and un-fun, don't get me wrong I don't mind the occasional debate but just lately its been one festering pile of troll vomit after another....
I have been trying to think of ways to combat it.... I noticed some good conversations in the books and movies and music threads.
This leaves me wondering if the off topic conversations doesn't have common ground like the love of movies and books and stuff is this the cause of the off topic threads gravitating towards flammable topics...
