I think you hit upon my biggest frustration with these gladiator style games where primary mages are put up against non-casting types. Only the mage has the inherent capabilities to float 70 feet above their opponent, invisibly dropping round after round of mooks upon their opponent. But here's the kicker… only mages have the tools to dependably deal with this type of tactic. No one else can Permanency a See Invisible on themself to make it feasible to actually spot their opponent to begin to mount a counter.

Don't get me wrong, I love my arcane casters as much as the next player, but if you want to build a 1 vs. 1 arena style combat with any semblance of fairness, you pretty much have to split out the primary casters from the rest of the group, don't ya?

I realize this is not my rodeo, Scipion, so sorry if I'm bashing your venue here. Just had to get it out of my system.

That's kinda' why I asked the question - and it seems like we're okay to have non-casters who've ponied up the gp to have such spells cast on them: after all, the cost of having a random faceless NPC cast spells for you is in the Equipment section, right? :)

The biggest real issue I see is the whole 'save or suck' mechanic - all those spells which end the fight with one failed save. It's tactically sensible to cast such spells (again and again if required) if you have them, but not exactly entertaining for the 'crowd'. Still, I guess the only way to know that for certain is to let some of these things play out.

I have a feeling that characters of a general build will outplay characters specifically tailored for one trick. Rorsk is a good example of a character designed to cover many different situations. I think you did a good job building him (still need to update the gear).

I would agree, except under the description of Permanency, it specifically says See Invisible is on the list of spells a caster can only make permanent on himself.

So, no, Core-only, only a few specific classes can have that Permanented on themselves.

As for my gear, I thought I made the amulet strictly a +1 item with no other enhancements, but I'll double-check now.

Yup you did, but a that only costs 5,000gp. :)

You can afford two doses of dust of appearance!

Is it just Rorsk and Lethe so far? I might see what I can throw into the mix...

Do it! Do it! We need gladiators!

I was just looking at potions and had a weird image. How would a potion of Obscuring Mist work? You drink the potion and then emit a "fog" that fills a 20' radius around you? Come to that, how would a potion of Stinking Cloud work?

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Actually you can only make a potion of a spell that has a target. Obscuring mist and the like are area spells.

Here's the start for markofbane. I need to double check the numbers (there are a lot of them!) and write up his tactics.

Now that the Advanced Player's Guide is available and I have browsed through it I will allow any class or alternate features from the book. A lot of goodies in there!

Such as the awesome drunken monk master abilities.

I don't have the APG yet, so I'm not familiar with the drunken monk in there. Did looking through Koldas's equipment prompt that? :)

Basically you lose Still Mind and Purity of Body, in exchange for

Drunken Ki (Su):
At 3rd level, a drunken master can drink a tankard of ale or strong alcohol and gain one temporary ki point. The act of drinking is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. The monk can have a maximum number of drunken ki points equal to 1 plus one additional point for every two levels thereafter (5th, 7th, and so on). The monk can gain this temporary ki even before he gains a ki pool at 4th level. These drunken ki points last for 1 hour or until spent, whichever is shorter. As long as he has at least 1 drunken ki point, the monk can spend 1 ki point as a move action to move 5 feet without provoking attacks of opportunity.

Drunken Strength (Su):
At 5th level, a drunken master can spend 1 point of ki as a swift action to inf lict 1d6 extra points of damage on a single successful melee attack. The monk can choose to apply the damage after the attack roll is made. At 10th level, the monk may spend 2 drunken ki points to increase the extra damage to 2d6.

Wow, these are awesome! I can't wait to get a copy of APG. Unfortunately with all the moving expenses we've incurred, it will likely be a couple more weeks...

Just a quick check to see if there is anything about Lethe that needs changed or tweaked.

Looks good, if you could perhaps clarify your attacks a little that would help me though.

SdF's Sunday Colossuem
Version 1: Rules

Character Rules
-level 10
-20pt buy
-core races
-core classes
-two traits (no heirloom weapon, or rich parents)
-No Leadership feat, though animal companions and mounts are fine
-max HP at first level, average HP rounded up
-Backstories are not needed, but feel free to write one
-A description and personality will be needed
-A description of combat tactics, maneuvers, spell and item use will be needed.
-A more thorough description will provide a more accurately run character
-Please post the alias for the character in this thread for now
-For your alias, please have no more than 3 spoiler tags so it's easy to read through

Item Rules
-standard Wealth-by-Level (62,000g)
-Item Creation feats let you get 2 items of that type at half cost.
-No customer magic items, core book only
-Spending money on material components is fine
-This is a fight between two Player Characters, no purchasing hirelings, minions, undead servants or planar bindings (unless these actions are done in the arena somehow ie. summoning)
-Animal Companions and mounts are an exception to the previous rule as these are class features

Spell Rules
-No pre-cast spells with a duration under 8 hours

Arena Rules
-Double elimination tournament
-Taking place in a 90ft wide metal walled, dirt floor arena
-Each fight will occur in one of the following random arenas
~~empty with four 5ft wide 20ft tall pillars (2 stone, 2 wooden), well lit
~~forest like conditions with randomly placed trees, dim lighting
~~full dark city conditions with 5 small buildings (each with one door)
~~a 50ft deep lake in the center surrounded by a flat shore surrounded by difficult rocky terrain
-Combatants will enter the arena at the same time
-Initiative will be rolled and actions will be taken in that order. Initiatives may need to be re-rolled depending on conditions.

I'll create a thread on the PBP boards for the Colosseum if we get interest. Each fight will be made of separate posts for each round by myself describing character actions very similar to how I run my PBP games. All rolls will be made in the post and a map for the round will be provided.

Once again this is not a PBP where you fight another character, but rather where you submit a character to be auto-piloted to the best of my ability following your stats and guidelines.
I don't know how many matches I'll be able to do. The contestants will consist of whoever posts legal entries before next Sunday. If there's one post he wins! If there's two then they get to fight each other. If there's 15... we will see...
I think that covers about everything...

Figured I needed to test out a zen archer build.

The stage is set!
Tomorrows combatants will be;

Rorsk, the druid, and his tiger companion, Kitty
Lethe, the barbarian
Koldas Stonerock, the monk
Ergar "Stinkeye" Dambreaker, the zen archer

For now it appears no caster is brave enough to step into the arena. I hope everyone enjoys the show!

Round 1 will be;
Lethe, barbarian vs. Rorsk, druid

Round 2 will be;
Koldas, monk vs. Ergar, zen archer

Round 3 will be;
Rorsk, druid vs. Ergar, zen archer

Round 4 will be;
Lethe, barbarian vs. Koldas, monk

I updated Koldas with a few tactics, though I have never played a monk before, so you may be better suited to run him anyway!

I've started the Colosseum thread and an Audience thread to comment on it.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Well I don't know if anyone else enjoyed that but it helped me pass my really slow day!

Feel free to provide more characters to through into the fray.

I was gonna suggest that potentially you do' a "Masters of the Melée" day... Where no caster (of any form) are allowed; thi would be a more traditional gladiator style event. Pushing players to create more iconic gladiator fighters... Barbarians, monks, fighters, rogues, and rangers... It might be fun.

And i really enjoyed reading along

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Well no one made a caster anyways. I would have liked to have had one to play with... Though it did seem like everyone had prepared to fight an enemy who could go invisible. Which is kind of funny considering the bewildering array of abilities a caster could choose form.

I was kinda sad there was nothing creative for me to do with your druid spells in the forest.

I made a halfling summoner and her small serpent eidolon who together got 10 attacks with their bows and could fly. Perhaps I should have entered her...

Yah, i tend to favor more down and dirty fighters.. savage,in your face types over creative flashy types.

Lethe upgraded with some things from the APG
